NASB — Proverbs 19 — KJV

On Life and Conduct

  1 aBetter° is a poor° man who bwalks° in his integrity°
  Than° he who° is perverse° in Ispeech° and is a fool°.
  2 Also° it is not good° for a person° to be without° knowledge°,
  And he who hurries° Iahis footsteps° IIerrs°.
  3 The afoolishness° of man° ruins° his way°,
  And his heart° brages° against° the LORD°.
  4 aWealth° adds° many° friends°,
  But a poor° man° is separated° from his friend°.
  5 A afalse° witness° will not go° unpunished°,
And he who Ibtells° lies° will not escape°.
  6 aMany° will seek° the favor° of a Igenerous° man°,
  And every° man° is a friend° to him who bgives gifts°.
  7 All° the brothers° of a poor° man° hate° him;
  How° much°° more° do his afriends° abandon° him!
He bpursues° [them with] words°, [but] they are Igone°.
  8 He who gets° Iwisdom° loves° his own soul°;
  He who keeps° understanding° will afind° good°.
  9 A afalse° witness° will not go° unpunished°,
  And he who Itells° lies° will perish°.
  10 Luxury° is anot fitting° for a fool°;
  Much°° less° for a bslave° to rule° over princes°.
  11 A man’s° adiscretion° makes° him slow° to anger°,
  And it is his glory° bto overlook° a transgression°.
  12 The aking’s° wrath° is like the roaring° of a lion°,
But his favor° is like bdew° on the grass°.
  13 A afoolish° son° is destruction° to his father°,
  And the bcontentions° of a wife° are a constant° dripping°.
  14 House° and wealth° are an ainheritance° from fathers°,
  But a prudent° wife° is from the LORD°.
  15 aLaziness° casts° into a deep° sleep°,
  And an idle° Iman° will suffer° hunger°.
  16 He who akeeps° the commandment° keeps° his soul°,
[But] he who Iis careless° of IIconduct° will die°.
  17 One who ais gracious° to a poor° man° lends° to the LORD°,
And He will repay° him for his Ibgood° deed°.
  18 aDiscipline° your son° while° there° is hope°,
And do not desire°° Ihis death°.
  19 [A man of] great° anger° will bear° the penalty°,
For if° you rescue° [him], you will only have to do° it again°.
  20 aListen° to counsel° and accept° discipline°,
That you may be wise° Ithe rest° of your days.
  21 Many° aplans° are in a man’s° heart°,
But the bcounsel° of the LORD° will stand°.
  22 What° is desirable° in a man° is his Ikindness°,
  And [it is] better° to be a poor° man than° a liar°°.
  23 The Iafear° of the LORD° [leads] to life°,
  So that one may sleep° bsatisfied°, IIcuntouched°° by evil°.
  24 The asluggard° buries° his hand° bin the dish°,
[But] will not even° bring° it back° to his mouth°.
  25 aStrike° a scoffer° and the Inaive° may become° shrewd°,
  But breprove° one who has° understanding° and he will IIgain° knowledge°.
  26 He awho assaults° [his] father° [and] drives° [his] mother° away°
  Is a shameful° and disgraceful° son°.
  27 Cease° listening°, my son°, to discipline°,
[And you will] stray° from the words° of knowledge°.
  28 A rascally° witness° makes° a mockery° of justice°,
  And the mouth° of the wicked° Iaspreads° iniquity°.
  29 IJudgments° are prepared° for ascoffers°,
  And bblows° for the back° of fools°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ Betterº [is] the poorºª that walkethºª in his integrity,º than [he that is] perverseº² in his lips,º and is a fool.º 2 Also,² [that] the soulº [be] without² knowledge,º [it is] not² good;º and he that hastethºª with [his] feetº sinneth.ºª 3 The foolishnessº of manº pervertethºª his way:º and his heartº frettethºª against² the LORD.º 4 Wealthº makethºª manyº friends;º but the poorº is separatedºª from his neighbour.º² 5 A falseº witnessº shall not² be unpunished,ºª and [he that] speakethºª liesº shall not² escape.ºª 6 Manyº will intreatºª the favourº of the prince:º and every man² [is] a friendº to him¹ that giveth gifts.º² 7 All² the brethrenº of the poorºª do hateºª him: how much more²² do his friendsº go farºª from² him? he pursuethºª [them with] words,º [yet] they² [are] wanting² [to him]. 8 He that gettethºª wisdomº lovethºª his own soul:º he that keepethºª understandingº shall findºª good.º 9 A falseº witnessº shall not² be unpunished,ºª and [he that] speakethºª liesº shall perish.ºª 10 Delightº is not² seemlyº for a fool;º much less² for² a servantº to have ruleºª over princes.º 11 The discretionº of a manº deferrethºª his anger;º and [it is] his gloryº to pass² over¹ª² a transgression.º 12 The king'sº wrathº [is] as the roaringº of a lion;º but his favourº [is] as dewº upon² the grass.º 13 A foolishº sonº [is] the calamityº of his father:º and the contentionsº of a wifeº [are] a continualºª dropping.º 14 Houseº and richesº [are] the inheritanceº of fathers:º and a prudentºª wifeº [is] from the LORD.º² 15 Slothfulnessº castethºª into a deep sleep;º and an idleº soulº shall suffer hunger.ºª 16 He that keepethºª the commandmentº keepethºª his own soul;º [but] he that despisethºª his waysº shall die.ºª 17 He that hath pityºª upon the poorº lendethºª unto the LORD;º and that which he hath givenº will he pay him again.ºª 18 Chastenºª thy sonº while² there isº hope,º and let not² thy soulº spareºª for² his crying.ºª 19 A man¹ of great¹² wrathº shall sufferºª punishment:º for² if² thou deliverºª [him], yet² thou must do it again.ºª 20 Hearºª counsel,º and receiveºª instruction,º that² thou mayest be wiseºª in thy latter² end.¹ 21 [There are] manyº devicesº in a man'sº heart;º nevertheless the counselº of the LORD,º that² shall stand.ºª 22 The desireº of a manº [is] his kindness:º and a poor² man¹ª²² [is] betterº than¹ a liar.º 23 The fearº of the LORDº [tendeth] to life:º and [he that hath it] shall abideºª satisfied;º he shall not² be visitedºª with evil.º 24 A slothfulº [man] hidethºª his handº in [his] bosom,º and will not² so much² as bring¹ª it to his mouth¹ again.ºª²² 25 Smiteºª a scorner,ºª and the simpleº will beware:ºª and reproveºª one that hath understanding,ºª [and] he will understandºª knowledge.º 26 He that wastethºª [his] father,º [and] chaseth awayºª [his] mother,º [is] a sonº that causeth shame,ºª and bringeth reproach.ºª 27 Cease,ºª my son,º to hearºª the instructionº [that causeth] to errºª from the wordsº² of knowledge.º 28 An ungodlyº witnessº scornethºª judgment:º and the mouthº of the wickedº devourethºª iniquity.º 29 Judgmentsº are preparedºª for scorners,ºª and stripesº for the backº of fools.º
