Apostasy

1 But athe Spirit° explicitly° says° that bin later° times° some° will Ifall° away° from the faith°, paying° attention° to cdeceitful° spirits° and ddoctrines° of demons°, 2 by means° of the hypocrisy° of liars° aseared° in their own° conscience° as with a branding° iron°, 3 [men] who aforbid° marriage° [and advocate] babstaining° from foods° which° cGod° has created° to be dgratefully°° shared° in by those° who believe° and know° the truth°. 4 For aeverything° created° by God° is good°, and nothing° is to be rejected° if it is breceived° with gratitude°; 5 for it is sanctified° by means° of athe word° of God° and prayer°.

A Good Minister’s Discipline

6 ¶ In pointing° out these° things° to athe brethren°, you will be a good° bservant° of Christ° Jesus°, [constantly] nourished° on the words° of the faith° and of the Icsound° doctrine° which° you dhave been following°. 7 But Ihave° nothing° to do° with aworldly° bfables° fit° only° for old° women°. He foretelleth that in the latter times there shall be departure from the faith.

1 ¶ Nowº the² Spiritº speakethºª expressly,º thatº inº the latterº timesº someº shall depart² from¹ª the² faith,º giving heedºª to seducingº spirits,º andº doctrinesº of devils;º 2 Speaking liesº inº hypocrisy;º having¹ª theirº conscienceº seared with a hot iron;ºª 3 Forbiddingºª to marry,ºª [and commanding] to abstain² from¹ª meats,º whichº Godº hath createdºª to¹ be receivedº² withº thanksgivingº of them which believeº andº knowºª the² truth.º 4 Forº everyº creatureº of Godº [is] good,º andº nothingº to be refused,º if it be receivedºª withº thanksgiving:º 5 Forº it is sanctifiedºª byº the wordº of Godº andº prayer.º

And to the end that Timothy might not fail in his duty, he furnisheth him with divers precepts belonging thereto.

6 If thou put¹ª the brethren¹ in remembranceºª²² of these things,º thou shalt beºª a goodº ministerº of Jesusº Christ,º nourished upºª in the² wordsº of faithº andº of goodº doctrine,º whereuntoº thou hast attained.ºª 7 Butº refuseºª profaneº andº old wives'º fables,º andº exerciseºª thyselfº [rather] untoº godliness.º 8 Forº bodilyº exerciseº profitethººª little:º¹ butº godlinessº isºª profitableº untoº all things,º havingºª promiseº of the lifeº that now is,º andº of that which is to come.ºª 9 This [is] a faithfulº sayingº andº worthyº of allº acceptation.º 10 Forº thereforeºº we¹ª bothº labourºª andº suffer reproach,ºª becauseº we trustºª inº the livingºª God,º whoº isºª the Saviourº of allº men,º speciallyº of those that believe.º 11 These thingsº commandºª andº teach.ºª 12 Let¹ª no manº despiseºª thyº youth;º butº be² thou¹ª an exampleº of the² believers,º inº word,º inº conversation,º inº charity,º inº spirit,º inº faith,º inº purity.º 13 Tillº I come,ºª give attendanceºª to reading,º to exhortation,º to doctrine.º 14 Neglectºª notº the² giftº that is inº thee,º whichº was givenºª theeº byº prophecy,º withº the laying onº of the² handsº of the² presbytery.º 15 Meditate uponºª these things;º give thyself¹ª wholly² toº them;º thatº thyº profitingº may¹ª appearº² toº all.º 16 Take heedºª unto thyself,º andº unto the² doctrine;º continueºª in them:º forº in doingºª thisº thou shalt¹ª bothº saveºª thyself,º andº them that hearºª thee.º
