Moses' speech in the end of the fortieth year, briefly rehearsing the story,

1 ¶ These² [be] the wordsº which² Mosesº spakeºª unto² all² Israelº on this sideº Jordanº in the wilderness,º in the plainº over againstº the Redº [sea], between² Paran,º and Tophel,º and Laban,º and Hazeroth,º and Dizahab.º 2 ([There are] elevenºº days'º [journey] from Horebº² by the wayº of mountº Seirº unto² Kadeshbarnea.)º 3 And it came to pass² in the fortiethº year,º in the eleventhºº month,º on the firstº [day] of the month,º [that] Mosesº spakeºª unto² the childrenº of Israel,º according unto all² that² the LORDº had given him in commandmentºª² unto² them; 4 Afterº he had slainºª² Sihonº the kingº of the Amorites,º which² dweltºª in Heshbon,º and Ogº the kingº of Bashan,º which² dweltºª at Astarothº in Edrei:º 5 On this sideº Jordan,º in the landº of Moab,º beganºª Mosesº to declareºª² this² law,º saying,ºª

of God's promise,

6 The LORDº our Godº spakeºª unto² us in Horeb,º saying,ºª Ye have dweltºª long enoughº in this² mount:º 7 Turnºª you, and take your journey,ºª and goºª to the mountº of the Amorites,º and unto² all² [the places] nighº thereunto, in the plain,º in the hills,º and in the vale,º and in the south,º and by the seaº side,º to the landº of the Canaanites,º and unto Lebanon,º unto² the greatº river,º the riverº Euphrates.º 8 Behold,ºª I have setºª² the landº beforeº you: go¹ª in² and possessºª² the landº which² the LORDº swareºª unto your fathers,º Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob,º to giveºª unto them and to their seedº afterº them.

9 ¶ And I spakeºª unto² you at that² time,º saying,ºª I am not ableºª² to bearºª you myself alone:º 10 The LORDº your Godº hath multipliedºª you, and, behold,² ye [are] this dayº as the starsº of heavenº for multitude.º 11 (The LORDº Godº of your fathersº make you a thousandº timesº so many more² as¹ª ye [are], and blessºª you, as² he hath promisedºª you!) 12 Howº can I myself alone² bearºª your cumbrance,º and your burden,º and your strife?º

giving them officers,

13 Takeºª you wiseº men,¹² and understanding,ºª and knownºª among your tribes,º and I will makeºª them rulersº over you. 14 And ye answeredºª me, and said,ºª The thingº which² thou hast spokenºª [is] goodº [for us] to do.ºª 15 So I tookºª² the chiefº of your tribes,º wiseº men,¹² and known,ºª and madeºª them headsº over² you, captainsº over thousands,º and captainsº over hundreds,º and captainsº over fifties,º and captainsº over tens,º and officersºª among your tribes.º 16 And I chargedºª² your judgesºª at that² time,º saying,ºª Hearºª [the causes] between² your brethren,º and judgeºª righteouslyº between² [every] manº and his brother,º and the strangerº [that is] with him. 17 Ye shall not² respectºª personsº in judgment;º [but] ye shall hearºª the smallº as well as the great;º ye shall not² be afraidºª of the faceº² of man;º for² the judgmentº [is] God's:º and the causeº that² is too hardºª for² you, bringºª [it] unto² me, and I will hearºª it. 18 And I commandedºª you at that² timeº² all² the thingsº which² ye should do.ºª

of sending the spies to search the land,

19 ¶ And when we departedºª from Horeb,º² we went through¹ª²² all² that² greatº and terribleºª wilderness,º which² ye sawºª by the wayº of the mountainº of the Amorites,º as² the LORDº our Godº commandedºª us; and we cameºª to² Kadeshbarnea.º 20 And I saidºª unto² you, Ye are comeºª unto² the mountainº of the Amorites,º which² the LORDº our Godº doth giveºª unto us. 21 Behold,ºª the LORDº thy Godº hath setºª² the landº beforeº thee: go upºª [and] possessºª [it], as² the LORDº Godº of thy fathersº hath saidºª unto thee; fearºª not,² neither² be discouraged.ºª

