NASB — Proverbs 14 — KJV

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

  1 The awise° woman° builds° her house°,
But the foolish° tears° it down° with her own hands°.
  2 He who awalks° in his uprightness° fears° the LORD°,
But he who is bdevious° in his ways° despises° Him.
  3 In the mouth° of the foolish° is a rod° Ifor [his] back°,
But athe lips° of the wise° will protect° them.
  4 Where no° oxen° are, the manger° is clean°,
But much° revenue° [comes] by the strength° of the ox°.
  5 A atrustworthy° witness° will not lie°,
  But a bfalse° witness° Icutters° lies°.
  6 A scoffer° seeks° wisdom° and [finds] none°,
  But knowledge° is easy° to one who has° understanding°.
  7 Leave° the apresence° of a fool°,
Or you will not Idiscern° IIwords° of knowledge°.
  8 The wisdom° of the sensible° is to understand° his way°,
  But athe foolishness° of fools° is deceit°.
  9 Fools° mock° at Isin°,
  But aamong° the upright° there is IIgood° will°.
  10 The heart° knows° its own° abitterness°,
  And a stranger° does not share° its joy°.
  11 The ahouse° of the wicked° will be destroyed°,
But the tent° of the upright° will flourish°.
  12 There° ais a way° [which seems] right° to a man°,
But its bend° is the way° of death°.
  13 Even° in laughter° the heart° may be in pain°,
And the aend° of joy° may be grief°.
  14 The backslider° in heart° will have° his afill° of his own ways°,
  But a good° man° will b[be satisfied] Iwith his.
  15 The Inaive° believes° everything°,
  But the sensible° man° considers° his steps°.
  16 A wise° man° Iis cautious° and aturns° away° from evil°,
  But a fool° is arrogant° and careless°.
  17 A quick-tempered°° man acts° foolishly°,
  And a man° of evil° devices° is hated°.
  18 The Inaive° inherit° foolishness°,
  But the sensible° are crowned° with knowledge°.
  19 The aevil° will bow° down° before° the good°,
And the wicked° at the gates° of the righteous°.
  20 The apoor° is hated° even° by his neighbor°,
But those who love° the rich° are many°.
  21 He who adespises° his neighbor° sins°,
But bhappy° is he who is gracious° to the Ipoor°.
  22 Will they not go° astray° who adevise° evil°?
But kindness° and truth° [will be to] those who devise° good°.
  23 In all° labor° there is profit°,
  But Imere° talk° [leads] only° to poverty°.
  24 The acrown° of the wise° is their riches°,
  [But] the folly° of fools° is foolishness°.
  25 A truthful° witness° saves° lives°,
  But he who Iautters° lies° is IItreacherous°.
  26 In the Iafear° of the LORD° there is strong° confidence°,
  And IIhis children° will have° refuge°.
  27 The Ifear° of the LORD° is a fountain° of life°,
That one may avoid° the snares° of death°.
  28 In a multitude° of people° is a king’s° glory°,
  But in the dearth° of people° is a prince’s° ruin°.
  29 He who° is aslow° to anger° has great° understanding°,
  But he who° is Iquick-tempered°° exalts° folly°.
  30 A atranquil° heart° is life° to the body°,
  But passion° is brottenness° to the bones°.
  31 He awho oppresses° the poor° taunts° bhis Maker°,
But he who is gracious° to the needy° honors° Him.
  32 The wicked° is athrust° down° by his Iwrongdoing°,
  But the brighteous° has° a refuge° when he dies°.
  33 Wisdom° rests° in the heart° of one who has° understanding°,
But in the Ihearts° of fools° it is made° known°.
  34 Righteousness° exalts° a nation°,
  But sin° is a disgrace° to [any] people°.
