Moses dissuadeth them from the opinion of their own righteousness, by rehearsing their several rebellions.

1 ¶ Hear,ºª O Israel:º Thou² [art] to pass overºª² Jordanº this day,º to go inºª to possessºª nationsº greaterº and mightierº than² thyself, citiesº greatº and fenced upºª to heaven,º 2 A peopleº greatº and tall,ºª the childrenº of the Anakims,º whom² thou² knowest,ºª and [of whom] thou² hast heardºª [say], Who² can standºª beforeº the childrenº of Anak!º 3 Understandºª therefore this day,º that² the LORDº thy Godº [is] he² which goeth overºª beforeº thee; [as] a consumingºª fireº he² shall destroyºª them, and he² shall bring them downºª before thy face:º so shalt thou drive them out,ºª and destroyºª them quickly,º as² the LORDº hath saidºª unto thee. 4 Speakºª not² thou in thine heart,º after that the LORDº thy Godº hath cast them outºª² from beforeº² thee, saying,ºª For my righteousnessº the LORDº hath brought me inºª to possessºª² this² land:º but for the wickednessº of these² nationsº the LORDº doth drive them outºª from beforeº² thee. 5 Not² for thy righteousness,º or for the uprightnessº of thine heart,º dost thou² goºª to possessºª² their land:º but² for the wickednessº of these² nationsº the LORDº thy Godº doth drive them outºª from beforeº² thee, and that² he may performºª² the wordº which² the LORDº swareºª unto thy fathers,º Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob.º 6 Understandºª therefore, that² the LORDº thy Godº givethºª thee not²² this² goodº landº to possessºª it for thy righteousness;º for² thou² [art] a stiffneckedºº people.º

7 ¶ Remember,ºª [and] forgetºª not,²² how² thou provokedst²² the LORDº thy Godº to wrath¹ª in the wilderness:º fromº the dayº that² thou didst depart² out¹ª of the landº² of Egypt,º until² ye cameºª unto² this² place,º ye have been² rebelliousºª againstº the LORD.º 8 Also in Horebº ye provokedºª² the LORDº to wrath,¹ª so that the LORDº was angryºª with you to have destroyedºª you. 9 When I was gone upºª into the mountº to receiveºª the tablesº of stone,º [even] the tablesº of the covenantº which² the LORDº madeºª with² you, then I abodeºª in the mountº fortyº daysº and fortyº nights,º I neither² did eatºª breadº nor² drinkºª water:º 10 And the LORDº deliveredºª unto² me² twoº tablesº of stoneº writtenºª with the fingerº of God;º and on² them [was written] according to all² the words,º which² the LORDº spakeºª with² you in the mountº out of the midstº² of the fireº in the dayº of the assembly.º 11 And it came to pass² at the endº² of fortyº daysº and fortyº nights,º [that] the LORDº gaveºª² me² the twoº tablesº of stone,º [even] the tablesº of the covenant.º 12 And the LORDº saidºª unto² me, Arise,ºª get thee downºª quicklyº from hence;²² for² thy peopleº which² thou hast brought forthºª out of Egyptº² have corruptedºª [themselves]; they are quicklyº turned asideºª out of² the wayº which² I commandedºª them; they have madeºª them a molten image.º 13 Furthermore the LORDº spakeºª unto² me, saying,ºª I have seenºª² this² people,º and, behold,² it² [is] a stiffneckedºº people:º 14 Let me alone,ºª² that I may destroyºª them, and blot outºª² their nameº from under²² heaven:º and I will makeºª of¹ thee a nationº mightierº and greaterº than² they. 15 So I turnedºª and came downºª from² the mount,º and the mountº burnedºª with fire:º and the twoº tablesº of the covenantº [were] in² my twoº hands.º 16 And I looked,ºª and, behold,² ye had sinnedºª against the LORDº your God,º [and] had madeºª you a moltenº calf:º ye had turned asideºª quicklyº out of² the wayº which² the LORDº had commandedºª you. 17 And I tookºª the twoº tables,º and castºª them out ofº² my twoº hands,º and brakeºª them before your eyes.º 18 And I fell downºª beforeº the LORD,º as at the first,º fortyº daysº and fortyº nights:º I did neither² eatºª bread,º nor² drinkºª water,º because of² all² your sinsº which² ye sinned,ºª in doingºª wickedlyº in the sightº of the LORD,º to provoke him to anger.ºª 19 For² I was afraidºª ofº² the angerº and hot displeasure,º wherewith² the LORDº was wrothºª against² you to destroyºª you. But the LORDº hearkenedºª unto² me at that² timeº also.² 20 And the LORDº was very¹ angryºª² with Aaronº to have destroyedºª him: and I prayedºª for² Aaronº also² the same² time.º 21 And I tookºª your sin,º² the calfº which² ye had made,ºª and burntºª it with fire,º and stampedºª it, [and] groundºª [it] very small,ºª [even] until² it² was as smallºª as dust:º and I castºª² the dustº thereof into² the brookº that descended² out¹ª of² the mount.º 22 And at Taberah,º and at Massah,º and at Kibrothhattaavah,º ye provoked²² the LORDº to wrath.¹ª 23 Likewise when the LORDº sentºª you from Kadeshbarnea,º² saying,ºª Go upºª and possessºª² the landº which² I have givenºª you; then ye rebelled¹ª against²² the commandmentº of the LORDº your God,º and ye believedºª him not,² nor² hearkenedºª to his voice.º 24 Ye have been² rebelliousºª against² the LORDº from the dayº² that I knewºª you. 25 Thus I fell downºª beforeº the LORDº² fortyº daysº and fortyº nights,º as² I fell downºª [at the first]; because² the LORDº had saidºª he would destroyºª you. 26 I prayedºª therefore unto² the LORD,º and said,ºª O Lordº GOD,º destroyºª not² thy peopleº and thine inheritance,º which² thou hast redeemedºª through thy greatness,º which² thou hast brought forthºª out of Egyptº² with a mightyº hand.º 27 Rememberºª thy servants,º Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob;º lookºª not² unto² the stubbornnessº of this² people,º nor to² their wickedness,º nor to² their sin:º 28 Lest² the landº whence²²² thou broughtest us outºª say,ºª Because the LORDº was not ableºª²² to bringºª them into² the landº which² he promisedºª them, and because he hatedº² them, he hath brought them outºª to slayºª them in the wilderness.º 29 Yet they² [are] thy peopleº and thine inheritance,º which² thou broughtest outºª by thy mightyº powerº and by thy stretched outºª arm.º
