1 Now Saul° told° Jonathan° his son° and all° his servants° ato put° David° to death°. But bJonathan°, Saul’s° son°, greatly° delighted° in David°. 2 So Jonathan° told° David° saying°, “Saul° my father° is seeking° to put° you to death°. Now° therefore, please° be on guard° in the morning°, and stay° in a secret° place° and hide° yourself. 3 I will go° out and stand° beside° my father° in the field° where°° you are, and I will speak° with my father° about you; aif I Ifind° out anything°, then I will tell° you.” 4 Then Jonathan° aspoke° well° of David° to Saul° his father° and said° to him, “bDo not let the king° sin° against his servant° David°, since° he has not sinned° against you, and since° his deeds° [have been] very° Ibeneficial° to you. 5 For ahe took° his life° in his hand° and struck° the Philistine°, and bthe LORD° brought° about° a great° deliverance° for all° Israel°; you saw° [it] and rejoiced°. cWhy° then will you sin° against innocent° blood° by putting° David° to death° without° a cause°?” 6 Saul° listened° to the voice° of Jonathan°, and Saul° vowed°, “As the LORD° lives°, he shall not be put° to death°.” 7 Then Jonathan° called° David°, and Jonathan° told° him all° these° words°. And Jonathan° brought° David° to Saul°, and he was in his presence° as aformerly°°.

8 ¶ When there was war° again°, David° went° out and fought° with the Philistines° and Idefeated° them with great° slaughter°, so that they fled° before°° him. 9 Now there was aan evil° spirit° from the LORD° on Saul° as he was sitting° in his house° bwith his spear° in his hand°, cand David° was playing° [the harp] with [his] hand°. 10 aSaul° tried° to Ipin° David° to the wall° with the spear°, but he slipped° away° out of Saul’s° presence°, so that he IIstuck° the spear° into the wall°. And David° fled° and escaped° that night°.

11 ¶ Then aSaul° sent° messengers° to David’s° house° to watch° him, in order to put° him to death° in the morning°. But Michal°, David’s° wife°, told° him, saying°, “If° you do not save° your life° tonight°, tomorrow° you will be put° to death°.” 12 aSo Michal° let° David° down° through° a window°, and he went° out and fled° and escaped°. 13 Michal° took° athe Ihousehold° idol° and laid° [it] on the bed°, and put° a quilt° of goats’° [hair] at its head°, and covered° [it] with clothes°. 14 When Saul° sent° messengers° to take° David°, she said°, “aHe is sick°.” 15 Then Saul° sent° messengers° to see° David°, saying°, “Bring° him up to me on Ihis bed°, that I may put° him to death°.” 16 When the messengers° entered°, behold°, the Ihousehold° idol° [was] on the bed° with the quilt° of goats’° [hair] at its head°. 17 So Saul° said° to Michal°, “Why° have you deceived° me like° this° and let° my enemy° go°, so that he has escaped°?” And Michal° said° to Saul°, “He said° to me, ‘Let° me go°! aWhy° should I put° you to death°?’”

18 ¶ Now David° fled° and escaped° and came° ato Samuel° at Ramah°, and told° him all° that Saul° had done° to him. And he and Samuel° went° and stayed° in bNaioth°. 19 It was told° Saul°, saying°, “Behold°, David° is at Naioth° in Ramah°.” 20 Then aSaul° sent° messengers° to take° David°, but when they saw° bthe company° of the prophets° prophesying°, with Samuel° standing° [and] presiding° over° them, the Spirit° of God° came° upon the messengers° of Saul°; and cthey also° prophesied°. 21 When it was told° Saul°, he sent° other° messengers°, and they also° prophesied°. So Saul° sent° messengers° again° the third° time°, and they also° prophesied°. 22 Then he himself° went° to Ramah° and came° as far° as the large° well° that is in Secu°; and he asked° and said°, “Where° are Samuel° and David°?” And [someone] said°, “Behold°, they are at Naioth° in Ramah°.” 23 He Iproceeded° there° to Naioth° in Ramah°; and athe Spirit° of God° came° upon him also°, so that he went° along prophesying° continually° until° he came° to Naioth° in Ramah°. 24 He also° stripped° off° his clothes°, and he too° prophesied° before° Samuel° and Ilay° down° IIanaked° all° that day° and all° that night°. Jonathan discloseth his father's purpose to kill David.

