Ruth gleaneth in the fields of Boaz.

1 ¶ And Naomiº had a kinsmanºª¹ª of her husband's,º a mightyº manº of wealth,º of the familyº² of Elimelech;º and his nameº [was] Boaz.º 2 And Ruthº the Moabitessº saidºª unto² Naomi,º Let me now² go¹ª² to the field,º and gleanºª ears of cornº afterº² [him] in whose sightº I shall findºª grace.º And she saidºª unto her, Go,¹ª² my daughter.º 3 And she went,¹ª² and came,ºª and gleanedºª in the fieldº afterº the reapers:ºª and her hapº was to lightºª on a partº of the fieldº [belonging] unto Boaz,º who² [was] of the kindredº² of Elimelech.º

Boaz taking knowledge of her,

4 ¶ And, behold,² Boazº cameºª from Bethlehem,º² and saidºª unto the reapers,ºª The LORDº [be] with² you. And they answeredºª him, The LORDº blessºª thee. 5 Then saidºª Boazº unto his servantº that was setºª over² the reapers,ºª Whose² damselº [is] this?² 6 And the servantº that was setºª over² the reapersºª answeredºª and said,ºª It² [is] the Moabitishº damselº that came backºª with² Naomiº out of the countryº² of Moab:º 7 And she said,ºª I pray² you, let me gleanºª and gatherºª afterº the reapersºª among the sheaves:º so she came,ºª and hath continuedºª even¹ from²² the morningº until² now,² that² she tarriedºª a littleº in the house.º

sheweth her great favour.

8 Then saidºª Boazº unto² Ruth,º Hearestºª thou not,² my daughter?º Go¹ª² not² to gleanºª in anotherº field,º neither²² goºª from hence,²² but² abideºª here fast by² my maidens:º 9 [Let] thine eyesº [be] on the fieldº that² they do reap,ºª and goºª thou afterº them: have I not² chargedºª² the young menº that they shall not² touchºª thee? and when thou art athirst,ºª goºª unto² the vessels,º and drinkºª of [that] which²² the young menº have drawn.ºª 10 Then she fellºª on² her face,º and bowed¹ª herself² to the ground,º and saidºª unto² him, Why² have I foundºª graceº in thine eyes,º that thou shouldest take knowledgeºª of me, seeing I² [am] a stranger?º 11 And Boazº answeredºª and saidºª unto her, It hath fullyºª been shewedºª me, all² that² thou hast doneºª unto² thy mother in lawº sinceº the deathº of thine husband:º and [how] thou hast leftºª thy fatherº and thy mother,º and the landº of thy nativity,º and art come¹ª² unto² a peopleº which² thou knewestºª not² heretofore.ºº 12 The LORDº recompenseºª thy work,º and a fullº rewardº be given² thee of²² the LORDº Godº of Israel,º under² whose² wingsº thou art comeºª to trust.ºª 13 Then she said,ºª Let me findºª favourº in thy sight,º my lord;º for² that thou hast comfortedºª me, and for that² thou hast spokenºª friendlyº² unto thine handmaid,º though I² be² not² like unto oneº of thine handmaidens.º 14 And Boazº saidºª unto her, At mealtimeºº comeºª thou hither,º and eatºª of² the bread,º and dipºª thy morselº in the vinegar.º And she satºª besideº² the reapers:ºª and he reachedºª her parchedº [corn], and she did eat,ºª and was sufficed,ºª and left.ºª 15 And when she was risen upºª to glean,ºª Boazº commandedºª² his young men,º saying,ºª Let her gleanºª even² among² the sheaves,º and reproachºª her not:² 16 And let fallºª also² [some] of² the handfulsº of purposeºª for her, and leaveºª [them], that she may gleanºª [them], and rebukeºª her not.² 17 So she gleanedºª in the fieldº until² even,º and beat outºª² that² she had gleaned:ºª and it was² about an ephahº of barley.º

That which she got, she carrieth to Naomi.

18 ¶ And she took [it] up,ºª and wentºª into the city:º and her mother in lawº sawºª² what² she had gleaned:ºª and she brought forth,ºª and gaveºª to her² that² she had reservedºª after she was sufficed.º² 19 And her mother in lawº saidºª unto her, Where² hast thou gleanedºª to day?º and whereº wroughtestºª thou? blessedºª be² he that did take knowledgeºª of thee. And she shewedºª her mother in lawº² with² whom² she had wrought,ºª and said,ºª The man'sº nameº with² whom² I wroughtºª to dayº [is] Boaz.º 20 And Naomiº saidºª unto her daughter in law,º Blessedºª [be] he² of the LORD,º who² hath not² left offºª his kindnessº to² the livingº and to² the dead.ºª And Naomiº saidºª unto her, The manº [is] near of kinº unto us, one² of our next kinsmen.ºª² 21 And Ruthº the Moabitessº said,ºª He saidºª unto² me also,² Thou shalt keep fastºª by² my² young men,º until²² they have endedºª² all² my² harvest.º 22 And Naomiº saidºª unto² Ruthº her daughter in law,º [It is] good,º my daughter,º that² thou go outºª with² his maidens,º that they meetºª thee not² in any otherº field.º 23 So she kept fastºª by the maidensº of Boazº to gleanºª unto² the endºª of barleyº harvestº and of wheatº harvest;º and dweltºª with² her mother in law.º
