The Midianites are spoiled, and Balaam slain.

1 ¶ And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Moses,º saying,ºª 2 Avengeººª the childrenº of Israelº of²² the Midianites:º afterwardº shalt thou be gatheredºª unto² thy people.º 3 And Mosesº spakeºª unto² the people,º saying,ºª Armºª some¹² of yourselves²² unto the war,º and let them go² against² the Midianites,º and avengeººª the LORDº of Midian.º 4 Of every tribeº a thousand,ºº throughout all² the tribesº of Israel,º shall ye sendºª to the war.º 5 So there were deliveredºª out of the thousandsº² of Israel,º a thousandº of [every] tribe,º twelveºº thousandº armedºª for war.º 6 And Mosesº sentºª them to the war,º a thousandº of [every] tribe,º them and Phinehasº the sonº of Eleazarº the priest,º to the war,º with the holyº instruments,º and the trumpetsº to blowº in his hand.º 7 And they warredºª against² the Midianites,º as² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses;º and they slewºª all² the males.º 8 And they slewºª the kingsº of Midian,º besideº the rest of them that were slain;º [namely],² Evi,º and Rekem,º and Zur,º and Hur,º and Reba,º fiveº kingsº of Midian:º Balaamº also the sonº of Beorº they slewºª with the sword.º 9 And the childrenº of Israelº took [all]² the womenº of Midianº captives,ºª and their little ones,º and took the spoilºª of all² their cattle,º and all² their flocks,º and all² their goods.º 10 And they burntºª all² their citiesº wherein they dwelt,º and all² their goodly castles,º with fire.º 11 And they tookºª² all² the spoil,º and all² the prey,º [both] of menº and of beasts.º 12 And they broughtºª² the captives,º and the prey,º and the spoil,º unto² Moses,º and Eleazarº the priest,º and unto² the congregationº of the childrenº of Israel,º unto² the campº at² the plainsº of Moab,º which² [are] by² Jordanº [near] Jericho.º

Moses is wroth with the officers for saving the women alive.

13 ¶ And Moses,º and Eleazarº the priest,º and all² the princesº of the congregation,º went forthºª to meetºª them withoutº²² the camp.º 14 And Mosesº was wrothºª with² the officersºª of the host,º [with] the captainsº over thousands,º and captainsº over hundreds,º which cameºª from¹ the battle.º²² 15 And Mosesº saidºª unto² them, Have ye saved¹ª all the women¹ alive?ºª²² 16 Behold,² theseº causedºª the childrenº of Israel,º through the counselº of Balaam,º to commitºª trespassº against the LORDº in² the matterº of Peor,º and there was² a plagueº among the congregationº of the LORD.º 17 Now² therefore killºª every² maleº among the little ones,º and killºª every² womanº that hath knownºª manº by lyingº with him.º 18 But all² the womenº children,º that² have not² knownºª a manº by lyingº with him, keep aliveºª for yourselves.

How the soldiers, with their captives and spoil, are to be purified.

19 And do ye² abideºª withoutº² the campº sevenº days:º whosoever² hath killedºª any person,º and whosoever² hath touchedºª any slain,º purifyºª [both] yourselves² and your captivesº on the thirdº day,º and on the seventhº day.º 20 And purifyºª all² [your] raiment,º and all² that is madeº of skins,º and all² workº of goats'º [hair], and all² things² made¹ of wood.º

21 ¶ And Eleazarº the priestº saidºª unto² the men¹² of warº which wentºª to the battle,º This² [is] the ordinanceº of the lawº which² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses;º 22 Only²² the gold,º and the silver,º² the brass,º² the iron,º² the tin,º and the lead,º 23 Every² thingº that² may abideºª the fire,º ye shall make [it] go² through¹ª the fire,º and it shall be clean:ºª nevertheless² it shall be purifiedºª with the waterº of separation:º and all² that² abidethºª not² the fireº ye shall make go² through¹ª the water.º 24 And ye shall washºª your clothesº on the seventhº day,º and ye shall be clean,ºª and afterwardº ye shall comeºª into² the camp.º

The proportion whereby the prey is to be divided.

