Divers kings are overcome at the waters of Merom.

1 ¶ And it came to pass,² when Jabinº kingº of Hazorº had heardºª [those things], that he sentºª to² Jobabº kingº of Madon,º and to² the kingº of Shimron,º and to² the kingº of Achshaph,º 2 And to² the kingsº that² [were] on the northº² of the mountains,º and of the plainsº southº of Chinneroth,º and in the valley,º and in the bordersº of Dorº on the west,º² 3 [And to] the Canaaniteº on the eastº² and on the west,º² and [to] the Amorite,º and the Hittite,º and the Perizzite,º and the Jebusiteº in the mountains,º and [to] the Hiviteº under² Hermonº in the landº of Mizpeh.º 4 And they went out,ºª they² and all² their hostsº with² them, muchº people,º even as the sandº that² [is] upon² the seaº shoreº in multitude,º with horsesº and chariotsº veryº many.º 5 And when all² these² kingsº were met together,ºª they cameºª and pitchedºª togetherº at² the watersº of Merom,º to fightºª against² Israel.º

6 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª unto² Joshua,º Be not² afraidºª because¹ of²² them: for² to morrowº about this² timeº will I² deliver them upºª² all² slainº beforeº Israel:º thou shalt houghºª² their horses,º and burnºª their chariotsº with fire.º 7 So Joshuaº came,ºª and all² the peopleº of warº with² him, against² them by² the watersº of Meromº suddenly;º and they fell² upon¹ª them. 8 And the LORDº deliveredºª them into the handº of Israel,º who smoteºª them, and chasedºª them unto² greatº Zidon,º and unto² Misrephothmaim,º and unto² the valleyº of Mizpehº eastward;º and they smoteºª them, until² they leftºª them none² remaining.º 9 And Joshuaº didºª unto them as² the LORDº badeºª him: he houghedºª² their horses,º and burntºª their chariotsº with fire.º

Hazor is taken and burnt.

10 ¶ And Joshuaº at that² timeº turned back,ºª and tookºª² Hazor,º and smoteºª the kingº thereof with the sword:º for² Hazorº beforetimeº was the headº of all² those² kingdoms.º 11 And they smoteºª² all² the soulsº that² [were] therein with the edgeº of the sword,º utterly destroyingºª [them]: there was not² any² leftºª to breathe:º and he burntºª Hazorº with fire.º 12 And all² the citiesº of those² kings,º and all² the kingsº of them, did Joshuaº take,ºª and smoteºª them with the edgeº of the sword,º [and] he utterly destroyedºª them, as² Mosesº the servantº of the LORDº commanded.ºª 13 But² [as for] the citiesº that stood¹ª still² in² their strength,º Israelº burnedºª none² of them, saveº² Hazorº only;² [that] did Joshuaº burn.ºª 14 And all² the spoilº of these² cities,º and the cattle,º the childrenº of Israelº took for a preyºª unto themselves; but²² every² manº they smoteºª with the edgeº of the sword,º until² they had destroyedºª them, neither² leftºª they any² to breathe.º

15 ¶ As² the LORDº commandedºª² Mosesº his servant,º so² did Mosesº commandºª² Joshua,º and so² didºª Joshua;º he left¹ª nothing¹ undoneºª²² of all²² that² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses.º

All the country is taken by Joshua.

16 So Joshuaº tookºª² all² that² land,º the hills,º and all² the south country,º and all² the landº of Goshen,º and the valley,º and the plain,º and the mountainº of Israel,º and the valleyº of the same; 17 [Even] from² the mountº Halak,º that goeth upºª to Seir,º even unto² Baalgadº in the valleyº of Lebanonº under² mountº Hermon:º and all² their kingsº he took,ºª and smoteºª them, and slewºª them. 18 Joshuaº madeºª warº a longº timeº with² all² those² kings.º 19 There was² not² a cityº that² made peaceºª with² the childrenº of Israel,º save² the Hivitesº the inhabitantsºª of Gibeon:º² all² [other] they tookºª in battle.º 20 For² it was² of²² the LORDº to hardenºª² their hearts,º that they should come againstºª² Israelº in battle,º that² he might destroy² them utterly,¹ª [and] that they might have² no² favour,º but² that² he might destroyºª them, as² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses.º

The Anakims cut off.

21 ¶ And at that² timeº cameºª Joshua,º and cut offºª² the Anakimsº from² the mountains,º from² Hebron,º from² Debir,º from² Anab,º and from all²² the mountainsº of Judah,º and from all²² the mountainsº of Israel:º Joshuaº destroyed² them utterly¹ª with² their cities.º 22 There was none² of the Anakimsº leftºª in the landº of the childrenº of Israel:º only² in Gaza,º in Gath,º and in Ashdod,º there remained.ºª 23 So Joshuaº tookºª² the whole² land,º according to all² that² the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses;º and Joshuaº gaveºª it for an inheritanceº unto Israelº according to their divisionsº by their tribes.º And the landº restedºª from war.º²
