Abijah being sick, Jeroboam sendeth his wife disguised with presents to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh.

1 ¶ At that² timeº Abijahº the sonº of Jeroboamº fell sick.ºª 2 And Jeroboamº saidºª to his wife,º Arise,ºª I pray thee,² and disguise¹ª thyself,² that² thou² be not² knownºª to be the wifeº of Jeroboam;º and getºª thee to Shiloh:º behold,² there² [is] Ahijahº the prophet,º which² toldºª² me that [I should be] kingº over² this² people.º 3 And takeºª with² thee¹ tenº loaves,º and cracknels,º and a cruseº of honey,º and goºª to² him: he² shall tellºª thee what² shall become² of the child.º 4 And Jeroboam'sº wifeº did² so,¹ª² and arose,ºª and went¹ª² to Shiloh,º and cameºª to the houseº of Ahijah.º But Ahijahº couldºª not² see;ºª for² his eyesº were setºª by reason of his age.º²

Ahijah, forewarned by God, denounceth God's judgment.

5 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª unto² Ahijah,º Behold,² the wifeº of Jeroboamº comethºª to askºª a thingº of²² thee for² her son;º for² he² [is] sick:ºª thusº and thus² shalt thou sayºª unto² her: for it shall be,² when she cometh in,ºª that she² shall feign herself [to be] another¹ª [woman].² 6 And it was² [so], when Ahijahº heardºª² the soundº of her feet,º as she came inºª at the door,º that he said,ºª Come in,ºª thou wifeº of Jeroboam;º why²² feignest thou thyself [to be] another?ºª² for I² [am] sentºª to² thee [with] heavyº [tidings]. 7 Go,¹ª² tellºª Jeroboam,º Thus² saithºª the LORDº Godº of Israel,º Forasmuch²² as¹ I exaltedºª thee from amongº² the people,º and madeºª thee princeº over² my peopleº Israel,º 8 And rentºª² the kingdomº away¹ª from the houseº² of David,º and gaveºª it thee: and [yet] thou hast not² been² as my servantº David,º who² keptºª my commandments,º and who² followedººª me with all² his heart,º to doºª [that] only² [which was] rightº in mine eyes;º 9 But hast doneºª evilºª above all²² that² were² beforeº thee: for thou hast gone¹ª² and madeºª thee otherº gods,º and molten images,º to provoke me to anger,ºª and hast castºª me behindº thy back:º 10 Therefore,² behold,² I will bringºª evilº upon² the houseº of Jeroboam,º and will cut offºª from Jeroboamº him that pissethºª against the wall,º [and] him that is shut upºª and leftºª in Israel,º and will take awayºª the remnantº of the houseº of Jeroboam,º as² a man taketh awayºª dung,º till² it be all gone.ºª 11 Him that diethºª of Jeroboamº in the cityº shall the dogsº eat;ºª and him that diethºª in the fieldº shall the fowlsº of the airº eat:ºª for² the LORDº hath spokenºª [it]. 12 Ariseºª thou² therefore, get¹ª² thee to thine own house:º [and] when thy feetº enterºª into the city,º the childº shall die.ºª 13 And all² Israelº shall mournºª for him, and buryºª him: for²² he only² of Jeroboamº shall comeºª to² the grave,º because² in him there is foundºª [some] goodº thingº toward² the LORDº Godº of Israelº in the houseº of Jeroboam.º 14 Moreover the LORDº shall raise him upºª a kingº over² Israel,º who² shall cut offºª² the houseº of Jeroboamº that² day:º but what?² even² now.² 15 For the LORDº shall smiteºª² Israel,º as² a reedº is shakenºª in the water,º and he shall root upºª² Israelº out of²² this² goodº land,º which² he gaveºª to their fathers,º and shall scatterºª them beyondº² the river,º because²² they have madeºª² their groves,º provoking the LORD¹ to anger.ºª²² 16 And he shall give¹ª Israel¹ upºª²² becauseº of the sinsº of Jeroboam,º who² did sin,ºª and who² made Israel¹ to sin.ºª²²

Abijah dieth, and is buried.

17 ¶ And Jeroboam'sº wifeº arose,ºª and departed,¹ª² and cameºª to Tirzah:º [and] when she² cameºª to the thresholdº of the door,º the childº died;ºª 18 And they buriedºª him; and all² Israelº mournedºª for him, according to the wordº of the LORD,º which² he spakeºª by the handº of his servantº Ahijahº the prophet.º

Nabab succeedeth Jeroboam.

19 And the restº of the actsº of Jeroboam,º how² he warred,ºª and how² he reigned,ºª behold,² they [are] writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Israel.º 20 And the daysº which² Jeroboamº reignedºª [were] twoº and twentyº years:º and he sleptºª with² his fathers,º and Nadabº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.²

Rehoboam's wicked reign.

21 ¶ And Rehoboamº the sonº of Solomonº reignedºª in Judah.º Rehoboamº [was] fortyº and oneº yearsº oldº when he began to reign,ºª and he reignedºª seventeenºº yearsº in Jerusalem,º the cityº which² the LORDº did chooseºª out of all²² the tribesº of Israel,º to putºª² his nameº there.² And his mother'sº nameº [was] Naamahº an Ammonitess.¹² 22 And Judahº didºª evilº in the sightº of the LORD,º and they provoked him to jealousyºª² with their sinsº which² they had committed,ºª above all²² that² their fathersº had done.ºª 23 For they² also² builtºª them high places,º and images,º and groves,º on² every² highº hill,º and under² every² greenº tree.º 24 And there were² also² sodomitesº in the land:º [and] they didºª according to all² the abominationsº of the nationsº which² the LORDº cast outºª beforeº² the childrenº of Israel.º

Shishak spoileth Jerusalem.

25 ¶ And it came to pass² in the fifthº yearº of kingº Rehoboam,º [that] Shishakº kingº of Egyptº came upºª against² Jerusalem:º 26 And he took awayºª² the treasuresº of the houseº of the LORD,º and the treasuresº of the king'sº house;º he even took awayºª all:² and he took awayºª² all² the shieldsº of goldº which² Solomonº had made.ºª 27 And kingº Rehoboamº madeºª in their stead² brasenº shields,º and committedºª [them] unto² the handsº of the chiefº of the guard,ºª which keptºª the doorº of the king'sº house.º 28 And it was² [so], whenº² the kingº wentºª into the houseº of the LORD,º that the guardºª bareºª them, and brought them backºª into² the guardºª chamber.º

Abijam succeedeth Rehoboam.

29 ¶ Now the restº of the actsº of Rehoboam,º and all² that² he did,ºª [are] they² not² writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Judah?º 30 And there was² warº between² Rehoboamº and Jeroboamº all² [their] days.º 31 And Rehoboamº sleptºª with² his fathers,º and was buriedºª with² his fathersº in the cityº of David.º And his mother'sº nameº [was] Naamahº an Ammonitess.¹² And Abijamº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.²
