Abraham’s Treachery

1 Now Abraham° journeyed° from athere° toward the land° of bthe INegev°, and IIsettled° between° Kadesh° and Shur°; then he sojourned° in cGerar°. 2 Abraham° said° of Sarah° his wife°, “aShe is my sister°.” So bAbimelech° king° of Gerar° sent° and took° Sarah°. 3 aBut God° came° to Abimelech° in a dream° of the night°, and said° to him, “Behold°, byou are a dead° man because° of the woman° whom° you have taken°, for she is Imarried°°.” 4 Now Abimelech° had not come° near° her; and he said°, “Lord°, awill You slay° a nation°, even° [though] Iblameless°? 5 Did he not himself° say° to me, ‘She is my sister°’? And she aherself° said°, ‘He is my brother°.’ In bthe integrity° of my heart° and the innocence° of my Ihands° I have done° this°.” 6 Then God° said° to him in the dream°, “Yes°, I know° that in the integrity° of your heart° you have done° this°, and I also° Iakept° you from sinning° against Me; therefore°° I did not let° you touch° her. 7 Now° therefore, restore° the man’s° wife°, for ahe is a prophet°, and he will pray° for you and you will live°. But if° you do not restore° [her], know° that you shall surely° die°, you and all° who° are yours.”

8 ¶ So Abimelech° arose° early° in the morning° and called° all° his servants° and told° all° these° things° in their hearing°; and the men° were greatly° frightened°. 9 aThen Abimelech° called° Abraham° and said° to him, “What° have you done° to us? And Ihow° have I sinned° against you, that you have brought° on me and on my kingdom° ba great° sin°? You have done° to me IIthings° that ought not to be done°.” 10 And Abimelech° said° to Abraham°, “What° have you Iencountered°, that you have done° this° thing°?” 11 Abraham° said°, “Because° I thought°, surely° there° is no° afear° of God° in this° place°, and bthey will kill° me because°° of my wife°. 12 Besides°, she actually° is my sister°, the daughter° of my father°, but not the daughter° of my mother°, and she became° my wife°; 13 and it came° about, when° aGod° caused me to wander° from my father’s° house°, that I said° to her, ‘This° is Ithe kindness° which° you will show° to me: IIeverywhere°°°°° we go°, bsay° of me, “He is my brother°.”’” 14 aAbimelech° then took° sheep° and oxen° and male° and female° servants°°, and gave° them to Abraham°, and restored° his wife° Sarah° to him. 15 Abimelech° said°, “aBehold°, my land° is before° you; Isettle° wherever IIyou please°°.” 16 To Sarah° he said°, “Behold°, I have given° your abrother° a thousand° pieces of silver°; behold°, it is Iyour vindication° before all° who° are with you, and before° all° men° you are cleared°.” 17 aAbraham° prayed° to God°, and God° healed° Abimelech° and his wife° and his maids°, so that they bore° [children]. 18 aFor the LORD° had closed° fast° all° the wombs° of the household° of Abimelech° because°° of Sarah°, Abraham’s° wife°.

denieth his wife, and loseth her.

Abimelech is reproved for her in a dream.

3 But Godº cameºª to² Abimelechº in a dreamº by night,º and saidºª to him, Behold,² thou [art but] a dead man,ºª for² the womanº which² thou hast taken;ºª for she² [is] a man'sº wife.ºª 4 But Abimelechº had not² come nearºª² her: and he said,ºª Lord,º wilt thou slayºª also² a righteousº nation?º 5 Saidºª he² not² unto me, Sheº [is] my sister?º and she,º evenº she¹ herself² said,ºª He² [is] my brother:º in the integrityº of my heartº and innocencyº of my handsº have I doneºª this.² 6 And Godº saidºª unto² him in a dream,º Yea,º I² knowºª that² thou didstºª this² in the integrityº of thy heart;º for I² also² withheldºª thee from sinningºª² against me: therefore²² sufferedºª I thee not² to touchºª² her. 7 Now² therefore restoreºª the manº [his] wife;º for² he² [is] a prophet,º and he shall prayºª for² thee,¹ and thou shalt live:ºª and if² thou restoreºª [her] not,² knowºª thou that² thou shalt surely¹ª die,ºª thou,² and all² that² [are] thine. 8 Therefore Abimelechº rose earlyºª in the morning,º and calledºª all² his servants,º and toldºª² all² these² thingsº in their ears:º and the men¹² were sore¹ afraid.ºª²

He rebuketh Abraham,

9 Then Abimelechº calledºª Abraham,º and saidºª unto him, What² hast thou doneºª unto us? and what² have I offendedºª thee, that² thou hast broughtºª on² me and on² my kingdomº a greatº sin?º thou hast doneºª deedsº unto² me that² ought not² to be done.ºª 10 And Abimelechº saidºª unto² Abraham,º Whatº sawest² thou,¹ª that² thou hast doneºª² this² thing?º 11 And Abrahamº said,ºª Because² I thought,ºª Surelyº the fearº of Godº [is] not² in this² place;º and they will slay² me¹ª for² my wife'sº sake.º 12 And yet² indeedº [she is] my sister;º she² [is] the daughterº of my father,º but² not² the daughterº of my mother;º and she became² my wife.º 13 And it came to pass,² when² Godº caused me to wanderºª from my father's¹ house,º²² that I saidºª unto her, This² [is] thy kindnessº which² thou shalt shewºª unto² me; at² every² placeº whither²² we shall come,ºª sayºª of me, He² [is] my brother.º

restoreth Sarah,

14 And Abimelechº tookºª sheep,º and oxen,º and menservants,º and womenservants,º and gaveºª [them] unto Abraham,º and restoredºª him² Sarahº his wife.º 15 And Abimelechº said,ºª Behold,² my landº [is] before² thee:¹ dwellºª where it pleasethºº thee.

and reproveth her.

16 And unto Sarahº he said,ºª Behold,² I have givenºª thy brotherº a thousandº [pieces] of silver:º behold,² he² [is] to thee a coveringº of the eyes,º unto all² that² [are] with² thee, and with² all² [other]: thus she was reproved.ºª

He is healed by Abraham's prayer.