  35 The king’s° favor° is toward a aservant° who acts° wisely°,
But his anger° is toward him who acts° shamefully°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ Every wiseº womanº buildethºª her house:º but the foolishº plucketh it downºª with her hands.º 2 He that walkethºª in his uprightnessº feareth¹² the LORD:º but [he that is] perverseºª in his waysº despisethºª him. 3 In the mouthº of the foolishº [is] a rodº of pride:º but the lipsº of the wiseº shall preserveºª them. 4 Where no² oxenº [are], the cribº [is] clean:º but muchº increaseº [is] by the strengthº of the ox.º 5 A faithfulº witnessº will not² lie:¹² but a falseº witnessº will utterºª lies.¹ª² 6 A scornerºª seekethºª wisdom,º and [findeth it] not:² but knowledgeº [is] easyºª unto him that understandeth.ºª 7 Go¹ª² from the presenceº² of a foolishº man,º when thou perceivestºª not² [in him] the lipsº of knowledge.º 8 The wisdomº of the prudentº [is] to understandºª his way:º but the follyº of foolsº [is] deceit.º 9 Foolsº make a mockºª at sin:º but among² the righteousº [there is] favour.º 10 The heartº knowethºª his ownº bitterness;º and a strangerºª doth not² intermeddleºª with his joy.º 11 The houseº of the wickedº shall be overthrown:ºª but the tabernacleº of the uprightº shall flourish.ºª 12 There isº a wayº which seemeth rightº untoº a man,º but the endº thereof [are] the waysº of death.º 13 Even² in laughterº the heartº is sorrowful;ºª and the endº of that mirthº [is] heaviness.º 14 The backsliderºª in heartº shall be filledºª with his own ways:º² and a goodº manº [shall be satisfied] from²² himself. 15 The simpleº believethºª every² word:º but the prudentº [man] looketh wellºª to his going.º 16 A wiseº [man] feareth,º and departethºª from evil:º² but the foolº rageth,ºª and is confident.ºª 17 [He that is] soonº angryº dealethºª foolishly:º and a manº of wicked devicesº is hated.ºª 18 The simpleº inheritºª folly:º but the prudentº are crownedºª with knowledge.º 19 The evilº bowºª beforeº the good;º and the wickedº at² the gatesº of the righteous.º 20 The poorºª is hatedºª even² of his own neighbour:º but the richº [hath] manyº friends.ºª 21 He that despisethºª his neighbourº sinneth:ºª but he that hath mercy¹ª on² the poor,ºª¹ happyº [is] he. 22 Do they not² errºª that deviseºª evil?º but mercyº and truthº [shall be] to them that deviseºª good.º 23 In all² labourº there is² profit:º but the talkº of the lipsº [tendeth] only² to penury.º 24 The crownº of the wiseº [is] their riches:º [but] the foolishnessº of foolsº [is] folly.º 25 A trueº witnessº deliverethºª souls:º but a deceitfulº [witness] speakethºª lies.º 26 In the fearº of the LORDº [is] strongº confidence:º and his childrenº shall have² a place of refuge.º 27 The fearº of the LORDº [is] a fountainº of life,º to departºª from the snaresº² of death.º 28 In the multitudeº of peopleº [is] the king'sº honour:º but in the wantº of peopleº [is] the destructionº of the prince.º 29 [He that is] slowº to wrathº [is] of greatº understanding:º but [he that is] hastyº of spiritº exaltethºª folly.º 30 A soundº heartº [is] the lifeº of the flesh:º but envyº the rottennessº of the bones.º 31 He that oppressethºª the poorº reproachethºª his Maker:ºª but he that honourethºª him hath mercyºª on the poor.º 32 The wickedº is driven awayºª in his wickedness:º but the righteousº hath hopeºª in his death.º 33 Wisdomº restethºª in the heartº of him that hath understanding:ºª but [that which is] in the midstº of foolsº is made known.ºª 34 Righteousnessº exaltethºª a nation:º but sinº [is] a reproachº to any people.º 35 The king'sº favourº [is] toward a wiseºª servant:º but his wrathº is² [against] him that causeth shame.ºª
