Ahaziah’s Messengers Meet Elijah

1 Now aMoab° rebelled° against Israel° after° the death° of Ahab°. 2 And Ahaziah° fell° through° the lattice° in his upper° chamber° which° [was] in Samaria°, and became° ill°. So he sent° messengers° and said° to them, “Go°, ainquire° of Baal-zebub°, the god° of Ekron°, bwhether° I will recover° from this° sickness°.” 3 But the angel° of the LORD° said° to aElijah° the Tishbite°, “Arise°, go° up to meet° the messengers° of the king° of Samaria° and say° to them, ‘Is it because°° there° is no° God° in Israel° [that] you are going° to inquire° of bBaal-zebub°, the god° of Ekron°?’ 4 Now therefore° thus° says° the LORD°, ‘IaYou shall not come° down° from the bed° where°° you have gone° up, but you shall surely° die°.’” Then Elijah° departed°.

5 ¶ When the messengers° returned° to him he said° to them, “IWhy° have you returned°?” 6 They said° to him, “A man° came° up to meet° us and said° to us, ‘Go°, return° to the king° who° sent° you and say° to him, “Thus° says° the LORD°, ‘Is it because°° there° is no° God° in Israel° [that] you are sending° ato inquire° of Baal-zebub°, the god° of Ekron°? Therefore° Iyou shall not come° down° from the bed° where°° you have gone° up, but shall surely° die°.’”’” 7 He said° to them, “What° kind° of man° was he who° came° up to meet° you and spoke° these° words° to you?” 8 They Ianswered° him, “a[He was] a hairy° man° with a leather° girdle° IIbound° about his loins°.” And he said°, “It is Elijah° the Tishbite°.”

9 ¶ Then [the king] asent° to him a captain° of fifty° with his fifty°. And he went° up to him, and behold°, he was sitting° on the top° of the hill°. And he said° to him, “O man° of God°, the king° says°, ‘Come° down°.’” 10 Elijah° replied° to the captain° of fifty°, “If° I am a man° of God°, alet fire° come° down° from heaven° and consume° you and your fifty°.” bThen fire° came° down° from heaven° and consumed° him and his fifty°.

11 ¶ So he again° sent° to him another° captain° of fifty° with his fifty°. And he said° to him, “O man° of God°, thus° says° the king°, ‘Come° down° quickly°.’” 12 Elijah° replied° to them, “If° I am a man° of God°, let fire° come° down° from heaven° and consume° you and your fifty°.” Then the fire° of God° came° down° from heaven° and consumed° him and his fifty°.

13 ¶ So he aagain° sent° the captain° of a third° fifty° with his fifty°. When the third° captain° of fifty° went° up, he came° and bowed° down° on his knees° before° Elijah°, and begged° him and said° to him, “O man° of God°, please° let my life° and the lives° of these° fifty° servants° of yours be precious° in your sight°. 14 Behold° fire° came° down° from heaven° and consumed° the first° two° captains° of fifty° with their fifties°; but now° let my Ilife° be precious° in your sight°.” 15 aThe angel° of the LORD° said° to Elijah°, “Go° down° with him; bdo not be afraid° of him.” So he arose° and went° down° with him to the king°. 16 Then he said° to him, “Thus° says° the LORD°, ‘Because°° you have sent° messengers° ato inquire° of Baal-zebub°, the god° of Ekron°—is it because°° there° is no° God° in Israel° to inquire° of His word°?—therefore° Iyou shall not come° down° from the bed° where°° you have gone° up, but shall surely° die°.’”

Jehoram Reigns over Israel

17 ¶ So Ahaziah died° according to the word° of the LORD° which° Elijah° had spoken°. And because° he had° no° son°, Jehoram° became° king° in his place° ain the second° year° of Jehoram° the son° of Jehoshaphat°, king° of Judah°. 18 Now the rest° of the acts° of Ahaziah° which° he did°, are they not written° in the Book° of the Chronicles°° of the Kings° of Israel°?

Elijah twice bringeth fire from heaven upon them whom Ahaziah sent to apprehend him.

5 ¶ And when the messengersº turned backºª unto² him, he saidºª unto² them, Why² are ye nowº turned back?ºª 6 And they saidºª unto² him, There cameºª a manº upºª to meetºª us, and saidºª unto² us, Go,¹ª² turn againºª unto² the kingº that² sentºª you, and sayºª unto² him, Thus² saithºª the LORD,º [Is it] not because²² [there is] not² a Godº in Israel,º [that] thou² sendestºª to enquireºª of Baalzebubº the godº of Ekron?º therefore² thou shalt not² come downºª from² that bedº on which²² thou art gone up,ºª but² shalt surely¹ª die.ºª 7 And he saidºª unto² them, What² mannerº of manº [was he] which² came upºª to meetºª you, and toldºª² you² these² words?º 8 And they answeredºª² him, [He was] an hairy¹ man,ºº² and girtºª with a girdleº of leatherº about his loins.º And he said,ºª It² [is] Elijahº the Tishbite.º 9 Then the king¹ sentºª unto² him a captainº of fiftyº with his fifty.º And he went upºª to² him: and, behold,² he satºª on² the topº of an hill.º And he spakeºª unto² him, Thou manº of God,º the kingº hath said,ºª Come down.ºª 10 And Elijahº answeredºª and saidºª to² the captainº of fifty,º If² I² [be] a manº of God,º then let fireº come downºª from² heaven,º and consumeºª thee and thy fifty.º And there came downºª fireº from² heaven,º and consumedºª him and his fifty.º 11 Againºª also he sentºª unto² him anotherº captainº of fiftyº with his fifty.º And he answeredºª and saidºª unto² him, O manº of God,º thus² hath the kingº said,ºª Come downºª quickly.º 12 And Elijahº answeredºª and saidºª unto² them, If² I² [be] a manº of God,º let fireº come downºª from² heaven,º and consumeºª thee and thy fifty.º And the fireº of Godº came downºª from² heaven,º and consumedºª him and his fifty.º

He pitieth the third captian, and, encouraged by an angel, telleth the king of his death.

13 ¶ And he sentºª againºª a captainº of the thirdº fiftyº with his fifty.º And the thirdº captainº of fiftyº went up,ºª and cameºª and fellºª on² his kneesº beforeº Elijah,º and besoughtºª² him, and saidºª unto² him, O manº of God,º I pray thee,² let my life,º and the lifeº of these² fiftyº thy servants,º be preciousºª in thy sight.º 14 Behold,² there came¹ª fire¹ downºª² from² heaven,º and burnt upºª² the twoº captainsº of the formerº fiftiesº with their fifties:º therefore let my lifeº now² be preciousºª in thy sight.º 15 And the angelº of the LORDº saidºª unto² Elijah,º Go downºª with² him: be not afraidºª² of²² him.¹ And he arose,ºª and went downºª with² him unto² the king.º 16 And he saidºª unto² him, Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Forasmuch as²² thou hast sentºª messengersº to enquireºª of Baalzebubº the godº of Ekron,º [is it] not because²² [there is] no² Godº in Israelº to enquireºª of his word?º therefore² thou shalt not² come downºª off² that bedº on which²² thou art gone up,ºª but² shalt surely¹ª die.ºª

17 ¶ So he diedºª according to the wordº of the LORDº which² Elijahº had spoken.ºª And Jehoramº reignedºª in his stead² in the secondº yearº of Jehoramº the sonº of Jehoshaphatº kingº of Judah;º because² he had² no² son.º 18 Now the restº of the actsº of Ahaziahº which² he did,ºª [are] they² not² writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Israel?º
