Prophecy against Moab

1 Concerning aMoab°. Thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, the God° of Israel°,
  “Woe° to bNebo°, for it has been destroyed°;
  cKiriathaim° has been° put° to shame°, it has been captured°;
  The lofty° stronghold° has been° put° to shame° and Ishattered°.
  2 “There° is praise° for Moab° no° longer°;
  In aHeshbon° they have devised° calamity° against° her:
  ‘Come° and let us cut° her off° from [being] a nation°!’
  You too°, IMadmen°, will be silenced°;
  The sword° will follow°° after° you.
  3 “The sound° of an outcry° from aHoronaim°,
  ‘Devastation° and great° destruction°!’
  4 “Moab° is broken°,
  Her little° ones° have sounded° out a cry° [of distress].
  5 “For by the ascent° of aLuhith°
  They will ascend° with continual° weeping°;
  For at the descent° of Horonaim°
  They have heard° the Ianguished° cry° of destruction°.
  6aFlee°, save° your lives°,
  That you may be like a juniper° in the wilderness°.
  7 “For because° of your atrust° in your own achievements° and treasures°,
  Even° you yourself° will be captured°;
  And bChemosh° will go° off° into exile°
  Together° with his priests° and his princes°.
  8 “A destroyer° will come° to every° city°,
  So that no° city° will escape°;
  The valley° also will be ruined°
  And the aplateau° will be destroyed°,
  As the LORD° has said°.
  9 “Give° Iawings° to Moab°,
  For she will IIflee° away°;
  And her cities° will become° a bdesolation°,
  Without° inhabitants° in them.
  10aCursed° be the one who does° the LORDS° work° bnegligently°,
  And cursed° be the one who restrains° his csword° from blood°.

and for their contempt of God and his people.

26 ¶ Make ye him drunken:ºª for² he magnifiedºª [himself] against² the LORD:º Moabº also shall wallowºª in his vomit,º and he² also² shall be² in derision.º 27 For² was² not² Israelº a derisionº unto thee? was he foundºª among thieves?º for² sinceº² thou spakestº of him, thou skippedst¹ª for joy.² 28 O ye that dwellºª in Moab,º leaveºª the cities,º and dwellºª in the rock,º and be² like the doveº [that] maketh her nestºª in the sidesº of the hole'sº mouth.º 29 We have heardºª the prideº of Moab,º (he is exceedingº proud)º his loftiness,º and his arrogancy,¹² and his pride,¹² and the haughtinessº of his heart.º 30 I² knowºª his wrath,º saithºª the LORD;º but [it shall] not² [be] so;² his liesº shall not² so² effectºª [it]. 31 Therefore²² will I howlºª for² Moab,º and I will cry outºª for all² Moab;º [mine heart] shall mournºª for² the men¹² of Kirheres.º 32 O vineº of Sibmah,º I will weepºª for thee with the weepingº² of Jazer:º thy plantsº are gone overºª the sea,º they reachºª [even] to² the seaº of Jazer:º the spoilerºª is fallenºª upon² thy summer fruitsº and upon² thy vintage.º 33 And joyº and gladnessº is takenºª from the plentiful field,º² and from the landº² of Moab;º and I have caused wineº to failºª from the winepresses:º² none² shall treadºª with shouting;º [their] shoutingº [shall be] no² shouting.º 34 From the cryº² of Heshbonº [even] unto² Elealeh,º [and even] unto² Jahaz,º have they utteredºª their voice,º from Zoarº² [even] unto² Horonaim,º [as] an heiferº of three years old:º for² the watersº also² of Nimrimº shall be² desolate.º 35 Moreover I will cause to ceaseºª in Moab,º saithºª the LORD,º him that offerethºª in the high places,º and him that burneth incenseºª to his gods.º 36 Therefore²² mine heartº shall soundºª for Moabº like pipes,º and mine heartº shall soundºª like pipesº for² the men¹² of Kirheres:º because²² the richesº [that] he hath gottenºª are perished.ºª 37 For² every² headº [shall be] bald,º and every² beardº clipped:ºª upon² all² the handsº [shall be] cuttings,¹² and upon² the loinsº sackcloth.º 38 [There shall be] lamentationº generally² upon² all² the housetopsº of Moab,º and in the streetsº thereof: for² I have brokenºª² Moabº like a vesselº wherein [is] no² pleasure,º saithºª the LORD.º 39 They shall howl,ºª [saying], How² is it broken down!ºª how² hath Moabº turnedºª the backº with shame!ºª so shall Moabº be² a derisionº and a dismayingº to all² them aboutº him. 40 For² thus² saithºª the LORD;º Behold,² he shall flyºª as an eagle,º and shall spreadºª his wingsº over² Moab.º 41 Keriothº is taken,ºª and the strong holdsº are surprised,ºª and the mighty men'sº heartsº in Moabº at that² dayº shall be² as the heartº of a womanº in her pangs.ºª 42 And Moabº shall be destroyedºª from [being] a people,º² because² he hath magnifiedºª [himself] against² the LORD.º 43 Fear,º and the pit,º and the snare,º [shall be] upon² thee, O inhabitantºª of Moab,º saithºª the LORD.º 44 He that fleethº¹ªª fromº² the fearº shall fallºª into² the pit;º and he that getteth upºª out of² the pitº shall be takenºª in the snare:º for² I will bringºª upon² it, [even] upon² Moab,º the yearº of their visitation,º saithºª the LORD.º 45 They that fledºª stoodºª under the shadowº of Heshbonº because of the force:º² but² a fireº shall come forthºª out of Heshbon,º² and a flameº from the midstº² of Sihon,º and shall devourºª the cornerº of Moab,º and the crown of the headº of the tumultuousº ones.º 46 Woeº be unto thee, O Moab!º the peopleº of Chemoshº perisheth:ºª for² thy sonsº are takenºª captives,º and thy daughtersº captives.º
