1 Then aSolomon° Iformed° a marriage° alliance° with Pharaoh° king° of Egypt°, and took° Pharaoh’s° daughter° band brought° her to the city° of David° cuntil° he had finished° building° his own house° and the house° of the LORD° and dthe wall° around° Jerusalem°. 2 aThe people° were still° sacrificing° on the high° places°, because° there was no° house° built° for the name° of the LORD° until° those° days°.

3 ¶ Now aSolomon° loved° the LORD°, bwalking° in the statutes° of his father° David°, except° he sacrificed° and burned° incense° on the high° places°. 4 aThe king° went° to bGibeon° to sacrifice° there°, cfor that was the great° high° place°; Solomon° offered° a thousand° burnt° offerings° on that altar°. 5 aIn Gibeon° the LORD° appeared° to Solomon° bin a dream° at night°; and God° said°, “cAsk° what° [you wish] Me to give° you.”

Solomon’s Prayer

6 Then Solomon° said°, “aYou have shown° great° lovingkindness° to Your servant° David° my father°, baccording° as he walked° before° You in Itruth° and righteousness° and uprightness° of heart° toward° You; and cYou have IIreserved° for him this° great° lovingkindness°, that You have given° him a son° to sit° on his throne°, as [it is] this° day°. 7 Now°, O LORD° my God°, aYou have made° Your servant° king° in place° of my father° David°, yet bI am but a little° child°; cI do not know° how to go° out or come° in. 8 aYour servant° is in the midst° of Your people° which° You have chosen°, ba great° people° who° are too° many° to be numbered° or counted°. 9 So agive° Your servant° Ian understanding° heart° to judge° Your people° bto discern° between° good° and evil°. God’s Answer

10IIt was pleasing° in the sight° of the Lord° that Solomon° had asked° this° thing°. 11 God° said° to him, “Because°° you have asked° this° thing° and have anot asked° for yourself Ilong° life°, nor° have asked° riches° for yourself, nor° have you asked° for the life° of your enemies°, but have asked° for yourself IIdiscernment° to understand° justice°, 12 behold°, aI have done° according to your words°. Behold°, bI have given° you a wise° and discerning° heart°, so° that there has been° no° one like° you before° you, nor° shall one like° you arise° after° you. 13 aI have also° given° you what° you have not asked°, both° briches° and honor°, so° that there will not be any° among the kings° like° you all° your days°. 14 aIf° you walk° in My ways°, keeping° My statutes° and commandments°, as your father° David° walked°, then I will bprolong° your days°.”

15 ¶ Then aSolomon° awoke°, and behold°, it was a dream°. And he came° to Jerusalem° and stood° before° the ark° of the covenant° of the Lord°, and offered° burnt° offerings° and made° peace° offerings°, and bmade° a feast° for all° his servants°.

Solomon Wisely Judges

16 ¶ Then° two° women° who were harlots° came° to the king° and stood° before° him. 17 The one° woman° said°, “Oh°, my lord°, Ithis° woman° and I live° in the same° house°; and I gave° birth° to a child° while° she [was] in the house°. 18 It happened° on the third° day° after I gave° birth°, that this° woman° also° gave° birth° to a child°, and we were together°. There° was no° stranger° with us in the house°, only° the two° of us in the house°. 19 This° woman’s° son° died° in the night°, because° she lay° on it. 20 So she arose° in the middle° of the night° and took° my son° from beside° me while your maidservant° slept°, and laid° him in her bosom°, and laid° her dead° son° in my bosom°. 21 When I rose° in the morning° to nurse° my son°, behold°, he was dead°; but when I looked° at him carefully° in the morning°, behold°, he was not my son°, whom° I had borne°.” 22 Then the other° woman° said°, “No°! For the living° one° is my son°, and the dead° one is your son°.” But Ithe first° woman° said°, “No°! For the dead° one is your son°, and the living° one° is my son°.” Thus they spoke° before° the king°.

For your son° is the dead° one, and my son° is the living° one°.’” 24 The king° said°, “Get° me a sword°.” So they brought° a sword° before° the king°. 25 The king° said°, “Divide° the living° child° in two°, and give° half° to the one° and half° to the other°.” 26 Then the woman° whose° child° [was] the living° one° spoke° to the king°, for Iashe was deeply°° stirred° over° her son° and said°, “Oh°, my lord°, give° her the living° child°, and by no° means° kill° him.” But the other° said°, “He shall be neither°° mine nor° yours; divide° [him]!” 27 Then the king° said°, “Give° Ithe first woman the living° child°, and by no° means° kill° him. She is his mother°.” 28 When all° Israel° heard° of the judgment° which° the king° had Ihanded° down°, they feared° the king°, for athey saw° that the wisdom° of God° was in him to IIadminister° justice°.

