In the extremity of famine Elijah, sent to Ahab, meeteth good Obadiah.

1 ¶ And it came to pass² [after] manyº days,º that the wordº of the LORDº came² to² Elijahº in the thirdº year,º saying,ºª Go,¹ª² shew¹ª thyself² unto² Ahab;º and I will sendºª rainº uponº² the earth.º 2 And Elijahº went¹ª² to shew¹ª himself² unto² Ahab.º And [there was] a soreº famineº in Samaria.º 3 And Ahabº calledºª² Obadiah,º which² [was] the governor² of [his] house.º (Now Obadiahº feared¹²²² the LORDº greatly:º 4 For it was² [so], when Jezebelº cut offºª² the prophetsº of the LORD,º that Obadiahº tookºª an hundredº prophets,º and hidºª them by fiftyºº in a cave,º and fedºª them with breadº and water.)º 5 And Ahabº saidºª unto² Obadiah,º Go¹ª² into the land,º unto² all² fountainsº of water,º and unto² all² brooks:º peradventureº we may findºª grassº to save¹ª the horses¹ and mules¹ alive,ºª²² that we loseºª not² all the beasts.º² 6 So they dividedºª² the landº between them to pass² throughout¹ª it: Ahabº wentºª oneº wayº by himself,² and Obadiahº wentºª anotherº wayº by himself.²

7 ¶ And as Obadiahº was² in the way,º behold,² Elijahº met¹ª² him: and he knewºª him, and fellºª on² his face,º and said,ºª [Art] thou² that² my lordº Elijah?º 8 And he answeredºª him, I² [am]: go,¹ª² tellºª thy lord,º Behold,² Elijahº [is here].

Obadiah bringeth Ahab to Elijah.

9 And he said,ºª What² have I sinned,ºª that² thou² wouldest deliverºª² thy servantº into the handº of Ahab,º to slayºª me? 10 [As] the LORDº thy Godº liveth,º there is² no¹² nationº or kingdom,º whitherº² my lordº hath not² sentºª to seekºª thee: and when they said,ºª [He is] not² [there]; he took an oathºª of² the kingdomº and nation,º that² they foundºª thee not.² 11 And now² thou² sayest,ºª Go,¹ª² tellºª thy lord,º Behold,² Elijahº [is here]. 12 And it shall come to pass,² [as soon as] I² am gone¹ª² from²² thee, that the Spiritº of the LORDº shall carryºª thee whither²² I knowºª not;² and [so] when I comeºª and tellºª Ahab,º and he cannot² findºª thee, he shall slayºª me: but I thy servantº fearºª² the LORDº from my youth.º² 13 Was it not² toldºª my lordº² what² I didºª when Jezebelº slewºª² the prophetsº of the LORD,º how I hidºª an hundredº menº of the LORD'S¹ prophetsº²² by fiftyº² in a cave,º and fedºª them with breadº and water?º 14 And now² thou² sayest,ºª Go,¹ª² tellºª thy lord,º Behold,² Elijahº [is here]: and he shall slayºª me. 15 And Elijahº said,ºª [As] the LORDº of hostsº liveth,º beforeº whom² I stand,ºª I will surely² shew¹ª myself² unto² him to day.º 16 So Obadiahº went¹ª² to meet¹ª² Ahab,º and toldºª him: and Ahabº went¹ª² to meet¹ª² Elijah.º

Elijah, reproving Ahab, by fire from heaven convinceth Baal's prophets.