22 ¶ And ye came nearºª unto² me every one² of you, and said,ºª We will sendºª men¹² beforeº us, and they shall search us outºª² the land,º and bringºª us wordº again¹ª² by what² wayº we must go up,ºª and² into² what² citiesº we shall come.ºª 23 And the sayingº pleased me well:ººª and I tookºª twelveºº men¹² of² you, oneº of a tribe:º¹ 24 And they turnedºª and went upºª into the mountain,º and cameºª unto² the valleyº of Eshcol,º and searched it out.ºª² 25 And they tookºª of the fruitº² of the landº in their hands,º and brought [it] downºª unto² us, and broughtºª us wordº again,¹ª and said,ºª [It is] a goodº landº which² the LORDº our Godº doth giveºª us. 26 Notwithstanding ye wouldºª not² go up,ºª but rebelled¹ª against²² the commandmentº of the LORDº your God:º 27 And ye murmuredºª in your tents,º and said,ºª Because the LORDº hatedº us, he hath brought us forthºª out of the landº² of Egypt,º to deliverºª us into the handº of the Amorites,º to destroyºª us. 28 Whither² shall we² go up?ºª our brethrenº have discouragedºª² our heart,º saying,ºª The peopleº [is] greaterº and tallerºª than² we; the citiesº [are] greatº and walled² up¹ª to heaven;º and moreover² we have seenºª the sonsº of the Anakimsº there.² 29 Then I saidºª unto² you, Dreadºª not,² neither² be afraidºª of² them. 30 The LORDº your Godº which goethºª beforeº you, he² shall fightºª for you, according to all² that² he didºª for² you in Egyptº before your eyes;º 31 And in the wilderness,º where² thou hast seenºª how that² the LORDº thy Godº bareºª thee, as² a manº doth bearºª² his son,º in all² the wayº that² ye went,ºª until² ye cameºª into² this² place.º 32 Yet in this² thingº ye did not² believeºª the LORDº your God,º 33 Who wentºª in the wayº beforeº you, to search you outºª a placeº to pitch your tentsºª [in], in fireº by night,º to shewºª you by what² wayº ye should go,¹ª² and in a cloudº by day.º

of God's anger for their incredulity,

34 And the LORDº heardºª² the voiceº of your words,º and was wroth,ºª and sware,ºª saying,ºª 35 Surely² there shall not oneº of these² men¹² of this² evilº generationº seeºª² that goodº land,º which² I swareºª to giveºª unto your fathers,º 36 Saveº Calebº the sonº of Jephunneh;º he² shall seeºª it, and to him will I giveºª² the landº thatº he hath trodden² upon,¹ª and to his children,º because²² he hath whollyºª followedº the LORD.º 37 Also² the LORDº was angryºª with me for your sakes,º saying,ºª Thou² also² shalt not² go¹ª in² thither.º 38 [But] Joshuaº the sonº of Nun,º which standethºª beforeº thee, he² shall go inºª thither:² encourageºª him: for² he² shall cause² Israelº to inheritºª it. 39 Moreover your little ones,º which² ye saidºª should be² a prey,º and your children,º which² in that dayº had no knowledgeºª² between goodº and evil,º they² shall go inºª thither,² and unto them will I giveºª it, and they² shall possessºª it. 40 But [as for] you,² turnºª you, and take your journeyºª into the wildernessº by the wayº of the Redº sea.º

41 Then ye answeredºª and saidºª unto² me, We have sinnedºª against the LORD,º we² will go upºª and fight,ºª according to all² that² the LORDº our Godº commandedºª us. And when ye had girded¹ª on² every manº² his weaponsº of war,º ye were readyºª to go upºª into the hill.º 42 And the LORDº saidºª unto² me, Sayºª unto them, Go not up,ºª² neither² fight;ºª for² I [am] not² amongº you; lest² ye be smittenºª beforeº your enemies.ºª 43 So I spakeºª unto² you; and ye would not² hear,ºª but rebelled¹ª against²² the commandmentº of the LORD,º and went¹ª presumptuously¹ª upºª² into the hill.º 44 And the Amorites,º which dweltºª in that² mountain,º came outºª againstºª you, and chasedºª you, as² beesº do,ºª and destroyedºª you in Seir,º [even] unto² Hormah.º 45 And ye returnedºª and weptºª beforeº the LORD;º but the LORDº would not² hearkenºª to your voice,º nor² give earºª unto² you. 46 So ye abodeºª in Kadeshº manyº days,º according unto the daysº that² ye abodeºª [there].
