NASB — Psalms 78 — KJV

God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness.

A Maskil of Asaph.

  1 aListen°, O my people°, to my Iinstruction°;
  bIncline° your ears° to the words° of my mouth°.
  2 I will aopen° my mouth° in a parable°;
  I will utter° bdark° sayings° of old°,
  3 Which° we have heard° and known°,
  And aour fathers° have told° us.
  4 We will anot conceal° them from their children°,
  But btell° to the generation° to come° the praises° of the LORD°,
  And His strength° and His cwondrous° works° that He has done°.

The story of God's wrath against the incredulous and disobedient.

9 The childrenº of Ephraim,º [being] armed,ºª [and] carryingºª bows,º turned backºª in the dayº of battle.º 10 They keptºª not² the covenantº of God,º and refusedºª to walk¹ª² in his law;º 11 And forgatºª his works,º and his wondersºª that² he had shewedºª them. 12 Marvellous thingsº didºª he in the sightº of their fathers,º in the landº of Egypt,º [in] the fieldº of Zoan.º 13 He dividedºª the sea,º and caused them to pass through;ºª and he made the watersº to standºª as² an heap.º 14 In the daytimeº also he ledºª them with a cloud,º and all² the nightº with a lightº of fire.º 15 He claveºª the rocksº in the wilderness,º and gave [them] drinkºª as [out of] the greatº depths.º 16 He brought¹ª streams¹ª also out²² of the rock,º² and caused watersº to run downºª like rivers.º 17 And they sinnedºª yet² moreºª against him by provokingºª the most Highº in the wilderness.º 18 And they temptedºª Godº in their heartº by askingºª meatº for their lust.º 19 Yea, they spakeºª against God;º they said,ºª Canºª Godº furnishºª a tableº in the wilderness?º 20 Behold,² he smoteºª the rock,º that the watersº gushed out,ºª and the streamsº overflowed;ºª canºª he giveºª breadº also?² can¹ª he provideºª fleshº for his people?º 21 Therefore² the LORDº heardºª [this], and was wroth:ºª so a fireº was kindledºª against Jacob,º and angerº also² came upºª against Israel;º 22 Because² they believedºª not² in God,º and trustedºª not² in his salvation:º 23 Though he had commandedºª the cloudsº from above,º² and openedºª the doorsº of heaven,º 24 And had rained downºª mannaº upon² them to eat,ºª and had givenºª them of the cornº of heaven.º 25 Manº did eatºª angels'º food:º he sentºª them meatº to the full.º 26 He caused an east windº to blowºª in the heaven:º and by his powerº he brought² in¹ª the south wind.º 27 He rainedºª fleshº also upon² them as dust,º and featheredº fowlsº like as the sandº of the sea:º 28 And he let [it] fallºª in the midstº of their camp,º round aboutº their habitations.º 29 So they did eat,ºª and were wellº filled:ºª for he gaveºª them their own desire;º 30 They were not² estrangedºª from their lust.º² But while their meatº [was] yet² in their mouths,º 31 The wrathº of Godº cameºª upon them, and slewºª the fattestº of them, and smote downºª the chosenº [men] of Israel.º 32 For all² this² they sinnedºª still,² and believedºª not² for his wondrous works.ºª 33 Therefore their daysº did he consumeºª in vanity,º and their yearsº in trouble.º 34 When² he slewºª them, then they soughtºª him: and they returnedºª and enquired earlyºª after God.º 35 And they rememberedºª that² Godº [was] their rock,º and the highº Godº their redeemer.ºª 36 Nevertheless they did flatterºª him with their mouth,º and they liedºª unto him with their tongues.º 37 For their heartº was not rightºª² with² him, neither² were they stedfastºª in his covenant.º 38 But he,² [being] full of compassion,º forgaveºª [their] iniquity,º and destroyedºª [them] not:² yea, many² a time¹ª turned¹ª he his anger¹ away,ºª² and did not² stir upºª all² his wrath.