17 ¶ And it came to pass,² when Ahabº sawºª² Elijah,º that Ahabº saidºª unto² him, [Art] thou² he that² troublethºª Israel?º 18 And he answered,ºª I have not² troubledºª² Israel;º but²² thou,² and thy father'sº house,º in that ye have forsakenºª² the commandmentsº of the LORD,º and thou hast followedº¹ª² Baalim.º 19 Now² therefore send,ºª [and] gatherºª to² me² all² Israelº unto² mountº Carmel,º and the prophetsº of Baalº fourº hundredº and fifty,º and the prophetsº of the grovesº fourº hundred,º which eatºª at Jezebel'sº table.º 20 So Ahabº sentºª unto all² the childrenº of Israel,º and gathered¹ª the prophets¹ togetherºª²² unto² mountº Carmel.º 21 And Elijahº cameºª unto² all² the people,º and said,ºª How long¹²² haltºª ye² between² twoº opinions?º if² the LORDº [be] God,º follow²² him: but if² Baal,º [then] followº¹ª² him. And the peopleº answeredºª him not² a word.º 22 Then saidºª Elijahº unto² the people,º I,² [even] I only,² remainºª a prophetº of the LORD;º but Baal'sº prophetsº [are] fourº hundredº and fiftyº men.º 23 Let them therefore giveºª us twoº bullocks;º and let them chooseºª oneº bullockº for themselves, and cut it in pieces,ºª and layºª [it] on² wood,º and putºª no² fireº [under]: and I² will dressºª² the otherº bullock,º and layºª [it] on² wood,º and putºª no² fireº [under]: 24 And callºª ye on the nameº of your gods,º and I² will callºª on the nameº of the LORD:º and the Godº that² answerethºª by fire,º let him² be² God.º And all² the peopleº answeredºª and said,ºª It is wellº spoken.º 25 And Elijahº saidºª unto the prophetsº of Baal,º Chooseºª you oneº bullockº for yourselves, and dressºª [it] first;º for² ye² [are] many;º and callºª on the nameº of your gods,º but putºª no² fireº [under]. 26 And they tookºª² the bullockº which² was givenºª them, and they dressedºª [it], and calledºª on the nameº of Baalº from morningº² even until² noon,º saying,ºª O Baal,º hearºª us. But [there was] noº voice,º nor² any that answered.ºª And they leapedºª upon² the altarº which² was made.ºª 27 And it came to pass² at noon,º that Elijahº mockedºª them, and said,ºª Cryºª aloud:ºº for² he² [is] a god;º either² he is talking,º or² he is pursuing,º or² he is in a journey,º [or] peradventureº he² sleepeth,º and must be awaked.ºª 28 And they criedºª aloud,ºº and cut¹ª themselves² after their mannerº with knivesº and lancets,º till² the bloodº gushed outºª upon² them. 29 And it came to pass,² when middayº was past,ºª and they prophesiedºª until² the [time] of the offeringºª of the [evening] sacrifice,º that [there was] neither² voice,º nor² any to answer,ºª nor² any that regarded.º 30 And Elijahº saidºª unto all² the people,º Come nearºª unto² me. And all² the peopleº came nearºª unto² him. And he repairedºª² the altarº of the LORDº [that was] broken down.ºª 31 And Elijahº tookºª twelveºº stones,º according to the numberº of the tribesº of the sonsº of Jacob,º unto² whom² the wordº of the LORDº came,² saying,ºª Israelº shall be² thy name:º 32 And with² the stonesº he builtºª an altarº in the nameº of the LORD:º and he madeºª a trenchº aboutº the altar,º as great as would containº two measuresº of seed.º 33 And he putºª² the woodº in order,¹ª and cutºª² the bullockº in pieces, and laidºª [him] on² the wood,º and said,ºª Fillºª fourº barrelsº with water,º and pourºª [it] on² the burnt sacrifice,º and on² the wood.º 34 And he said,ºª Do [it] the second time.ºª And they did [it] the second time.ºª And he said,ºª Do [it] the third time.ºª And they did [it] the third time.ºª 35 And the waterº ran¹ª² round aboutº the altar;º and he filledºª² the trenchº also² with water.º 36 And it came to pass² at [the time of] the offeringºª of the [evening] sacrifice,º that Elijahº the prophetº came near,ºª and said,ºª LORDº Godº of Abraham,º Isaac,º and of Israel,º let it be knownºª this dayº that² thou² [art] Godº in Israel,º and [that] I² [am] thy servant,º and [that] I have doneºª² all² these² things² at thy word.º 37 Hearºª me, O LORD,º hearºª me, that this² peopleº may knowºª that² thou² [art] the LORDº God,º and [that] thou² hast turnedºª² their heartº back¹ª again.º 38 Then the fireº of the LORDº fell,ºª and consumedºª² the burnt sacrifice,º and the wood,º and the stones,º and the dust,º and licked upºª the waterº that² [was] in the trench.º 39 And when all² the peopleº sawºª [it], they fellºª on² their faces:º and they said,ºª The LORD,º he² [is] the God;º the LORD,º he² [is] the God.º 40 And Elijahº saidºª unto them, Takeºª² the prophetsº of Baal;º let not² oneº of them² escape.ºª And they tookºª them: and Elijahº brought them downºª to² the brookº Kishon,º and slewºª them there.²

Elijah, by prayer obtaining rain, followeth Ahab to Jezreel.

41 ¶ And Elijahº saidºª unto Ahab,º Get thee up,ºª eatºª and drink;ºª for² [there is] a soundº of abundanceº of rain.º 42 So Ahabº went upºª to eatºª and to drink.ºª And Elijahº went upºª to² the topº of Carmel;º and he cast himself downºª upon the earth,º and putºª his faceº between² his knees,º 43 And saidºª to² his servant,º Go upºª now,² lookºª towardº the sea.º And he went up,ºª and looked,ºª and said,ºª [There is] nothing.º² And he said,ºª Go againºª sevenº times.º 44 And it came to pass² at the seventh time,º that he said,ºª Behold,² there arisethºª a littleº cloudº out of the sea,º² like a man'sº hand.º And he said,ºª Go up,ºª sayºª unto² Ahab,º Prepareºª [thy chariot], and get thee down,ºª that the rainº stopºª thee not.² 45 And it came to pass² in the mean while,ºº that the heavenº was blackºª with cloudsº and wind,º and there was² a greatº rain.º And Ahabº rode,ºª and went¹ª² to Jezreel.º 46 And the handº of the LORDº was² on² Elijah;º and he girded upºª his loins,º and ranºª beforeº Ahabº to² the entranceºª of Jezreel.º
