During the war David still waxeth stronger.

1 ¶ Now there was² longº warº between² the houseº of Saulº and the houseº of David:º but Davidº waxed¹ª stronger¹ and stronger,º² and the houseº of Saulº waxedºª weaker¹ and weaker.º

Six sons were born to him in Hebron.

2 ¶ And unto Davidº were sonsº bornºªªª in Hebron:º and his firstbornº was² Amnon,º of Ahinoamº the Jezreelitess;º 3 And his second,º Chileab,º of Abigailº the wifeº of Nabalº the Carmelite;º and the third,º Absalomº the sonº of Maacahº the daughterº of Talmaiº kingº of Geshur;º 4 And the fourth,º Adonijahº the sonº of Haggith;º and the fifth,º Shephatiahº the sonº of Abital;º 5 And the sixth,º Ithream,º by Eglahº David'sº wife.º These² were bornºª to Davidº in Hebron.º

Abner, displeased with Ish-bosheth,

6 ¶ And it came to pass,² while there was² warº between² the houseº of Saulº and the houseº of David,º that Abnerº made himself strongºª for the houseº of Saul.º 7 And Saulº had a concubine,º whose nameº [was] Rizpah,º the daughterº of Aiah:º and [Ishbosheth] saidºª to² Abner,º Wherefore² hast thou gone² in¹ª unto² my father'sº concubine?º 8 Then was Abnerº veryº wrothºª for² the wordsº of Ishbosheth,º and said,ºª [Am] I² a dog'sº head,º which² against Judahº do shewºª kindnessº this dayº unto² the houseº of Saulº thy father,º to² his brethren,º and to² his friends,º and have not² deliveredºª thee into the handº of David,º that thou chargestºª² me to dayº with a faultº concerning this woman?º 9 So² doºª Godº to Abner,º and more² also,¹ª² except,² as² the LORDº hath swornºª to David,º even² so² I doºª to him; 10 To translateºª the kingdomº from the houseº² of Saul,º and to set upºª the² throneº of Davidº over² Israelº and over² Judah,º from Danº² even to² Beersheba.º 11 And he couldºª not² answerºª² Abnerº a wordº again,² because he fearedºª² him.

revolteth to David.

12 ¶ And Abnerº sentºª messengersº to² Davidº on his behalf,² saying,ºª Whose² [is] the land?º sayingºª [also], Makeºª thy leagueº with² me, and, behold,² my handº [shall be] with² thee, to bring aboutºª² all² Israelº unto² thee.

David requireth a condition to bring him his wife Michal.

13 ¶ And he said,ºª Well;º I² will makeºª a leagueº with² thee: but² oneº thingº I² requireºª of²² thee, that is,ºª Thou shalt not² seeºª² my face,º except²² thou firstº bringºª² Michalº Saul'sº daughter,º when thou comestºª to seeºª² my face.º 14 And Davidº sentºª messengersº to² Ishboshethº Saul'sº son,º saying,ºª Deliverºª [me]² my wifeº² Michal,º which² I espousedºª to me for an hundredº foreskinsº of the Philistines.º 15 And Ishboshethº sent,ºª and tookºª her from²² [her] husband,º [even] from²² Phaltielº the sonº of Laish.º¹ª 16 And her husbandº went¹ª² with² her along² weepingºª¹ behindº her to² Bahurim.º Then saidºª Abnerº unto² him, Go,¹ª² return.ºª And he returned.ºª

Abner, having communed with the Israelites, is feasted by David and dismissed.

17 ¶ And Abnerº had² communicationº¹ª with² the eldersº of Israel,º saying,ºª Ye soughtºª² for² Davidº in timesº² pastº² [to be] kingº over² you: 18 Now² then doºª [it]: for² the LORDº hath spokenºª of² David,º saying,ºª By the handº of my servantº Davidº I will saveºª² my peopleº Israelº out of the handº² of the Philistines,º and out of the handº² of all² their enemies.ºª 19 And Abnerº also² spakeºª in the earsº of Benjamin:º and Abnerº went¹ª² also² to speakºª in the earsº of Davidº in Hebronº² all² that² seemed¹ goodº² to Israel,º and that seemed goodº to the whole² houseº of Benjamin.º 20 So Abnerº cameºª to² Davidº to Hebron,º and twentyº men¹² with² him. And Davidº madeºª Abnerº and the men¹² that² [were] with² him a feast.º 21 And Abnerº saidºª unto² David,º I will ariseºª and go,¹ª² and will gatherºª² all² Israelº unto² my lordº the king,º that they may makeºª a leagueº with² thee, and that thou mayest reignºª over all² that² thine heartº desireth.ºª And Davidº sentºª² Abnerº away;¹ª and he went¹ª² in peace.º

Joab, returning from battle, is displeased with the king and killeth Abner.