1 ¶ And Saulº spakeºª to² Jonathan¹² his son,º and to² all² his servants,º that they should killºª² David.º 2 But Jonathanº Saul'sº sonº delightedºª muchº in David:º and Jonathanº toldºª David,º saying,ºª Saulº my fatherº seekethºª to killºª thee: now² therefore, I pray thee,² take heed¹ª to thyself² until the morning,º and abideºª in a secretº [place], and hide¹ª thyself:² 3 And I² will go outºª and standºª besideº my fatherº in the fieldº where²² thou² [art], and I² will communeºª with² my fatherº of thee; and whatº I see,ºª that I will tellºª thee.

He persuadeth his father to reconciliation.

4 ¶ And Jonathanº spakeºª goodº of Davidº unto² Saulº his father,º and saidºª unto² him, Let not² the kingº sinºª against his servant,º against David;º because² he hath not² sinnedºª against thee, and because² his worksº [have been] to thee-ward veryº good:º 5 For he did putºª² his lifeº in his hand,º and slewºª² the Philistine,º and the LORDº wroughtºª a greatº salvationº for all² Israel:º thou sawestºª [it], and didst rejoice:ºª wherefore² then wilt thou sinºª against innocentº blood,º to slayºª² Davidº without a cause?º 6 And Saulº hearkenedºª unto the voiceº of Jonathan:º and Saulº sware,ºª [As] the LORDº liveth,º he shall notº be slain.ºª 7 And Jonathanº calledºª David,º and Jonathanº shewedºª him² all² those² things.º And Jonathanº broughtºª² Davidº to² Saul,º and he was² in his presence,º as in times past.ºº

By reason of David's good success in a new war, Saul's malicious rage breaketh out against him.

8 ¶ And there was² warº again:ºª and Davidº went out,ºª and foughtºª with the Philistines,º and slewºª them with a greatº slaughter;º and they fledºª fromº² him. 9 And the evilº spiritº from the LORDº was² upon² Saul,º as he² satºª in his houseº with his javelinº in his hand:º and Davidº playedºª with [his] hand.º 10 And Saulº soughtºª to smiteºª Davidº even to the wallº with the javelin;º but he slipped awayºª out of Saul's¹ presence,º²² and he smoteºª² the javelinº into the wall:º and Davidº fled,ºª and escapedºª that² night.º 11 Saulº also sentºª messengersº unto² David'sº house,º to watchºª him, and to slayºª him in the morning:º and Michalº David'sº wifeº toldºª him, saying,ºª If² thou saveºª not²² thy lifeº to night,º to morrowº thou² shalt be slain.ºª

Michal deceiveth her father with an image in David's bed.

12 ¶ So Michalº let¹ª David¹ downºª²² through² a window:º and he went,¹ª² and fled,ºª and escaped.ºª 13 And Michalº tookºª² an image,º and laidºª [it] in² the bed,º and putºª a pillowº of goats'º [hair] for his bolster,º and coveredºª [it] with a cloth.º 14 And when Saulº sentºª messengersº to takeºª² David,º she said,ºª He² [is] sick.ºª 15 And Saulº sentºª² the messengersº [again] to seeºª² David,º saying,ºª Bring him upºª² to² me in the bed,º that I may slayºª him. 16 And when the messengersº were come in,ºª behold,² [there was] an imageº in² the bed,º with a pillowº of goats'º [hair] for his bolster.º 17 And Saulº saidºª unto² Michal,º Why² hast thou deceived² me so,¹ª² and sent awayºª² mine enemy,ºª that he is escaped?ºª And Michalº answeredºª² Saul,º He² saidºª unto² me, Let me go;ºª why² should I killºª thee?

David cometh to Samuel in Naioth.

18 ¶ So Davidº fled,ºª and escaped,ºª and cameºª to² Samuelº to Ramah,º and toldºª him² all² that² Saulº had doneºª to him. And he² and Samuelº went¹ª² and dweltºª in Naioth.º 19 And it was toldºª Saul,º saying,ºª Behold,² Davidº [is] at Naiothº in Ramah.º

Saul's messengers sent to take David,