º 39 For he rememberedºª that² they² [were but] flesh;º a windº that passeth away,ºª and cometh not again.ºª² 40 How¹ oft² did they provokeºª him in the wilderness,º [and] grieveºª him in the desert!º 41 Yea, they turned backºª and temptedºª God,º and limitedºª the Holy Oneº of Israel.º 42 They rememberedºª not²² his hand,º [nor] the dayº when² he deliveredºª them from² the enemy.º 43 How² he had wroughtºª his signsº in Egypt,º and his wondersº in the fieldº of Zoan:º 44 And had turnedºª their riversº into blood;º and their floods,ºª that they could not² drink.ºª 45 He sentºª divers sorts of fliesº among them, which devouredºª them; and frogs,º which destroyedºª them. 46 He gaveºª also their increaseº unto the caterpiller,º and their labourº unto the locust.º 47 He destroyedºª their vinesº with hail,º and their sycomore treesº with frost.º 48 He gave upºª their cattleº also to the hail,º and their flocksº to hot thunderbolts.º 49 He castºª upon them the fiercenessº of his anger,º wrath,º and indignation,º and trouble,º by sendingº evilº angelsº [among them]. 50 He madeºª a wayº to his anger;º he sparedºª not² their soulº from death,º² but gaveºª their lifeº over¹ª to the pestilence;º 51 And smoteºª all² the firstbornº in Egypt;º the chiefº of [their] strengthº in the tabernaclesº of Ham:º 52 But made his own peopleº to go forthºª like sheep,º and guidedºª them in the wildernessº like a flock.º 53 And he ledºª them on safely,º so that they fearedºª not:² but the seaº overwhelmedºª their enemies.ºª 54 And he broughtºª them to² the borderº of his sanctuary,º [even to] this² mountain,º [which] his right handº had purchased.ºª 55 He cast outºª the heathenº also beforeº² them, and dividedºª them an inheritanceº by line,º and made the tribesº of Israelº to dwellºª in their tents.º 56 Yet they temptedºª and provokedºª² the most highº God,º and keptºª not² his testimonies:º 57 But turned back,ºª and dealt unfaithfullyºª like their fathers:º they were turned asideºª like a deceitfulº bow.º 58 For they provoked him to angerºª with their high places,º and moved him to jealousyºª with their graven images.º 59 When Godº heardºª [this], he was wroth,ºª and greatlyº abhorredºª Israel:º 60 So that he forsookºª the tabernacleº of Shiloh,º the tentº [which] he placedºª among men;º 61 And deliveredºª his strengthº into captivity,º and his gloryº into the enemy'sº hand.º 62 He gaveºª his peopleº overºª also unto the sword;º and was wrothºª with his inheritance.º 63 The fireº consumedºª their young men;º and their maidensº were not² given to marriage.ºª 64 Their priestsº fellºª by the sword;º and their widowsº made no² lamentation.ºª 65 Then the Lordº awakedºª as one out of sleep,º [and] like a mighty manº that shoutethºª by reason of wine.º² 66 And he smoteºª his enemiesº in the hinder parts:º he putºª them to a perpetualº reproach.º

The Israelites being rejected, God chose Judah, Zion, and David.

67 Moreover he refusedºª the tabernacleº of Joseph,º and choseºª not² the tribeº of Ephraim:º 68 But choseºª² the tribeº of Judah,º² the mountº Zionº which² he loved.ºª 69 And he builtºª his sanctuaryº like² highºª [palaces], like the earthº which he hath establishedºª for ever.º 70 He choseºª Davidº also his servant,º and tookºª him from the sheepfolds:ºº² 71 From followingº² the ewes great with youngºª he broughtºª him to feedºª Jacobº his people,º and Israelº his inheritance.º 72 So he fedºª them according to the integrityº of his heart;º and guidedºª them by the skilfulnessº of his hands.º
