The Wiles of the Harlot

  1 My son°, akeep° my words°
  And treasure° my commandments° within° you.
  2 aKeep° my commandments° and live°,
  And my Iteaching° bas the IIapple° of your eye°.
  3 aBind° them on your fingers°;
  bWrite° them on the tablet° of your heart°.
  4 Say° to wisdom°, “You are my sister°,”
  And call° understanding° [your] intimate° friend°;
  5 That they may keep° you from an Iadulteress°°,
  From the foreigner° who IIflatters° with her words°.

  10 And behold°, a woman° [comes] to meet° him,
  aDressed° as a harlot° and cunning° of heart°.
  11 She is aboisterous° and rebellious°,
  Her bfeet° do not remain° at home°;
  12 [She is] now° in the streets°, now° ain the squares°,
  And blurks° by every° corner°.
  13 So she seizes° him and kisses° him
  IAnd with a abrazen° face° she says° to him:
  14II was due° to offer° apeace° offerings°;
  Today° I have bpaid° my vows°.
  15 “Therefore°° I have come° out to meet° you,
  To seek° your presence° earnestly°, and I have found° you.
  16 “I have spread° my couch° with acoverings°,
  With colored° blinens° of Egypt°.
  17 “I have sprinkled° my bed°
  With amyrrh°, aloes° and bcinnamon°.
  18 “Come°, let us drink° our fill° of love° until° morning°;
  Let us delight° ourselves with caresses°.
  19 “For Imy husband° is not at home°,
  He has gone° on a long°° journey°;
  20 He has taken° a abag° of money° Iwith him,
  At the full° moon° he will come° home°.”
  21 With her many° persuasions° she entices° him;
  With her Iaflattering° lips° she seduces° him.
  22 Suddenly° he follows°° her
  As an ox° goes° to the slaughter°,
  Or as I[one in] fetters° to the discipline° of a fool°,
  23 Until° an arrow° pierces° through° his liver°;
  As a abird° hastens° to the snare°,
  So he does not know° that it [will cost him] his life°.

Solomon persuadeth to a sincere and kind familiarity with wisdom.

he sheweth the cunning of a whore,

10 And, behold,² there metºª him a womanº [with] the attireº of an harlot,ºª and subtilºª of heart.º 11 (She² [is] loudºª and stubborn;ºª her feetº abideºª not² in her house:º 12 Nowº [is she] without,º nowº in the streets,º and lieth in waitºª atº every² corner.)º 13 So she caughtºª him, and kissedºª him, [and] with an impudentºª faceº saidºª unto him, 14 [I have] peace¹ offeringsº² with² me; this dayº have I payedºª my vows.º 15 Therefore²² came I forthºª to meetºª thee, diligently to seekºª thy face,º and I have foundºª thee. 16 I have deckedºª my bedº with coverings¹ of tapestry,² with carvedº [works], with fine linenº of Egypt.º 17 I have perfumedºª my bedº with myrrh,º aloes,º and cinnamon.º 18 Come,¹ª² let us take our fillºª of loveº until² the morning:º let us solace¹ª ourselves² with loves.º 19 For² the goodmanº [is] not² at home,º he is goneºª a longº² journey:º 20 He hath takenºª a bagº of moneyº with² him,¹ [and] will comeºª homeº at the dayº appointed.º 21 With her muchº fair speechº she caused him to yield,ºª with the flatteringº of her lipsº she forcedºª him.

and the desperate simplicity of a young wanton.
