NASB — Proverbs 21 — KJV

On Life and Conduct

  1 The king’s° heart° is [like] channels° of water° in the hand° of the LORD°;
  He aturns° it wherever°°° He wishes°.
  2 aEvery° man’s° way° is right° in his own eyes°,
  But the LORD° bweighs° the hearts°.
  3 To do° arighteousness° and justice°
  Is desired° by the LORD° more° than° sacrifice°.
  4 Haughty° eyes° and a proud° heart°,
  The alamp° of the wicked°, is sin°.
  5 The plans° of the adiligent° [lead] surely° to advantage°,
  But everyone° bwho is hasty° [comes] surely° to poverty°.
  6 The aacquisition° of treasures° by a lying° tongue°
  Is a fleeting° vapor°, the Ipursuit° of bdeath°.
  7 The violence° of the wicked° will drag° them away°,
  Because° they arefuse° to act° with justice°.
  8 The way° of a guilty° man° is acrooked°,
  But as for the pure°, his conduct° is upright°.
  9 It is better° to live° in a corner° of a roof°
  Than° Iin a house° shared° with a contentious° woman°.
  10 The soul° of the wicked° desires° evil°;
  His aneighbor° finds° no° favor° in his eyes°.
  11 When the ascoffer° is punished°, the Inaive° becomes° wise°;
  But when the wise° is instructed°, he receives° knowledge°.
  12 The righteous° one° considers° the house° of the wicked°,
  Turning° the awicked° to ruin°.
  13 He who ashuts° his ear° to the cry° of the poor°
  Will also° cry° himself° and not be banswered°.
  14 A agift° in secret° subdues° anger°,
  And a bribe° in the bosom°, strong° wrath°.
  15 The exercise° of justice° is joy° for the righteous°,
  But is aterror° to the workers° of iniquity°.
  16 A man° who wanders° from the way° of understanding°
  Will arest° in the assembly° of the Idead°.
  17 He who aloves° pleasure° [will become] a poor° man°;
  He who loves° wine° and oil° will not become° rich°.
  18 The wicked° is a aransom° for the righteous°,
  And the btreacherous° is in the place° of the upright°.
  19 aIt is better° to live° in a desert° land°
  Than° with a contentious° and vexing° woman°.
  20 There is precious° atreasure° and oil° in the dwelling° of the wise°,
  But a foolish° man° bswallows° it up.
  21 He who apursues° righteousness° and loyalty°
  Finds° life°, righteousness° and honor°.
  22 A awise° man° scales° the city° of the mighty°
  And brings° down° the Istronghold° in which° they trust°.
  23 He who aguards° his mouth° and his tongue°,
  Guards° his soul° from troubles°.
  24 “Proud°,” “Haughty°,” “aScoffer°,” are his names°,
  Who acts° with binsolent° pride°.
  25 The adesire° of the sluggard° puts° him to death°,
  For his hands° refuse° to work°;
  26 All° day° long he Iis craving°,
  While the righteous° agives° and does not hold° back°.
  27 The asacrifice° of the wicked° is an abomination°,
  How° much°° more°° when° he brings° it with evil° intent°!
  28 A afalse° witness° will perish°,
  But the man° who listens° [to the truth] will speak° forever°.
  29 A wicked° man° Iadisplays° a bold° face°,
  But as for the bupright°, he makes° his way° sure°.
  30 There° is ano° wisdom° and no° understanding°
  And no° counsel° against° the LORD°.
  31 The ahorse° is prepared° for the day° of battle°,
  But bvictory° belongs to the LORD°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ The king'sº heartº [is] in the handº of the LORD,º [as] the riversº of water:º he turnethºª it whithersoever²²² he will.ºª 2 Every² wayº of a manº [is] rightº in his own eyes:º but the LORDº ponderethºª the hearts.º 3 To doºª justiceº and judgmentº [is] more acceptableºª to the LORDº than sacrifice.º² 4 An highº look,º and a proudº heart,º [and] the plowingº of the wicked,º [is] sin.º 5 The thoughtsº of the diligentº [tend] only² to plenteousness;º but of every one² [that is] hastyºª only² to want.º 6 The gettingº of treasuresº by a lyingº tongueº [is] a vanityº tossed to and fro² of¹ª them that seekºª death.º 7 The robberyº of the wickedº shall destroyºª them; because² they refuseºª to doºª judgment.º 8 The wayº of manº [is] frowardº and strange:º but [as for] the pure,º his workº [is] right.º 9 [It is] betterº to dwellºª in² a cornerº of the housetop,º than with a brawlingºª¹ womanº² in a wideº house.º 10 The soulº of the wickedº desirethºª evil:º his neighbourº findeth no² favourºª in his eyes.º 11 When the scornerºª is punished,ºª the simpleº is made wise:ºª and when the wiseº is instructed,ºª he receivethºª knowledge.º 12 The righteousº [man] wisely considerethºª the houseº of the wicked:º [but God] overthrowethºª the wickedº for [their] wickedness.º 13 Whoso stoppethºª his earsº at the cryº² of the poor,º he also² shall cryºª himself,² but shall not² be heard.ºª 14 A giftº in secretº pacifiethºª anger:º and a rewardº in the bosomº strongº wrath.º 15 [It is] joyº to the justº to doºª judgment:º but destructionº [shall be] to the workersºª of iniquity.º 16 The manº that wanderethºª out of the wayº² of understandingºª shall remainºª in the congregationº of the dead.º 17 He that lovethºª pleasureº [shall be] a poorº man:º he that lovethºª wineº and oilº shall not² be rich.ºª 18 The wickedº [shall be] a ransomº for the righteous,º and the transgressorºª for² the upright.º 19 [It is] betterº to dwellºª in the wilderness,ºº than with a contentiousºª¹ and an angryº woman.º² 20 [There is] treasureº to be desiredºª and oilº in the dwellingº of the wise;º but a foolishº manº spendeth it up.ºª 21 He that followethºª after righteousnessº and mercyº findethºª life,º righteousness,º and honour.º 22 A wiseº [man] scalethºª the cityº of the mighty,º and casteth downºª the strengthº of the confidenceº thereof. 23 Whoso keepethºª his mouthº and his tongueº keepethºª his soulº from troubles.º² 24 Proudº [and] haughtyº scornerºª [is] his name,º who dealethºª in proudº wrath.º 25 The desireº of the slothfulº killethºª him; for² his handsº refuseºª to labour.ºª 26 He covetethºª greedilyº all² the dayº long: but the righteousº givethºª and sparethºª not.² 27 The sacrificeº of the wickedº [is] abomination:º how much more,²² [when] he bringethºª it with a wicked mind?º 28 A falseº witnessº shall perish:ºª but the manº that hearethºª speakethºª constantly.º 29 A wickedº manº hardenethºª his face:º but [as for] the upright,º he² directethºªª¹ª his way.º 30 [There is] no² wisdomº nor² understandingº nor² counselº against² the LORD.º 31 The horseº [is] preparedºª against the dayº of battle:º but safetyº [is] of the LORD.º
