God Commands That Babylon Be Taken

1 The Iaoracle° concerning the IIbwilderness° of the sea°.
  As cwindstorms° in the IIINegev° sweep° on,
  It comes° from the wilderness°, from a terrifying° land°.
  2 A aharsh° vision° has been shown° to me;
  The btreacherous° one [still] deals° treacherously°, and the destroyer° [still] destroys°.
  Go° up, cElam°, lay° siege°, Media°;
  I have made° an end° of all° Ithe groaning° she has caused.
  3 For this° reason°° my aloins° are full° of anguish°;
  Pains° have seized° me like the pains° of a bwoman in labor°.
  I am so° bewildered° I cannot° hear°, so° terrified° I cannot° see°.
  4 My Imind° reels°, IIhorror° overwhelms° me;
  The twilight° I longed° for has been aturned° for me into trembling°.
  5 They aset° the table°, they Ispread° out the cloth°, they eat°, they drink°;
  “Rise° up, captains°, oil° the shields°,”
6 For thus° the Lord° says° to me,
  “Go°, station° the lookout°, let him areport° what° he sees°.
  7 “When he sees° ariders°, horsemen° in pairs°,
  A train° of donkeys°, a train° of camels°,
  Let him pay° close° attention°, very° close° attention°.”
8 Then Ithe lookout° called°,
  “aO Lord°, I stand° continually° by day° on the watchtower°,
  And I am stationed° every° night° at my guard° post°.
  9 “Now behold°, here° comes° a troop° of riders°, horsemen° in pairs°.”
  And one said°, “aFallen°, fallen° is Babylon°;
  And all° the bimages° of her gods° Iare shattered° on the ground°.”
  10 O my athreshed° [people], and my Iafflicted° of the threshing° floor°!
  What° I have heard° from the LORD° of hosts°,
  The God° of Israel°, I make° known° to you.

The prophet, bewailing the captivity of his people, seeth in a vision the fall of Babylon by the Medes and Persians.

1 ¶ The burdenº of the desertº of the sea.º As whirlwindsº in the southº pass¹ª through;² [so] it comethºª from the desert,º² from a terribleºª land.º² 2 A grievousº visionº is declaredºª unto me; the treacherous dealerºª dealeth treacherously,ºª and the spoilerºª spoileth.ºª Go up,ºª O Elam:º besiege,ºª O Media;º all² the sighingº thereof have I made to cease.ºª 3 Therefore²² are my loinsº filledºª with pain:º pangsº have taken holdºª upon me, as the pangsº of a woman that travaileth:ºª I was bowed downºª at the hearingºª² [of it]; I was dismayedºª at the seeingºª² [of it]. 4 My heartº panted,ºª fearfulnessº affrightedºª² me: the nightº of my pleasureº hath he turnedºª into fearº unto me. 5 Prepareºª the table,º watchºª in the watchtower,º eat,ºª drink:ºª arise,ºª ye princes,º [and] anointºª the shield.º 6 For² thus² hath the Lordº saidºª unto² me, Go,¹ª² setºª a watchman,ºª let him declareºª what² he seeth.ºª 7 And he sawºª a chariotº [with] a coupleº of horsemen,º a chariotº of asses,º [and] a chariotº of camels;º and he hearkenedºª diligentlyº with muchº heed:º 8 And he cried,ºª A lion:º My lord,¹² I² standºª continuallyº upon² the watchtowerº in the daytime,º and I² am setºª in² my wardº whole² nights:º 9 And, behold,² here² comethºª a chariotº of men,º [with] a coupleº of horsemen.º And he answeredºª and said,ºª Babylonº is fallen,ºª is fallen;ºª and all² the graven imagesº of her godsº he hath brokenºª unto the ground.º 10 O my threshing,º and the cornº of my floor:º that which² I have heardºª of²² the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel,º have I declaredºª unto you.
