Joshua's exhortation before his death,

1 ¶ And it came to pass² a longº timeº² afterº that² the LORDº had given restºª unto Israelº from all²² their enemiesºª round about,º² that Joshuaº waxed oldºª [and] strickenºª in age.º 2 And Joshuaº calledºª for all² Israel,º [and] for their elders,º and for their heads,º and for their judges,ºª and for their officers,ºª and saidºª unto² them, I² am oldºª [and] strickenºª in age:º

by former benefits,

3 And ye² have seenºª² all² that² the LORDº your Godº hath doneºª unto all² these² nationsº becauseº² of you; for² the LORDº your Godº [is] he² that hath foughtºª for you. 4 Behold,ºª I have divided¹ª unto you by lot²² these² nationsº that remain,ºª to be an inheritanceº for your tribes,º from² Jordan,º with all² the nationsº that² I have cut off,ºª even unto the greatº seaº westward.ºº

by promises,

5 And the LORDº your God,º he² shall expelºª them from beforeº² you, and driveºª them from out of your sight;º² and ye shall possessºª² their land,º as² the LORDº your Godº hath promisedºª unto you. 6 Be ye therefore veryº courageousºª to keepºª and to doºª² all² that is writtenºª in the bookº of the lawº of Moses,º that ye turnºª not² aside² therefrom² [to] the right handº or [to] the left;º 7 That ye comeºª not² among these² nations,º these² that remainºª among you; neither² make mentionºª of the nameº of their gods,º nor² cause to swearºª [by them], neither² serveºª them, nor² bow¹ª yourselves² unto them: 8 But²² cleaveºª unto the LORDº your God,º as² ye have doneºª unto² this² day.º 9 For the LORDº hath driven outºª from beforeº² you greatº nationsº and strong:º but [as for] you,² no² manº hath been able to standºª beforeº you unto² this² day.º 10 Oneº manº of² you shall chaseºª a thousand:º for² the LORDº your God,º he² [it is] that fightethºª for you, as² he hath promisedºª you.

and by threatenings.

11 Take goodº heedºª therefore unto yourselves,º that ye loveºª² the LORDº your God.º 12 Else² if² ye do in any wise¹ª go back,ºª and cleaveºª unto the remnantº of these² nations,º [even] these² that remainºª among² you, and shall make marriagesºª with them, and go inºª unto them, and they² to you: 13 Know¹ª for a certaintyºª that² the LORDº your Godº will no² moreºª drive outºª [any of]² these² nationsº from beforeº² you; but they shall be² snaresº and trapsº unto you, and scourgesº in your sides,º and thorns¹² in your eyes,º until² ye perishºª from off²² this² goodº landº which² the LORDº your Godº hath givenºª you. 14 And, behold,² this dayº I² [am] goingºª the wayº of all² the earth:º and ye knowºª in all² your heartsº and in all² your souls,º that² not² oneº thingº hath failedºª of all²² the goodº thingsº which² the LORDº your Godº spakeºª concerning² you; all² are come to passºª unto you, [and] not² oneº thingº hath failedºª thereof.² 15 Therefore it shall come to pass,² [that] as² all² goodº thingsº are comeºª upon² you, which² the LORDº your Godº promisedºª² you; so² shall the LORDº bringºª upon² you² all² evilº things,º until² he have destroyedºª you from off²² this² goodº landº which² the LORDº your Godº hath givenºª you. 16 When ye have transgressedºª² the covenantº of the LORDº your God,º which² he commandedºª you, and have goneºª and servedºª otherº gods,º and bowed¹ª yourselves² to them; then shall the angerº of the LORDº be kindledºª against you, and ye shall perishºª quicklyº from off²² the goodº landº which² he hath givenºª unto you.
