Stripes must not exceed forty.

1 ¶ If² there be² a controversyº between² men,¹² and they comeºª unto² judgment,º that [the judges] may judgeºª them; then they shall justifyºª² the righteous,º and condemnºª² the wicked.º 2 And it shall be,² if² the wicked² man¹ [be] worthy¹ to be beaten,ºª² that the judgeºª shall cause him to lie down,ºª and to be beatenºª before his face,º according¹ to² his fault,º by a certain number.º 3 Fortyº stripes¹ª he may give² him, [and] not² exceed:ºª lest,² [if] he should exceed,ºª and beatºª him above² these² with manyº stripes,º then thy brotherº should seem vileºª¹ unto² thee.

The ox is not to be muzzled.

4 ¶ Thou shalt not² muzzleºª the oxº when he treadeth out¹ª² [the corn].

Of raising seed unto a brother.

5 ¶ If² brethrenº dwellºª together,º and oneº of² them die,ºª and have no² child,º the wifeº of the deadºª shall not² marry² withoutº unto a stranger:ººª her husband's brotherº shall go inºª unto² her, and takeºª her to him to wife,º and perform the duty of an husband's brotherºª unto her. 6 And it shall be,² [that] the firstbornº which² she bearethºª shall succeedºª in² the nameº of his brotherº [which is] dead,ºª that his nameº be not² put outºª of Israel.º² 7 And if² the manº likeºª not² to takeºª² his brother's wife,º then let his brother's wifeº go upºª to the gateº unto² the elders,º and say,ºª My husband's brotherº refusethºª to raise upºª unto his brotherº a nameº in Israel,º he willºª not² perform the duty of my husband's brother.ºª 8 Then the eldersº of his cityº shall callºª him, and speakºª unto² him: and [if] he standºª [to it], and say,ºª I likeºª not² to takeºª her; 9 Then shall his brother's wifeº comeºª unto² him in the presenceº of the elders,º and looseºª his shoeº from off²² his foot,º and spitºª in his face,º and shall answerºª and say,ºª So² shall it be doneºª unto that manº that² will not² build upºª² his brother'sº house.º 10 And his nameº shall be calledºª in Israel,º The houseº of him that hath his shoeº loosed.ºª

Of the immodest woman.

11 ¶ When² men¹² striveºª togetherº one² with another,º¹ and the wifeº of the oneº draweth nearºª for to deliverºª² her husbandº out of the handº² of him that smitethºª him, and putteth forthºª her hand,º and takethºª him by the secrets:º 12 Then thou shalt cut offºª² her hand,º thine eyeº shall not² pityºª [her].

Of unjust weights.

13 ¶ Thou shalt not² have² in thy bagº divers weights,º a greatº and a small.º 14 Thou shalt not² have² in thine houseº divers measures,º a greatº and a small.º 15 [But] thou shalt have² a perfectº and justº weight,º a perfectº and justº measureº shalt thou have:² that² thy daysº may be lengthenedºª in² the landº which² the LORDº thy Godº givethºª thee. 16 For² all² that doºª such things,º [and] all² that doºª unrighteously,º [are] an abominationº unto the LORDº thy God.º

The memory of Amalek is to be blotted out.

17 ¶ Rememberºª² what² Amalekº didºª unto thee by the way,º when ye were come forthºª out of Egypt;º² 18 How² he metºª thee by the way,º and smote the hindmostºª of thee, [even] all² [that were] feebleºª behindº thee, when thou² [wast] faintº and weary;º and he feared¹² not² God.º 19 Therefore it shall be,² when the LORDº thy Godº hath given thee restºª from all²² thine enemiesºª round about,º² in the landº which² the LORDº thy Godº givethºª thee [for] an inheritanceº to possessºª it, [that] thou shalt blot outºª² the remembranceº of Amalekº from under²² heaven;º thou shalt not² forgetºª [it].
