The destruction of Edom,

1 ¶ The visionº of Obadiah.º Thus² saithºª the Lordº GODº concerning Edom;º We have heardºª a rumourº from²² the LORD,º and an ambassadorº is sentºª among the heathen,º Ariseºª ye, and let us rise upºª against² her in battle.º 2 Behold,² I have madeºª thee smallº among the heathen:º thou² art greatlyº despised.ºª

for their pride,

3 ¶ The prideº of thine heartº hath deceivedºª thee, thou that dwellestºª in the cleftsº of the rock,º whose habitation¹ª² [is] high;º that saithºª in his heart,º Who² shall bring me downºª to the ground?º 4 Though² thou exaltºª [thyself] as the eagle,º and though² thou setºª thy nestº among² the stars,º thence²² will I bring thee down,ºª saithºª the LORD.º 5 If² thievesº cameºª to thee, if² robbersºª by night,º (how² art thou cut off!)ºª would they not² have stolenºª till they had enough?º if² the grapegatherersºª cameºª to thee, would they not² leaveºª [some] grapes?º 6 How² are [the things] of Esauº searched out!ºª [how] are his hidden¹ things² sought up!ºª 7 All² the men¹² of thy confederacyº have broughtºª thee [even] to² the border:º the men¹² that were at peaceº with thee have deceivedºª thee, [and] prevailedºª against thee; [they that eat] thy breadº have laidºª a woundº under² thee: [there is] none² understandingº in him. 8 Shall I not² in that² day,º saithºª the LORD,º even destroyºª the wiseº [men] out of Edom,º² and understandingº out of the mountº² of Esau?º 9 And thy mightyº [men], O Teman,º shall be dismayed,ºª to the end that² every oneº of the mountº² of Esauº may be cut offºª by slaughter.º²

and for their wrong unto Jacob.

10 ¶ For [thy] violenceº² against thy brotherº Jacobº shameº shall coverºª thee, and thou shalt be cut offºª for ever.º 11 In the dayº that thou stoodestºª on the other side,²² in the dayº that the strangersºª carried away captiveºª his forces,º and foreignersº entered¹ª into² his gates,º and castºª lotsº upon² Jerusalem,º even² thou² [wast] as oneº of² them. 12 But thou shouldest not² have lookedºª on the dayº of thy brotherº in the dayº that he became a stranger;¹² neither² shouldest thou have rejoicedºª over the childrenº of Judahº in the dayº of their destruction;ºª neither² shouldest thou have spoken¹ proudlyºª² in the dayº of distress.º 13 Thou shouldest not² have enteredºª into the gateº of my peopleº in the dayº of their calamity;º yea,² thou² shouldest not² have lookedºª on their afflictionº in the dayº of their calamity,º nor² have laidºª [hands] on their substanceº in the dayº of their calamity;º 14 Neither² shouldest thou have stoodºª in² the crossway,º to cut offºª² those of his that did escape;º neither² shouldest thou have delivered upºª those of his that did remainº in the dayº of distress.º 15 For² the dayº of the LORDº [is] nearº upon² all² the heathen:º as² thou hast done,ºª it shall be doneºª unto thee: thy rewardº shall returnºª upon thine own head.º 16 For² as² ye have drunkºª upon² my holyº mountain,º [so] shall all² the heathenº drinkºª continually,º yea, they shall drink,ºª and they shall swallow down,ºª and they shall be² as though they had notº been.²

The salvation and victory of Jacob.

17 ¶ But upon mountº Zionº shall be² deliverance,º and there shall be² holiness;º and the houseº of Jacobº shall possessºª² their possessions.º 18 And the houseº of Jacobº shall be² a fire,º and the houseº of Josephº a flame,º and the houseº of Esauº for stubble,º and they shall kindleºª in them, and devourºª them; and there shall not² be² [any] remainingº of the houseº of Esau;º for² the LORDº hath spokenºª [it]. 19 And [they of] the southº shall possessºª² the mountº of Esau;º and [they of] the plainº² the Philistines:º and they shall possessºª² the fieldsº of Ephraim,º and the fieldsº of Samaria:º and Benjaminº [shall possess]² Gilead.º 20 And the captivityº of this² hostº of the childrenº of Israelº [shall possess] that² of the Canaanites,º [even] unto² Zarephath;º and the captivityº of Jerusalem,º which² [is] in Sepharad,º shall possessºª² the citiesº of the south.º 21 And savioursºª shall come upºª on mountº Zionº to judgeºª the² mountº of Esau;º and the kingdomº shall be² the LORD'S.º
