NASB — Proverbs 15 — KJV

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

  1 A agentle° answer° turns° away° wrath°,
  But a Ibharsh° word° stirs° up anger°.
  2 The atongue° of the wise° makes° knowledge° Iacceptable°,
  But the bmouth° of fools° spouts° folly°.
  3 The aeyes° of the LORD° are in every° place°,
  Watching° the evil° and the good°.
  4 A Isoothing° tongue° is a tree° of life°,
  But perversion° in it IIcrushes° the spirit°.
  5 A fool° Irejects° his father’s° discipline°,
  But he who regards° reproof° is sensible°.
  6 Great° wealth° is [in] the house° of the arighteous°,
But trouble° is in the income° of the wicked°.
  7 The lips° of the wise° spread° knowledge°,
But the hearts° of fools° are not so°.
  8 The asacrifice° of the wicked° is an abomination° to the LORD°,
But bthe prayer° of the upright° is His delight°.
  9 The way° of the wicked° is an abomination° to the LORD°,
  But He loves° one who apursues° righteousness°.
  10 Grievous° punishment° is for him who forsakes° the way°;
  He who hates° reproof° will die°.
  11 IaSheol° and IIAbaddon° [lie open] before° the LORD°,
  How° much°° more° the bhearts° of IIImen°°!
  12 A ascoffer° does not love° one who reproves° him,
He will not go° to the wise°.
  13 A ajoyful° heart° makes° a Icheerful° face°,
But IIwhen the heart° is bsad°, the cspirit° is broken°.
  14 The amind° of the intelligent° seeks° knowledge°,
  But the mouth° of fools° feeds° on folly°.
  15 All° the days° of the afflicted° are bad°,
  But a Icheerful° heart° [has] a continual° feast°.
  16 aBetter° is a little° with the Ifear° of the LORD°
  Than° great° treasure° and turmoil° with it.
  17 aBetter° is a Idish° of IIvegetables° where° love° is
  Than° a bfattened° ox° [served] with hatred°.
  18 A ahot-tempered° man° stirs° up strife°,
  But the bslow° to anger° ccalms° a dispute°.
  19 The way° of the lazy° is as a hedge° of thorns°,
  But the path° of the upright° is a highway°.
  20 A awise° son° makes° a father° glad°,
  But a foolish° man° bdespises° his mother°.
  21 Folly° is joy° to him who° lacks° Isense°,
  But a man° of understanding° awalks° straight°.
  22 Without° consultation°, plans° are frustrated°,
  But with many° counselors° they Isucceed°.
  23 A aman° has joy° in an Iapt° answer°,
  And how° delightful° is a timely° bword°!
  24 The apath° of life° [leads] upward° for the wise°
  That he may keep° away° from ISheol° below°.
  25 The LORD° will atear° down° the house° of the proud°,
But He will bestablish° the boundary° of the cwidow°.
  26 Evil° plans° are an abomination° to the LORD°,
  But pleasant° words° are pure°.
  27 He who aprofits° illicitly° troubles° his own house°,
  But he who bhates° bribes° will live°.
  28 The heart° of the righteous° aponders° how to answer°,
  But the bmouth° of the wicked° pours° out evil° things°.
  29 The LORD° is afar° from the wicked°,
But He bhears° the prayer° of the righteous°.
  30 IBright° eyes° gladden° the heart°;
  Good° news° puts° fat° on the bones°.
  31 He whose ear° listens° to the life-giving° reproof°
  Will dwell° among° the wise°.
  32 He who aneglects° discipline° bdespises° himself°,
  But he who clistens° to reproof° acquires° Iunderstanding°.
  33 The Ifear° of the LORD° is the instruction° for wisdom°,
  And before° honor° [comes] humility°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ A softº answerº turneth¹ª away² wrath:º but grievousº wordsº stir upºª anger.º 2 The tongueº of the wiseº useth knowledgeº aright:ºª but the mouthº of foolsº poureth outºª foolishness.º 3 The eyesº of the LORDº [are] in every² place,º beholdingºª the evilº and the good.º 4 A wholesomeº tongueº [is] a treeº of life:º but perversenessº therein [is] a breachº in the spirit.º 5 A foolº despisethºª his father'sº instruction:º but he that regardethºª reproofº is prudent.ºª 6 In the houseº of the righteousº [is] muchº treasure:º but in the revenuesº of the wickedº is trouble.ºª 7 The lipsº of the wiseº disperseºª knowledge:º but the heartº of the foolishº [doeth] not² so.² 8 The sacrificeº of the wickedº [is] an abominationº to the LORD:º but the prayerº of the uprightº [is] his delight.º 9 The wayº of the wickedº [is] an abominationº unto the LORD:º but he lovethºª him that followeth¹ª after² righteousness.º 10 Correctionº [is] grievousº unto him that forsakethºª the way:º [and] he that hatethºª reproofº shall die.ºª 11 Hellº and destructionº [are] before² the LORD:º how much more then²² the heartsº of the childrenº of men?º 12 A scornerºª lovethºª not² one that reprovethºª him: neither² will he go¹ª² unto² the wise.º 13 A merryº heartº maketh a cheerfulºª countenance:º but by sorrowº of the heartº the spiritº is broken.º 14 The heartº of him that hath understandingºª seekethºª knowledge:º but the mouthºª¹ of foolsº feedeth¹ª on² foolishness.º 15 All² the daysº of the afflictedº [are] evil:º but he that is of a merryº heartº [hath] a continualº feast.º 16 Betterº [is] littleº with the fearº of the LORDº than greatº treasureº² and troubleº therewith. 17 Betterº [is] a dinnerº of herbsº where² loveº is, than a stalledºª oxº² and hatredº therewith. 18 A wrathfulº manº stirreth upºª strife:º but [he that is] slowº to angerº appeasethºª strife.º 19 The wayº of the slothfulº [man is] as an hedgeº of thorns:º but the wayº of the righteousº [is] made plain.ºª 20 A wiseº sonº maketh a gladºª father:º but a foolishº manº despisethºª his mother.º 21 Follyº [is] joyº to [him that is] destituteº of wisdom:º but a manº of understandingº walketh¹ª² uprightly.ºª 22 Without² counselº purposesº are disappointed:ºª but in the multitudeº of counsellorsºª they are established.ºª 23 A manº hath joyº by the answerº of his mouth:º and a wordº [spoken] in due season,º how² goodº [is it]! 24 The wayº of lifeº [is] aboveº to the wise,ºª that² he may departºª from hellº² beneath.º 25 The LORDº will destroyºª the houseº of the proud:º but he will establishºª the borderº of the widow.º 26 The thoughtsº of the wickedº [are] an abominationº to the LORD:º but [the words] of the pureº [are] pleasantº words.º 27 He that is greedyºª of gainº troublethºª his own house;º but he that hatethºª giftsº shall live.ºª 28 The heartº of the righteousº studiethºª to answer:ºª but the mouthº of the wickedº poureth¹ª out² evil things.º 29 The LORDº [is] farº from the wicked:º² but he hearethºª the prayerº of the righteous.º 30 The lightº of the eyesº rejoicethºª the heart:º [and] a goodº reportº maketh¹ª the bonesº fat.ºª 31 The earº that hearethºª the reproofº of lifeº abidethºª amongº the wise.º 32 He that refusethºª instructionº despisethºª his own soul:º but he that hearethºª reproofº gettethºª understanding.º 33 The fearº of the LORDº [is] the instructionº of wisdom;º and beforeº honourº [is] humility.º