22 ¶ And, behold,² the servantsº of Davidº and Joabº cameºª from [pursuing] a troop,º² and brought² in¹ª a greatº spoilº with² them: but Abnerº [was] not² with² Davidº in Hebron;º for² he had sent him away,ºª and he was gone¹ª² in peace.º 23 When Joabº and all² the hostº that² [was] with² him were come,ºª they toldºª Joab,º saying,ºª Abnerº the sonº of Nerº cameºª to² the king,º and he hath sent him away,ºª and he is gone¹ª² in peace.º 24 Then Joabº cameºª to² the king,º and said,ºª What² hast thou done?ºª behold,² Abnerº cameºª unto² thee; why² [is] it [that] thou hast sent him away,ºª and he is quite¹ª gone?¹ª² 25 Thou knowestºª² Abnerº the sonº of Ner,º that² he cameºª to deceiveºª thee, and to knowºª² thy going outº and thy coming in,ºª¹ and to knowºª² all² that² thou² doest.ºª 26 And when Joabº was come outºª from²² David,º he sentºª messengersº afterº Abner,º which brought him againºª² from the wellº² of Sirah:º but Davidº knewºª [it] not.² 27 And when Abnerº was returnedºª to Hebron,º Joabº took him asideºª inºº the gateº to speakºª with² him quietly,º and smoteºª him there² under the fifthº [rib], that he died,ºª for the bloodº of Asahelº his brother.º

David curseth Joab,

28 ¶ And afterwardº²² when Davidº heardºª [it], he said,ºª I² and my kingdomº [are] guiltlessº before²² the LORDº for¹ everº² from the bloodº² of Abnerº the sonº of Ner:º 29 Let it restºª on² the headº of Joab,º and on² all² his father'sº house;º and let there not² failºª from the houseº² of Joabº one that hath an issue,ºª or that is a leper,ºª or that leanethºª on a staff,º or that fallethºª on the sword,º or that lackethº bread.º 30 So Joabº and Abishaiº his brotherº slewºª Abner,º because²² he had slainºª their brotherº² Asahelº at Gibeonº in the battle.º

and mourneth for Abner.

31 ¶ And Davidº saidºª to² Joab,º and to² all² the peopleº that² [were] with² him, Rendºª your clothes,º and girdºª you with sackcloth,º and mournºª beforeº Abner.º And kingº Davidº [himself] followedº¹ª the bier.º 32 And they buriedºª² Abnerº in Hebron:º and the kingº lifted upºª² his voice,º and weptºª at² the graveº of Abner;º and all² the peopleº wept.ºª 33 And the kingº lamentedºª over² Abner,º and said,ºª Diedºª Abnerº as a foolº dieth?º 34 Thy handsº [were] not² bound,ºª nor² thy feetº putºª into fetters:º as a man² fallethºª beforeº wickedº men,º [so] fellestºª thou. And all² the peopleº weptºª againºª over² him. 35 And when allº the peopleº cameºª to cause¹ª² Davidº to eatºª meatº while it was yetº day,º Davidº sware,ºª saying,ºª So² doºª Godº to me, and more² also,¹ª² if²² I tasteºª bread,º or² ought¹ else,²² tillº the sunº be down.ºª 36 And all² the peopleº took noticeºª [of it], and it pleased¹ª¹ them:²² as whatsoever²² the kingº didºª pleasedº¹² all² the people.º 37 For all² the peopleº and all² Israelº understoodºª that² dayº that² it was² not² of the kingº² to slayºª Abnerº the sonº of Ner.º 38 And the kingº saidºª unto² his servants,º Knowºª ye not² that² there is a princeº and a great manº fallenºª this² dayº in Israel?º 39 And I² [am] this dayº weak,º though anointedºª king;º and these² men¹² the sonsº of Zeruiahº [be] too hardº for² me: the LORDº shall rewardºª the doer² of evil¹ª² according to his wickedness.º
