Job’s Character and Wealth

1 There was a man° in the aland° of Uz° whose name° was bJob°; and that man° was cblameless°, upright°, dfearing° God° and eturning° away° from evil°. 2 aSeven° sons° and three° daughters° were born° to him. 3 aHis possessions° also were 7,000°° sheep°, 3,000°° camels°, 500°° yoke° of oxen°, 500°° female° donkeys°, and very° many° servants°; and that man° was bthe greatest° of all° the Imen° of the east°. 4 His sons° used to go° and hold° a feast° in the house° of each° one° on his day°, and they would send° and invite° their three° sisters° to eat° and drink° with them. 5 When° the days° of feasting° had completed° their cycle°, Job° would send° and consecrate° them, rising° up early° in the morning° and offering° aburnt° offerings° [according to] the number° of them all°; for Job° said°, “bPerhaps° my sons° have sinned° and ccursed° God° in their hearts°.” Thus° Job° did° continually°°.

6aNow there was a day° when the bsons° of God° came° to present° themselves before° the LORD°, and ISatan° also° came° among° them. 7 The LORD° said° to Satan°, “From where° do you come°?” Then Satan° answered° the LORD° and said°, “aFrom roaming° about° on the earth° and walking° around° on it.” 8 The LORD° said° to Satan°, “Have you Iconsidered°°° aMy servant° Job°? For there° is no° one° like° him on the earth°, ba blameless° and upright° man°, IIfearing° God° and turning° away° from evil°.” 9 Then aSatan° answered° the ILORD°, “Does Job° fear° God° for nothing°? 10 aHave You not made° a hedge° about° him and his house° and all° that he has, on every° side°? bYou have blessed° the work° of his hands°, and his cpossessions° have increased° in the land°. 11 aBut put° forth° Your hand° now° and btouch° all° that he has; he will surely°° curse° You to Your face°.” 12 Then the LORD° said° to Satan°, “Behold°, all° that he has is in your Ipower°, only° do not put° forth° your hand° on him.” So Satan° departed° from the presence° of the LORD°.

Satan Allowed to Test Job

13 ¶ Now on the day° when his sons° and his daughters° were eating° and drinking° wine° in their oldest° brother’s° house°, 14 a messenger° came° to Job° and said°, “The oxen° were plowing° and the Idonkeys° feeding° beside°° them, 15 and Ithe aSabeans° IIattacked° and took° them. They also IIIslew° the servants° with the edge° of the sword°, and IVI alone°° have escaped° to tell° you.” 16 While he was still° speaking°, another° also came° and said°, “aThe fire° of God° fell° from heaven° and burned° up the sheep° and the servants° and consumed° them, and I alone°° have escaped° to tell° you.” 17 While he was still° speaking°, another° also came° and said°, “The aChaldeans° formed° three° bands° and made° a raid° on the camels° and took° them and Islew° the servants° with the edge° of the sword°, and I alone°° have escaped° to tell° you.” 18 While he was still speaking°, another° also came° and said°, “Your sons° and your daughters° were eating° and drinking° wine° in their oldest° brother’s° house°, 19 and behold°, a great° wind° came° from across° the wilderness° and struck° the four° corners° of the house°, and it fell° on the young° people° and they died°, and I alone°° have escaped° to tell° you.”

  Blessed° be the name° of the LORD°.”

Satan, appearing before God, by calumniation obtaineth leave to tempt Job.

6 ¶ Now there was² a dayº when the sonsº of Godº cameºª to present¹ª themselves² before² the LORD,º and Satanº cameºª also² amongº them. 7 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Satan,º Whenceº² comestºª thou? Then Satanº answeredºª² the LORD,º and said,ºª From going to and froºª² in the earth,º and from walking up and downºª² in it. 8 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Satan,º Hast thou consideredººª² my servantº Job,º that² [there is] none² like him² in the earth,º a perfectº and an uprightº man,º one that fearethº God,º and eschewethºª evil?º² 9 Then Satanº answeredºª² the LORD,º and said,ºª Doth Jobº fearºª Godº for nought?º 10 Hast not² thou² made an hedgeºª about² him, and aboutº his house,º and about² all² that² he hath on every side?º² thou hast blessedºª the workº of his hands,º and his substanceº is increasedºª in the land.º 11 Butº put forthºª thine handº now,² and touchºª all² that² he hath, and² he will curseºª¹ thee to² thy face.º 12 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Satan,º Behold,² all² that² he hath [is] in thy power;º only² upon² himself put not forthºª² thine hand.º So Satanº went forthºª from²² the presenceº of the LORD.º

Understanding of the loss of his goods and children, in his mourning he blesseth God.

13 ¶ And there was² a dayº when his sonsº and his daughtersº [were] eatingºª and drinkingºª wineº in their eldestº brother'sº house:º 14 And there cameºª a messengerº unto² Job,º and said,ºª The oxenº were² plowing,ºª and the assesº feedingºª besideº² them: 15 And the Sabeansº fellºª [upon them], and took them away;ºª yea, they have slainºª the servantsº with the edgeº of the sword;º and I² only² am escapedºª alone² to tellºª thee. 16 While he² [was] yet² speaking,ºª there cameºª also another,² and said,ºª The fireº of Godº is fallenºª from² heaven,º and hath burned upºª the sheep,º and the servants,º and consumedºª them; and I² only² am escapedºª alone² to tellºª thee. 17 While he² [was] yet² speaking,ºª there cameºª also another,² and said,ºª The Chaldeansº made² out¹ª threeº bands,º and fellºª upon² the camels,º and have carried them away,ºª yea, and slainºª the servantsº with the edgeº of the sword;º and I² only² am escapedºª alone² to tellºª thee. 18 While he² [was] yet² speaking,ºª there cameºª also another,² and said,ºª Thy sonsº and thy daughtersº [were] eatingºª and drinkingºª wineº in their eldestº brother'sº house:º 19 And, behold,² there cameºª a greatº windº fromº² the wilderness,º and smoteºª the fourº cornersº of the house,º and it fellºª upon² the young men,º and they are dead;ºª and I² only² am escapedºª alone² to tellºª thee. 20 Then Jobº arose,ºª and rentºª² his mantle,º and shavedºª² his head,º and fell downºª upon the ground,º and worshipped,ºª 21 And said,ºª Nakedº came I outºª of my mother's¹ womb,º²² and nakedº shall I returnºª thither:² the LORDº gave,ºª and the LORDº hath taken away;ºª blessedºª be² the nameº of the LORD.º 22 In all² this² Jobº sinnedºª not,² nor² chargedºª Godº foolishly.º
