Eliphaz Says Job Presumes Much

1 Then Eliphaz° the Temanite° