Jeremiah, being imprisoned by Zedekiah for his prophecy,

1 ¶ The wordº that² came² to² Jeremiahº from²² the LORDº in the tenthº yearº of Zedekiahº kingº of Judah,º which² [was] the eighteenthºº¹ yearº of Nebuchadrezzar.º 2 For then² the kingº of Babylon'sº armyº besiegedºª² Jerusalem:º and Jeremiahº the prophetº was² shut upºª in the courtº of the prison,º which² [was] in the kingº of Judah'sº house.º 3 For² Zedekiahº kingº of Judahº had shut him up,ºª saying,ºª Wherefore² dost thou² prophesy,ºª and say,ºª Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Behold,² I will giveºª² this² cityº into the handº of the kingº of Babylon,º and he shall takeºª it; 4 And Zedekiahº kingº of Judahº shall not² escapeºª out of the handº² of the Chaldeans,º but² shall surely¹ª be deliveredºª into the handº of the kingº of Babylon,º and shall speakºª with² him mouthº to mouth,º and his eyesº shall beholdºª² his eyes;º 5 And he shall lead¹ª²² Zedekiahº to Babylon,º and there² shall he be² until² I visitºª him, saithºª the LORD:º though² ye fightºª with² the Chaldeans,º ye shall not² prosper.ºª

buyeth Hanameel's field.

6 ¶ And Jeremiahº said,ºª The wordº of the LORDº came² unto² me, saying,ºª 7 Behold,² Hanameelº the sonº of Shallumº thine uncleº shall comeºª unto² thee, saying,ºª Buyºª thee² my fieldº that² [is] in Anathoth:º for² the rightº of redemptionº [is] thine to buyºª [it]. 8 So Hanameelº mine uncle'sº sonº cameºª to² me in² the courtº of the prisonº according to the wordº of the LORD,º and saidºª unto² me, Buyºª² my field,º I pray thee,² that² [is] in Anathoth,º which² [is] in the countryº of Benjamin:º for² the rightº of inheritanceº [is] thine, and the redemptionº [is] thine; buyºª [it] for thyself. Then I knewºª that² this² [was] the wordº of the LORD.º 9 And I boughtºª² the fieldº of²² Hanameelº my uncle'sº son,º that² [was] in Anathoth,º and weighedºª him² the money,º [even] seventeenº¹² shekelsº of silver.º 10 And I subscribedºª the evidence,º and sealedºª [it], and tookºª witnesses,º and weighedºª [him] the moneyº in the balances.º 11 So I tookºª² the evidenceº of the purchase,º [both]² that which was sealedºª [according] to the lawº and custom,º and that which was open:ºª

Baruch must preserve the evidences, as tokens of the people's return.

12 And I gaveºª² the evidenceº of the purchaseº unto² Baruchº the sonº of Neriah,º the sonº of Maaseiah,º in the sightº of Hanameelº mine uncle'sº [son], and in the presenceº of the witnessesº that subscribedºª the bookº of the purchase,º beforeº all² the Jewsº that satºª in the courtº of the prison.º

13 ¶ And I chargedºª² Baruchº beforeº them, saying,ºª 14 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Takeºª² these² evidences,º² this² evidenceº of the purchase,º both which is sealed,ºª and this² evidenceº which is open;ºª and putºª them in an earthenº vessel,º that² they may continueºª manyº days.º 15 For² thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Housesº and fieldsº and vineyardsº shall be possessed² again¹ª² in this² land.º

Jeremiah in his prayer complaineth to God.

16 ¶ Now whenº I had deliveredºª² the evidenceº of the purchaseº unto² Baruchº the sonº of Neriah,º I prayedºª unto² the LORD,º saying,ºª 17 Ahº Lordº GOD!º behold,² thou² hast madeºª² the heavenº and the earthº by thy greatº powerº and stretched outºª arm,º [and] there is nothingº²² too hardºª for² thee: 18 Thou shewestºª lovingkindnessº unto thousands,º and recompensestºª the iniquityº of the fathersº into² the bosomº of their childrenº afterº them: the Great,º the Mightyº God,º the LORDº of hosts,º [is] his name,º 19 Greatº in counsel,º and mightyº in work:º for² thine eyesº [are] openºª upon² all² the waysº of the sonsº of men:º to giveºª every oneº according to his ways,º and according to the fruitº of his doings:º 20 Which² hast setºª signsº and wondersº in the landº of Egypt,º [even] unto² this² day,º and in Israel,º and among [other] men;º and hast madeºª thee a name,º as at this² day;º 21 And hast brought forthºª² thy peopleº² Israelº out of the landº² of Egyptº with signs,º and with wonders,º and with a strongº hand,º and with a stretched outºª arm,º and with greatº terror;º 22 And hast givenºª them² this² land,º which² thou didst swearºª to their fathersº to giveºª them, a landº flowingºª with milkº and honey;º 23 And they came² in,¹ª and possessedºª it; but they obeyedºª not² thy voice,º neither² walkedºª in thy law;º they have doneºª² nothing² of all² that² thou commandedstºª them to do:ºª therefore thou hast caused² all² this² evilº to come¹ª upon² them: 24 Behold² the mounts,º they are comeºª unto the cityº to takeºª it; and the cityº is givenºª into the handº of the Chaldeans,º that fightºª against² it, becauseº² of the sword,º and of the famine,º and of the pestilence:º and what² thou hast spokenºª is come to pass;² and, behold,² thou seestºª [it]. 25 And thou² hast saidºª unto² me, O Lordº GOD,º Buyºª thee the fieldº for money,º and takeºª witnesses;º for the cityº is givenºª into the handº of the Chaldeans.º

God confirmeth the captivity for their sins,

26 ¶ Then came² the wordº of the LORDº unto² Jeremiah,º saying,ºª 27 Behold,² I² [am] the LORD,º the Godº of all² flesh:º is there any² thingº too hardºª for² me? 28 Therefore² thus² saithºª the LORD;º Behold,² I will giveºª² this² cityº into the handº of the Chaldeans,º and into the handº of Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylon,º and he shall takeºª it: 29 And the Chaldeans,º that fightºª against² this² city,º shall comeºª and setºª fireº on² this² city,º and burnºª it with the houses,º upon² whose² roofsº they have offered incenseºª unto Baal,º and poured outºª drink offeringsº unto otherº gods,º to² provoke me to anger.ºª 30 For² the childrenº of Israelº and the childrenº of Judahº have² only² doneºª evilº beforeº me from their youth:º² for² the childrenº of Israelº have only² provoked me to angerºª² with the workº of their hands,º saithºª the LORD.º 31 For²² this² cityº hath been² to me [as] a provocation² of mine angerº and of² my furyº from² the dayº that² they builtºª it even unto² this² day;º that I should removeºª it from before²² my face,º 32 Because² of all² the evilº of the childrenº of Israelº and of the childrenº of Judah,º which² they have doneºª to provoke me to anger,ºª they,² their kings,º their princes,º their priests,º and their prophets,º and the menº of Judah,º and the inhabitantsºª of Jerusalem.º 33 And they have turnedºª unto² me the back,º and not² the face:º though I taughtºª them, rising up earlyºª and teachingºª [them], yet they have not² hearkenedºª to receiveºª instruction.º 34 But they setºª their abominationsº in the house,º which² is calledºª by² my name,º to defileºª it. 35 And they builtºª² the high placesº of Baal,º which² [are] in the valleyº of the sonº of Hinnom,º to cause² their sonsº and their daughtersº to pass¹ª through² [the fire] unto Molech;º which² I commandedºª them not,² neither² cameºª it into² my mind,º that they should doºª this² abomination,º to² cause² Judahº to sin.ºª

and promiseth a gracious return.

36 ¶ And now² therefore² thus² saithºª the LORD,º the Godº of Israel,º concerning² this² city,º whereof² ye² say,ºª It shall be deliveredºª into the handº of the kingº of Babylonº by the sword,º and by the famine,º and by the pestilence;º 37 Behold,² I will gather² them out¹ª of all²² countries,º whither²² I have drivenºª them in mine anger,º and in my fury,º and in greatº wrath;º and I will bring them againºª unto² this² place,º and I will cause them to dwellºª safely:º 38 And they shall be² my people,º and I² will be² their God:º 39 And I will giveºª them oneº heart,º and oneº way,º that they may fearºª me for ever,º² for the goodº of them, and of their childrenº afterº them: 40 And I will makeºª an everlastingº covenantº with them, that² I will not² turn awayºª from²² them,¹ to do them good;ºª² but I will putºª my fearº in their hearts,º that they shall not² departºª from²² me. 41 Yea, I will rejoiceºª over² them to do them good,ºª² and I will plantºª them in this² landº assuredlyº with my whole² heartº and with my whole² soul.º 42 For² thus² saithºª the LORD;º Like as² I have broughtºª² all² this² greatº evilº upon² this² people,º so² will I² bringºª upon² them² all² the goodº that² I² have promisedºª² them. 43 And fieldsº shall be boughtºª in this² land,º whereof² ye² say,ºª [It² is] desolateº without²² manº or beast;º it is givenºª into the handº of the Chaldeans.º 44 Men shall buyºª fieldsº for money,º and subscribeºª evidences,º and sealºª [them], and takeºª witnessesº in the landº of Benjamin,º and in the places aboutº Jerusalem,º and in the citiesº of Judah,º and in the citiesº of the mountains,º and in the citiesº of the valley,º and in the citiesº of the south:º for² I will cause² their captivityº to return,ºª saithºª the LORD.º
