  People° weighed° down° with iniquity°,

  Sons° who bact° corruptly°!
  They have cabandoned° the LORD°,
  They have ddespised° the Holy° One° of Israel°,
  They have turned° away° IIfrom Him.

  Like a watchman’s° hut° in a cucumber° field°, like a besieged° city°.
  9 aUnless° the LORD° of hosts°

  We would be like cSodom°,
  We would be like° Gomorrah°.

God Has Had Enough

  10 ¶ Hear° athe word° of the LORD°,
  You rulers° of bSodom°;
  Give° ear° to the instruction° of our God°,
  You people° of Gomorrah°.
  11aWhat° are your multiplied° sacrifices° to Me?”
  Says° the LORD°.
  “I Ihave had° enough° of burnt° offerings° of rams°
  And the fat° of fed° cattle°;
  And I take° no° pleasure° in the blood° of bulls°, lambs° or goats°.
  12 “When° you come° ato appear° before° Me,
  Who° requires° Iof you this° trampling° of My courts°?
  13 “Bring° your worthless° offerings° no° longer°,
  aIncense° is an abomination° to Me.

  I cannot°° dendure° iniquity° and the solemn° assembly°.
  14 “I hate° your new° moon° [festivals] and your aappointed° feasts°,

  bI will hide° My eyes° from you;

  You will beat° the best° of the land°;
  20 “But if° you refuse° and rebel°,
  You will be adevoured° by the sword°.”

  21 ¶ How° the faithful° city° has become° a aharlot°,
  She [who] was full° of justice°!
  Righteousness° once lodged° in her,
  But now° murderers°.

  23 Your arulers° are rebels°
  And companions° of thieves°;

Isaiah complaineth of Judah for her rebellion.

He lamenteth her judgments.

5 ¶ Why²² should ye be strickenºª any more?² ye will revoltº more and more:ºª the whole² headº is sick,º and the whole² heartº faint.º 6 From the soleº² of the footº even unto² the headº [there is] no² soundnessº in it; [but] wounds,º and bruises,º and putrifyingº sores:º they have not² been closed,ºª neither² bound up,ºª neither² mollifiedºª with ointment.º 7 Your countryº [is] desolate,º your citiesº [are] burnedºª with fire:º your land,º strangersºª devourºª it in your presence,² and [it is] desolate,º as overthrownº by strangers.ºª 8 And the daughterº of Zionº is leftºª as a cottageº in a vineyard,º as a lodgeº in a garden of cucumbers,º as a besiegedºª city.º 9 Exceptº the LORDº of hostsº had leftºª unto us a very smallº remnant,º we should have beenºª as Sodom,º [and] we should have been likeºª unto Gomorrah.º

He upbraideth their whole service.

10 ¶ Hearºª the wordº of the LORD,º ye rulersº of Sodom;º give earºª unto the lawº of our God,º ye peopleº of Gomorrah.º 11 To whatº purpose [is] the multitudeº of your sacrificesº unto me? saithºª the LORD:º I am fullºª of the burnt offeringsº of rams,º and the fatº of fed beasts;º and I delightºª not² in the bloodº of bullocks,º or of lambs,º or of he goats.º 12 When² ye comeºª to appearºª beforeº me, who² hath requiredºª this² at your hand,º² to treadºª my courts?º 13 Bringºª no² moreºª vainº oblations;º incenseº is an abominationº unto me; the new moonsº and sabbaths,º the callingºª of assemblies,º I cannot²² away with;¹ª [it is] iniquity,º even the solemn meeting.º 14 Your new moonsº and your appointed feastsº my soulº hateth:ºª they are² a troubleº unto me;² I am wearyºª to bearºª [them]. 15 And when ye spread forthºª your hands,º I will hideºª mine eyesº from² you: yea,² when² ye make manyºª prayers,º I will not² hear:ºª your handsº are fullºª of blood.º

He exhorteth to repentance, with promises and threatenings.

Bewailing their wickedness, he denounceth God's judgments.

21 ¶ How² is the faithfulºª cityº become² an harlot!ºª it was fullº of judgment;º righteousnessº lodgedºª in it; but now² murderers.ºª 22 Thy silverº is become² dross,º thy wineº mixedºª with water:º 23 Thy princesº [are] rebellious,ºª and companionsº of thieves:º every one² lovethºª gifts,º and followeth¹ª after² rewards:º they judgeºª not² the fatherless,º neither² doth the causeº of the widowº comeºª unto² them. 24 Therefore² saithºª the Lord,º the LORDº of hosts,º the mighty Oneº of Israel,º Ah,º I will easeºª me of mine adversaries,º² and avengeºª me of mine enemies:ºª²

He promiseth grace,

25 ¶ And I will turnºª my handº upon² thee, and purely¹² purge awayºª thy dross,º and take awayºª all² thy tin:º 26 And I will restoreºª thy judgesºª as at the first,º and thy counsellorsºª as at the beginning:º afterwardº² thou shalt be called,ºª The cityº of righteousness,º the faithfulºª city.º 27 Zionº shall be redeemedºª with judgment,º and her convertsºª with righteousness.º

and threateneth destruction to the wicked.

28 ¶ And the destructionº of the transgressorsºª and of the sinnersº [shall be] together,º and they that forsakeºª the LORDº shall be consumed.ºª 29 For² they shall be ashamedºª of the oaksº² which² ye have desired,ºª and ye shall be confoundedºª for the gardensº² that² ye have chosen.ºª 30 For² ye shall be² as an oakº whose leafº fadeth,ºª and as a gardenº that² hath no² water.º 31 And the strongº shall be² as tow,º and the makerº of it as a spark,º and they shall bothº burnºª together,º and none² shall quenchºª [them].