5 ¶ In Gibeonº the LORDº appearedºª to² Solomonº in a dreamº by night:º and Godº said,ºª Askºª what² I shall giveºª thee. 6 And Solomonº said,ºª Thou² hast shewedºª unto² thy servantº Davidº my fatherº greatº mercy,º according as² he walkedºª beforeº thee in truth,º and in righteousness,º and in uprightnessº of heartº with² thee; and thou hast keptºª for him² this² greatº kindness,º that thou hast givenºª him a sonº to sitºª on² his throne,º as [it is] this² day.º 7 And now,² O LORDº my God,º thou² hast made² thy servantº kingºª instead² of Davidº my father:º and I² [am but] a littleº child:º I knowºª not² [how] to go outºª or come in.ºª 8 And thy servantº [is] in the midstº of thy peopleº which² thou hast chosen,ºª a greatº people,º that² cannot² be numberedºª nor² countedºª for multitude.º² 9 Giveºª therefore thy servantº an understandingºª heartº to judgeºª² thy people,º that I may discernºª between² goodº and bad:º for² who² is ableºª to judgeºª this² thy so greatº² a people?º 10 And the speechº pleasedººª the Lord,º that² Solomonº had askedºª² this² thing.º 11 And Godº saidºª unto² him, Because²² thou hast askedºª² this² thing,º and hast not² askedºª for thyself longº life;º neither² hast askedºª richesº for thyself, nor² hast askedºª the lifeº of thine enemies;ºª but hast askedºª for thyself understandingºª to discernºª judgment;º 12 Behold,² I have doneºª according to thy words:º lo,² I have givenºª thee a wiseº and an understandingºª heart;º so that² there was² none² like thee² beforeº thee, neither² afterº thee shall any ariseºª like unto thee.² 13 And I have also² givenºª thee that which² thou hast not² asked,ºª both² riches,º and² honour:º so that² there shall not² be² anyº among the kingsº like unto thee² all² thy days.º 14 And if² thou wilt walk¹ª² in my ways,º to keepºª my statutesº and my commandments,º as² thy fatherº Davidº did walk,ºª then I will lengthenºª² thy days.º 15 And Solomonº awoke;ºª and, behold,² [it was] a dream.º And he cameºª to Jerusalem,º and stoodºª beforeº the arkº of the covenantº of the LORD,¹² and offered upºª burnt offerings,º and offeredºª peace offerings,º and madeºª a feastº to all² his servants.º

Solomon's judgment between the two harlots maketh him renowned.

16 ¶ Then² cameºª there twoº women,º [that were] harlots,ºª unto² the king,º and stoodºª beforeº him. 17 And the oneº womanº said,ºª Oº my lord,º I² and this² womanº dwellºª in oneº house;º and I was delivered of a childºª with² her in the house.º 18 And it came to pass² the thirdº dayº after that I was delivered,ºª that this² womanº was deliveredºª also:² and we² [were] together;º [there was] no² strangerºª with² us in the house,º saveº we² twoº in the house.º 19 And this² woman'sº childº diedºª in the night;º because² she overlaidºª² it. 20 And she aroseºª at midnight,ºº and tookºª² my sonº from besideº² me, while thine handmaidº slept,º and laidºª it in her bosom,º and laidºª her deadºª childº in my bosom.º 21 And when I roseºª in the morningº to give my child¹ suck,¹ª²²² behold,² it was dead:ºª but when I had consideredºª² it in the morning,º behold,² it was² not² my son,º which² I did bear.ºª 22 And the otherº womanº said,ºª Nay;² but² the livingº [is] my son,º and the deadºª [is] thy son.º And this² said,ºª No;² but² the deadºª [is] thy son,º and the livingº [is] my son.º Thus they spakeºª beforeº the king.º 23 Then saidºª the king,º The oneº saith,ºª This² [is] my sonº that liveth,º and thy sonº [is] the dead:ºª and the otherº saith,ºª Nay;² but² thy sonº [is] the dead,ºª and my sonº [is] the living.º 24 And the kingº said,ºª Bringºª me a sword.º And they broughtºª a swordº beforeº the king.º 25 And the kingº said,ºª Divideºª² the livingº childº in two,º and giveºª² halfº to the one,º and halfº to the other.º 26 Then spakeºª the womanº whose² the livingº childº [was] unto² the king,º for² her bowelsº yearnedºª upon² her son,º and she said,ºª Oº my lord,º giveºª her² the livingº child,ºª and in no² wise¹ª slayºª it.
