1 Then it happened° when David° and his men° came° to aZiklag° on the third° day°, that bthe Amalekites° had made° a raid° on the INegev° and on cZiklag°, and had IIoverthrown° Ziklag° and burned° it with fire°; 2 and they took° captive° the women° [and all] who° were in it, both° small° and great°, Iawithout° killing° anyone°, and carried° [them] off° and went° their way°. 3 When David° and his men° came° to the city°, behold°, it was burned° with fire°, and their wives° and their sons° and their daughters° had been taken° captive°. 4 Then David° and the people° who° were with him alifted° their voices° and wept° until°° there° was no° strength° in them to weep°. 5 Now aDavid’s° two° wives° had been taken° captive°, Ahinoam° the Jezreelitess° and Abigail° the Iwidow° of Nabal° the Carmelite°. 6 Moreover David° was greatly° distressed° because° athe people° spoke° of stoning° him, for all° the people° were Iembittered°, each° one° because° of his sons° and his daughters°. 7 ¶ Then aDavid° said° to bAbiathar° the priest°, the son° of Ahimelech°, “Please° bring° me the ephod°.” So Abiathar° brought° the ephod° to David°. 8 aDavid° inquired° of the LORD°, saying°, “bShall I pursue° this° band°? Shall I overtake° them?” And He said° to him, “Pursue°, for you will surely° overtake° them, cand you will surely° rescue° [all].” 9 So David° went°, ahe and the six° hundred° men° who° were with him, and came° to the brook° Besor°, [where] those left° behind° remained°. 10 But David° pursued°, he and four° hundred° men°, for atwo hundred° who° were too° exhausted° to cross° the brook° Besor° remained° [behind].

11 ¶ Now they found° an Egyptian° in the field° and brought° him to David°, and gave° him bread° and he ate°, and they provided° him water° to drink°. 12 They gave° him a piece° of fig° cake° and two° clusters° of raisins°, and he ate°; athen his spirit° Irevived°. For he had not eaten° bread° or drunk° water° for three° days° and three° nights°. 13 David° said° to him, “To whom° do you belong? And where° are you from?” And he said°, “I am a young° man° of Egypt°, a servant° of an Amalekite°; and my master° left° me behind° when° I fell° sick° three° days° ago. 14 We made° a raid° on athe INegev° of the Cherethites°, and on that which° belongs to Judah°, and on bthe INegev° of Caleb°, and cwe burned° Ziklag° with fire°.” 15 Then David° said° to him, “Will you bring° me down° to this° band°?” And he said°, “Swear° to me by God° that you will not kill° me or deliver° me into the hands° of my master°, and I will bring° you down° to this° band°.”

16 ¶ When he had brought° him down°, behold°, they were Ispread° over° all° the land°, aeating° and drinking° and IIdancing° because of ball° the great° spoil° that they had taken° from the land° of the Philistines° and from the land° of Judah°. 17 David° Islaughtered° them afrom the twilight° IIuntil° the evening° of IIIthe next° day°; and not a man° of them escaped°, except°° four° hundred° young° men° who° rode° on bcamels° and fled°. 18 So David° arecovered° all° that the Amalekites° had taken°, and Irescued° his two° wives°. 19 But nothing° of theirs° was missing°, whether° small° or° great°, sons° or daughters°, spoil° or° anything° that they had taken° for themselves°; aDavid° brought° [it] all° back°. 20 So David° had Icaptured° all° the sheep° and the cattle° [which the people] drove° ahead° of IIthe [other] livestock°, and they said°, “aThis° is David’s° spoil°.”

The Spoils Are Divided

21 ¶ When aDavid° came° to the two hundred° men° who° were too° exhausted° to follow°° David°, who had also been left° at the brook° Besor°, and they went° out to meet° David° and to meet° the people° who° were with him, then David° approached° the people° and greeted°° them. 22 Then all° the wicked° and worthless° men° among° those who° went° with David° said°, “Because°° they did not go° with Ius, we will not give° them any° of the spoil° that we have recovered°, except°° to every° man° his wife° and his children°, that they may lead° [them] away° and depart°.” 23 Then David° said°, “You must not do° so°, my brothers°, with what° the LORD° has given° us, who has kept° us and delivered° into our hand° the band° that came° against° us. 24 And who° will listen° to you in this° matter°? For aas his share° is who goes° down° to the battle°, so shall his share° be who stays° by the baggage°; they shall share° alike°.” 25 So it has been° from that day° forward°, that he made° it a statute° and an ordinance° for Israel° to this° day°.

The Amalekites spoil Ziklag.

1 ¶ And it came to pass,² when Davidº and his men¹² were comeºª to Ziklagº on the thirdº day,º that the Amalekitesº had invadedºª² the south,º and Ziklag,º and smittenºª² Ziklag,º and burnedºª it with fire;º 2 And had taken the women¹ captives,ºª²² that² [were] therein: they slewºª not² any,º either² greatº or small,º² but carried [them] away,ºª and went¹ª² on their way.º

3 ¶ So Davidº and his men¹² cameºª to² the city,º and, behold,² [it was] burnedºª with fire;º and their wives,º and their sons,º and their daughters,º were taken captives.ºª

David asking counsel is encouraged by God to pursue them.

4 Then Davidº and the peopleº that² [were] with² him lifted upºª² their voiceº and wept,ºª until²² they had no more² powerº to weep.ºª 5 And David'sº twoº wivesº were taken captives,ºª Ahinoamº the Jezreelitess,º and Abigailº the wifeº of Nabalº the Carmelite.º 6 And Davidº was greatlyº distressed;ºª for² the peopleº spakeºª of stoningºª him, because² the soulº of all² the peopleº was grieved,ºª every manº for² his sonsº and for² his daughters:º but Davidº encouraged¹ª himself² in the LORDº his God.º 7 And Davidº saidºª to² Abiatharº the priest,º Ahimelech'sº son,º I pray thee,² bring me hitherºª the ephod.º And Abiatharº broughtºª thither² the ephodº to² David.º 8 And Davidº enquiredºª at the LORD,º saying,ºª Shall I pursueºª afterº this² troop?º shall I overtakeºª them? By the means of a revived Egyptian he is brought to the enemies, and recovereth all the spoil.

11 ¶ And they foundºª an Egyptianºº in the field,º and broughtºª him to² David,º and gaveºª him bread,º and he did eat;ºª and they made him drinkºª water;º 12 And they gaveºª him a pieceº of a cake¹ of figs,² and twoº clusters of raisins:º and when he had eaten,ºª his spiritº came againºª to² him: for² he had eatenºª no² bread,º nor² drunkºª [any] water,º threeº daysº and threeº nights.º 13 And Davidº saidºª unto him, To whom² [belongest] thou?² and whence²²² [art] thou?² And he said,ºª I² [am] a young manº of Egypt,º servantº to an Amalekite;ºº and my masterº leftºª me, because² threeº daysº agone I fell sick.ºª 14 We² made an invasionºª [upon] the southº of the Cherethites,º and upon² [the coast] which² [belongeth] to Judah,º and upon² the southº of Caleb;º and we burnedºª Ziklagº with fire.º 15 And Davidº saidºª to² him, Canst thou bring me downºª to² this² company?º And he said,ºª Swearºª unto me by God,º that thou wilt neither² killºª me, norº deliverºª me into the handsº of my master,º and I will bring thee downºª to² this² company.º
