Job Loses His Health

1 aAgain there was a day° when the sons° of God° came° to present° themselves before° the LORD°, and Satan° also° came° among° them to present° himself before° the LORD°. 2 The LORD° said° to Satan°, “Where° have you come° from?” Then Satan° answered° the LORD° and said°, “From roaming° about° on the earth° and walking° around° on it.” 3 The LORD° said° to Satan°, “Have you Iconsidered°°° My servant° Job°? For there° is no° one° like° him on the earth°, a blameless° and upright° man° IIfearing° God° and turning° away° from evil°. And he still° aholds° fast° his integrity°, although you incited° Me against him to IIIruin° him without° cause°.” 4 Satan° answered° the LORD° and said°, “Skin° for skin°! Yes, all° that a man° has he will give° for his life°. 5 aHowever°, put° forth° Your hand° now°, and btouch° his bone° and his flesh°; he will curse° You to Your face°.” 6 So the LORD° said° to Satan°, “Behold°, he is in your Ipower°, only° spare° his life°.”

9 ¶ Then his wife° said° to him, “Do you still° hold° fast° your integrity°? Curse° God° and die°!” 10 But he said° to her, “You speak° as one° of the foolish° women° speaks°. aShall we indeed° accept° good° from God° and not accept° adversity°?” bIn all° this° Job° did not sin° with his lips°.

11 ¶ Now when Job’s° three° friends° heard° of all° this° adversity° that had come° upon him, they came° each° one° from his own place°, Eliphaz° the aTemanite°, Bildad° the bShuhite° and Zophar° the Naamathite°; and they made° an appointment° together° to come° to csympathize° with him and comfort° him. 12 When they lifted° up their eyes° at a distance° and did not recognize° him, they raised° their voices° and wept°. And each° of them atore° his robe° and they bthrew° dust° over° their heads° toward the sky°. 13 aThen they sat° down° on the ground° with him for seven° days° and seven° nights° with no° one° speaking° a word° to him, for they saw° that [his] pain° was very° great°.

Satan appearing again before God obtaineth further leave to tempt Job.

1 ¶ Again there was² a dayº when the sonsº of Godº cameºª to present¹ª themselves² before² the LORD,º and Satanº cameºª also² amongº them to present¹ª himself² before² the LORD.º 2 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Satan,º From whenceº²² comestºª thou? He smiteth him with sore boils.

7 ¶ So went¹ª Satan¹ forthºª² from²² the presenceº of the LORD,º and smoteºª² Jobº with soreº boilsº from the soleº² of his footº unto² his crown.º 8 And he tookºª him a potsherdº to scrape¹ª himself² withal; and he² sat downºª amongº the ashes.º

Job reproveth his wife, moving him to curse God.

9 ¶ Then saidºª his wifeº unto him, Dost thou still² retainºª thine integrity?º curseºª God,º and die.ºª 10 But he saidºª unto² her, Thou speakestºª as oneº of the foolish womenº speaketh.ºª What?º shall we receiveºª² goodº at the hand²² of God,º and shall we not² receiveºª evil?º In all² this² did not² Jobº sinºª with his lips.º

11 ¶ Now when Job'sº threeº friendsº heardºª² of all² this² evilº that was comeºª upon² him, they cameºª every oneº from his own place;º² Eliphazº the Temanite,º and Bildadº the Shuhite,º and Zopharº the Naamathite:º for they had made an appointmentºª togetherº to comeºª to mournºª with him and to comfortºª him. 12 And when they lifted upºª² their eyesº afar off,º² and knewºª him not,² they lifted upºª their voice,º and wept;ºª and they rentºª every oneº his mantle,º and sprinkledºª dustº upon² their headsº toward heaven.º 13 So they sat downºª with² him upon the groundº sevenº daysº and sevenº nights,º and none² spakeºª a wordº unto² him: for² they sawºª that² [his] griefº was very¹ great.ºª²
