The Words of Lemuel

1 The words° of King° Lemuel°, the Ioracle° which° his mother° taught° him:

[1] IOr burden

  2 ¶ What°, O my son°?
  And what°, O ason° of my womb°?
  And what°, O son° of my bvows°?
  3 aDo not give° your strength° to women°,
  Or your ways° to that which bdestroys° kings°.
  4 It is not for akings°, O Lemuel°,
  It is not for kings° to bdrink° wine°,
  Or for rulers° to desire° strong° drink°,
  5 For they will drink° and forget° what is decreed°,
  And apervert° the Irights° of all° the IIafflicted°°.
  6 Give° strong° drink° to him who is aperishing°,
  And wine° to him Ibwhose life° is bitter°.
  7 Let him drink° and forget° his poverty°
  And remember° his trouble° no° more°.
  8 aOpen° your mouth° for the mute°,
  For the Irights° of all° the IIunfortunate°°.
  9 Open° your mouth°, ajudge° righteously°,
  And Idefend° the brights° of the afflicted° and needy°.

Description of a Worthy Woman

  10 ¶ An aexcellent° wife°, who° can find°?
  For her worth° is far° babove° jewels°.
  11 The heart° of her husband° trusts° in her,
  And he will have° no° lack° of gain°.
  12 She does° him good° and not evil°
  All° the days° of her life°.
  13 She looks° for wool° and flax°
  And works° with her Ihands° IIin delight°.
  14 She is like amerchant° ships°;
  She brings° her food° from afar°.
  15 She arises° also while it is still° night°
  And bgives° food° to her household°
  And Iportions° to her maidens°.
  16 She considers° a field° and buys° it;
  From Iher earnings°° she plants° a vineyard°.
  17 She agirds° Iherself° with strength°
  And makes° her arms° strong°.
  18 She senses° that her gain° is good°;
  Her lamp° does not go° out at night°.
  19 She stretches° out her hands° to the distaff°,
  And her Ihands° grasp° the spindle°.
  20 She Iaextends° her hand° to the poor°,
  And she stretches° out her hands° to the needy°.
  21 She is not afraid° of the snow° for her household°,
  For all° her household° are aclothed° with scarlet°.
  22 She makes° acoverings° for herself;
  Her clothing° is bfine° linen° and cpurple°.
  23 Her husband° is known° ain the gates°,
  When he sits° among° the elders° of the land°.
  24 She makes° alinen° garments° and sells° [them],
  And Isupplies° belts° to the IItradesmen°.
  25 Strength° and adignity° are her clothing°,
  And she smiles° at the Ifuture°°.
  26 She aopens° her mouth° in wisdom°,
  And the Iteaching° of kindness° is on her tongue°.
  27 She looks° well° to the ways° of her household°,
  And does not eat° the abread° of idleness°.
  28 Her children° rise° up and bless° her;
  Her husband° [also], and he praises° her, [saying]:
  29 “Many° daughters° have done° nobly°,
  But you excel° them all°.”
  30 Charm° is deceitful° and beauty° is vain°,
  [But] a woman° who Iafears° the LORD°, she shall be praised°.
  31 Give° her the Iproduct° of her hands°,
  And let her works° praise° her in the gates°.

Lemuel's lesson of chastity and temperance.

1 ¶ The wordsº of kingº Lemuel,º the prophecyº that² his motherº taughtºª him. 2 What,² my son?º and what,² the sonº of my womb?º and what,² the sonº of my vows?º 3 Giveºª not² thy strengthº unto women,º nor thy waysº to that which destroyethºª kings.º 4 [It is] not² for kings,º O Lemuel,º [it is] not² for kingsº to drinkºª wine;º nor² for¹ª¹ princesºª strong drink:º 5 Lest² they drink,ºª and forgetºª the law,ºª and pervertºª the judgmentº of any² of the afflicted.ºº

6 Giveºª strong drinkº unto him that is ready to perish,ºª and wineº unto those that be of heavyº hearts.º 7 Let him drink,ºª and forgetºª his poverty,º and rememberºª his miseryº no² more.² 8 Openºª thy mouthº for the dumbº in² the causeº of all² such as are appointedº to destruction.º 9 Openºª thy mouth,º judgeºª righteously,º and plead¹ª the cause² of the poorº and needy.º

The praise and properties of a good wife.

10 ¶ Who² can findºª a virtuousº woman?º for her priceº [is] farº above rubies.º² 11 The heartº of her husbandº doth safely trustºª in her, so that he shall have no² needºª of spoil.º 12 She will doºª him goodº and not² evilº all² the daysº of her life.º 13 She seekethºª wool,º and flax,º and workethºª willinglyº with her hands.º 14 She is² like the merchants'ºª ships;º she bringethºª her foodº from afar.º² 15 She risethºª also while it is yet² night,º and givethºª meatº to her household,º and a portionº to her maidens.º 16 She considerethºª a field,º and buyethºª it: with the fruitº² of her handsº she plantethºª a vineyard.º 17 She girdethºª her loinsº with strength,º and strengthenethºª her arms.º 18 She perceivethºª that² her merchandiseº [is] good:º her candleº goeth not outºª² by night.º 19 She layethºª her handsº to the spindle,º and her handsº holdºª the distaff.º 20 She stretcheth outºª her handº to the poor;º yea, she reacheth forthºª her handsº to the needy.º 21 She is not² afraidºª of the snowº² for her household:º for² all² her householdº [are] clothedºª with scarlet.º 22 She makethºª herself coverings of tapestry;º her clothingº [is] silkº and purple.º 23 Her husbandº is knownºª in the gates,º when he sittethºª among² the eldersº of the land.º 24 She makethºª fine linen,º and sellethºª [it]; and deliverethºª girdlesº unto the merchant.º 25 Strengthº and honourº [are] her clothing;º and she shall rejoiceºª in timeº to come.º 26 She openethºª her mouthº with wisdom;º and in² her tongueº [is] the lawº of kindness.º 27 She looketh wellºª to the waysºª of her household,º and eatethºª not² the breadº of idleness.º 28 Her childrenº arise up,ºª and call her blessed;ºª her husbandº [also], and he praisethºª her. 29 Manyº daughtersº have doneºª virtuously,º but thou² excellestºª² them all.² 30 Favourº [is] deceitful,º and beautyº [is] vain:º [but] a womanº [that] fearethº the LORD,º she² shall be praised.ºª 31 Giveºª her of the fruitº² of her hands;º and let her own worksº praiseºª her in the gates.º