25 ¶ And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Moses,º saying,ºª 26 Takeºª² the sumº of the preyº that was taken,º [both] of manº and of beast,º thou,² and Eleazarº the priest,º and the chiefº fathersº of the congregation:º 27 And divideºª² the preyº into two parts;¹ª between² them that tookºª the warº upon them, who went outºª to battle,º and between² all² the congregation:º 28 And levyºª a tributeº unto the LORDº of²² the men¹² of warº which went outºª to battle:º oneº soulº of fiveº² hundred,º [both] of² the persons,º and of² the beeves,º and of² the asses,º and of² the sheep:º 29 Takeºª [it] of their half,º² and giveºª it unto Eleazarº the priest,º [for] an heave offeringº of the LORD.º 30 And of the childrenº of Israel'sº half,º² thou shalt takeºª oneº portionºª of² fifty,º of² the persons,º of² the beeves,º of² the asses,º and of² the flocks,º of all manner²² of beasts,º and giveºª them unto the Levites,º which keepºª the chargeº of the tabernacleº of the LORD.º 31 And Mosesº and Eleazarº the priestº didºª as² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses.º 32 And the booty,º [being] the restº of the preyº which² the men² of¹ warº had caught,ºª was² sixº hundredº thousandº and seventyº thousandº and fiveº thousandº sheep,º 33 And threescore and twelveºº thousandº beeves,º 34 And threescoreº and oneº thousandº asses,º 35 And thirtyº and twoº thousandº personsºº in all,º² of² womenº that² had not² knownºª man¹ by lying¹ with² him.² 36 And the half,º [which was] the portionº of them that went outºª to war,º was² in numberº threeº hundredº thousandº and sevenº and thirtyº thousandº and fiveº hundredº sheep:º 37 And the LORD'Sº tributeº of² the sheepº was² sixº hundredº and threescore and fifteen.ºº 38 And the beevesº [were] thirtyº and sixº thousand;º of which the LORD'Sº tributeº [was] threescore and twelve.ºº 39 And the assesº [were] thirtyº thousandº and fiveº hundred;º of which the LORD'Sº tributeº [was] threescoreº and one.º 40 And the personsºº [were] sixteenºº thousand;º of which the LORD'Sº tributeº [was] thirtyº and twoº persons.º 41 And Mosesº gaveºª² the tribute,º [which was] the LORD'Sº heave offering,º unto Eleazarº the priest,º as² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses.º 42 And of the childrenº of Israel'sº half,º² which² Mosesº dividedºª from² the men¹² that warred,ºª 43 (Now the halfº [that pertained unto] the congregationº was² threeº hundredº thousandº and thirtyº thousandº [and] sevenº thousandº and fiveº hundredº sheep,º¹ 44 And thirtyº and sixº thousandº beeves,º 45 And thirtyº thousandº assesº and fiveº hundred,º 46 And sixteenºº thousandº persons;)ºº 47 Even of the childrenº of Israel'sº half,º² Mosesº tookºª oneº² portionºª of² fifty,º [both] of² manº and of² beast,º and gaveºª them unto the Levites,º which keptºª the chargeº of the tabernacleº of the LORD;º as² the LORDº commandedºª² Moses.º

The voluntary oblation unto the treasury of the LORD.

48 ¶ And the officersºª which² [were] over thousandsº of the host,º the captainsº of thousands,º and captainsº of hundreds,º came nearºª unto² Moses:º 49 And they saidºª unto² Moses,º Thy servantsº have takenºª² the sumº of the men¹² of warº which² [are] under our charge,º and there lackethºª not² one manº of² us. 50 We have therefore broughtºª² an oblationº for the LORD,º what² every manº hath gotten,ºª of jewelsº of gold,º chains,º and bracelets,º rings,º earrings,º and tablets,º to make an atonementºª for² our soulsº beforeº the LORD.º 51 And Mosesº and Eleazarº the priestº tookºª² the goldº of²² them, [even] all² wroughtº jewels.º 52 And all² the goldº of the offeringº that² they offered upºª to the LORD,º of²² the captainsº of thousands,º and of²² the captainsº of hundreds,º was² sixteenºº thousandº sevenº hundredº and fiftyº shekels.º 53 ([For] the men¹² of warº had taken spoil,ºª every manº for himself.) 54 And Mosesº and Eleazarº the priestº tookºª² the goldº of²² the captainsº of thousandsº and of hundreds,º and broughtºª it into² the tabernacleº of the congregation,º [for] a memorialº for the childrenº of Israelº beforeº the LORD.º
