Wisdom’s Invitation

  1 Wisdom° has abuilt° her house°,
  She has hewn° out her seven° pillars°;
  2 She has I aprepared° her food°, she has bmixed° her wine°;
  She has also° cset° her table°;
  3 She has asent° out her maidens°, she bcalls°
  From the ctops° of the heights° of the city°:
  4 “aWhoever° is Inaive°, let him turn° in here°!”
  To him who° blacks° IIunderstanding° she says°,
  5 “Come°, aeat° of my food°
  And drink° of the wine° I have mixed°.
  6 “IForsake° [your] folly° and alive°,
  And bproceed° in the way° of understanding°.”

  7 ¶ He who acorrects° a scoffer° gets° dishonor° for himself,
  And he who reproves° a wicked° man° [gets] Iinsults° for himself.
  8 aDo not reprove° a scoffer°, or° he will hate° you,
  bReprove° a wise° man° and he will love° you.
  9 Give° [instruction] to a wise° man° and he will be still° wiser°,
  Teach° a righteous° man° and he will aincrease° [his] learning°.
  10 The afear° of the LORD° is the beginning° of wisdom°,
  And the knowledge° of the Holy° One° is understanding°.
  11 For aby me your days° will be multiplied°,
  And years° of life° will be added° to you.
  12 If° you are wise°, you are wise° afor yourself,
  And if you bscoff°, you alone° will bear° it.

  Who are making° their paths° straight°:
  16 “aWhoever° is Inaive°, let him turn° in here°,”
  And to him who° lacks° IIunderstanding° she says°,
  17 “Stolen° water° is sweet°;
  And abread° [eaten] in secret° is pleasant°.”
  18 But he does not know° that the Idead° are there°,

4 Whoso² [is] simple,º let him turn² in¹ ª hither:² [as for] him that wantethº understanding,º she saithº ª to him, 5 Come,¹ ª ² eatº ª of my bread,º and drinkº ª of the wineº [which] I have mingled.º ª 6 Forsakeº ª the foolish,º and live;º ª and goº ª in the wayº of understanding.º 7 He that reprovethº ª a scornerº ª gettethº ª to himself shame:º and he that rebukethº ª a wickedº [man getteth] himself a blot.º 8 Reproveº ª not² a scorner,º ª lest² he hateº ª thee: rebukeº ª a wise man,º and he will loveº ª thee. 9 Giveº ª [instruction] to a wiseº [man], and he will be yet² wiser:º ª teachº ª a justº [man], and he will increaseº ª in learning.º 10 The fearº of the LORDº [is] the beginningº of wisdom:º and the knowledgeº of the holyº [is] understanding.º 11 For² by me thy daysº shall be multiplied,º ª and the yearsº of thy lifeº shall be increased.º ª 12 If² thou be wise,º ª thou shalt be wiseº ª for thyself: but [if] thou scornest,º ª thou alone² shalt bearº ª [it].
