Rahab receiveth and concealeth the two spies sent from Shittim.

1 ¶ And Joshuaº the sonº of Nunº sentºª out of² Shittimº twoº men¹² to spyºª secretly,º saying,ºª Go¹ª² viewºª² the land,º even Jericho.º And they went,¹ª² and came¹ª into² an harlot'sºª² house,º¹ namedº Rahab,º and lodgedºª there.² 2 And it was toldºª the kingº of Jericho,º saying,ºª Behold,² there cameºª men¹² in hither² to nightº of the childrenº² of Israelº to search outºª² the country.º 3 And the kingº of Jerichoº sentºª unto² Rahab,º saying,ºª Bring forthºª the men¹² that are comeºª to² thee, which² are enteredºª into thine house:º for² they be comeºª to search outºª² all² the country.º 4 And the womanº tookºª² the twoº men,¹² and hidºª them, and saidºª thus,² There cameºª men¹² unto² me, but I wistºª not² whenceº² they² [were]: 5 And it came to pass² [about the time] of shuttingºª of the gate,º when it was dark,º that the men¹² went out:ºª whither² the men¹² wentºª I wotºª not:² pursueºª afterº them quickly;º for² ye shall overtakeºª them. 6 But she² had brought them upºª to the roofº of the house, and hidºª them with the stalksº of flax,º which she had laid in orderºª upon² the roof.º 7 And the men¹² pursuedºª afterº them the wayº to Jordanº unto² the fords:º and as soon as²² they which pursuedºª afterº them were gone out,ºª they shutºª the gate.º

8 ¶ And before² they² were laid down,ºª she² came upºª unto² them upon² the roof;º 9 And she saidºª unto² the men,¹² I knowºª that² the LORDº hath givenºª you² the land,º and that² your terrorº is fallenºª upon² us, and that² all² the inhabitantsºª of the landº faintºª because¹ of²² you. 10 For² we have heardºª² how² the LORDº dried upºª² the waterº of the Redº seaº for²² you,¹ when ye came outºª of Egypt;º² and what² ye didºª unto the twoº kingsº of the Amorites,º that² [were] on the other sideº Jordan,º Sihonº and Og,º whom² ye utterly destroyed.ºª² 11 And as soon as we had heardºª [these things], our heartsº did melt,ºª neither² did there remainºª any more² courageº in any man,º because¹ of²² you: for² the LORDº your God,º he² [is] Godº in heavenº above,º² and in² earthº beneath.²² 12 Now² therefore, I pray² you, swearºª unto me by the LORD,º sinceº I have shewed¹ª you kindness,º²² that ye² will also² shewºª kindnessº unto² my father'sº house,º and giveºª me a trueº token:º 13 And [that] ye will save aliveºª² my father,º and my mother,º and my brethren,º and my sisters,º and all² that² they have, and deliverºª² our livesº from death.º² 14 And the men¹² answeredºª her, Our lifeº for² yours,¹ª if² ye utterºª not²² this² our business.º And it shall be,² when the LORDº hath givenºª us² the land,º that we will dealºª kindlyº and trulyº with² thee. 15 Then she let them downºª by a cordº throughº the window:º for² her houseº [was] upon the town¹² wall,¹² and she² dweltºª upon the wall.º 16 And she saidºª unto them, Get¹ª² you to the mountain,º lest² the pursuersºª meetºª you; and hide¹ª yourselves² there² threeº days,º until² the pursuersºª be returned:ºª and afterwardº may ye go¹ª² your way.º 17 And the men¹² saidºª unto² her, We² [will be] blamelessº of this thine oathº²² which² thou hast made us swear.ºª 18 Behold,² [when] we² comeºª into the land,º thou shalt bindºª² this² lineº of scarletº threadº in the windowº which² thou didst let us down² by:¹ª and thou shalt bringºª thy father,º and thy mother,º and thy brethren,º and all² thy father'sº household,º homeº unto² thee. 19 And it shall be,² [that] whosoeverº² shall go outºª of the doorsº² of thy houseº into the street,º his bloodº [shall be] upon his head,º and we² [will be] guiltless:º and whosoever²² shall be² with² thee in the house,º his bloodº [shall be] on our head,º if² [any] handº be² upon him. 20 And if² thou utterºª² this² our business,º then we will be² quitº of thine oathº² which² thou hast made us to swear.ºª 21 And she said,ºª According unto your words,º so² [be] it.² And she sent them away,ºª and they departed:¹ª² and she boundºª² the scarletº lineº in the window.º 22 And they went,¹ª² and cameºª unto the mountain,º and abodeºª there² threeº days,º until² the pursuersºª were returned:ºª and the pursuersºª soughtºª [them] throughout all² the way,º but foundºª [them] not.²

23 ¶ So the twoº men¹² returned,ºª and descendedºª from the mountain,º² and passed over,ºª and cameºª to² Joshuaº the sonº of Nun,º and toldºª him² all² [things] that befellºª them: 24 And they saidºª unto² Joshua,º Trulyº the LORDº hath deliveredºª into our handsº² all² the land;º for even² all² the inhabitantsºª of the countryº do faintºª because¹ of²² us.
