Distresses Foretold

1 The word° of the LORD° also came° to me saying°, 2 “You shall not take a wife° for yourself nor° have° sons° or daughters° in this° place°.” 3 For thus° says° the LORD° concerning° the sons° and daughters° born° in this° place°, and concerning° their amothers° who bear° them, and their bfathers° who beget° them in this° land°: 4 “They will adie° of deadly° diseases°, they bwill not be lamented° or buried°; they will be as cdung° on the surface° of the ground° and come° to an end° by sword° and famine°, and their carcasses° will become° food° for the dbirds° of the sky° and for the beasts° of the earth°.”

The prophet, under the types of abstaining from marriage, from houses of mourning and feasting, foresheweth the utter ruin of the Jews,

1 ¶ The wordº of the LORDº came² also unto² me, saying,ºª 2 Thou shalt not² takeºª thee a wife,º neither² shalt thou have² sonsº or daughtersº in this² place.º 3 For² thus² saithºª the LORDº concerning² the sonsº and concerning² the daughtersº that are born¹ª² in this² place,º and concerning² their mothersº that bareºª them, and concerning² their fathersº that begat¹² them in this² land;º 4 They shall dieºª of grievousº deaths;º they shall not² be lamented;ºª neither² shall they be buried;ºª [but] they shall be as dungº upon² the faceº of the earth:º and they shall be² consumedºª by the sword,º and by famine;º and their carcasesº shall be meatº for the fowlsº of heaven,º and for the beastsº of the earth.º 5 For² thus² saithºª the LORD,º Enterºª not² into the houseº of mourning,º neither² go¹ª² to lamentºª nor² bemoanºª them: for² I have taken awayºª² my peaceº from²² this² people,º saithºª the LORD,º [even]² lovingkindnessº and mercies.º 6 Both the greatº and the smallº shall dieºª in this² land:º they shall not² be buried,ºª neither² shall [men] lamentºª for them, nor² cut¹ª themselves,² nor² make themselves baldºª for them: 7 Neither² shall [men] tearºª [themselves] for them in² mourning,º to comfortºª them for² the dead;ºª neither² shall [men] give them the cupº of consolationº to drinkºª for² their fatherº or for² their mother.º 8 Thou shalt not² also goºª into the houseº of feasting,º to sitºª with² them to eatºª and to drink.ºª 9 For² thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will cause to ceaseºª out of² this² placeº in your eyes,º and in your days,º the voiceº of mirth,º and the voiceº of gladness,º the voiceº of the bridegroom,º and the voiceº of the bride.º
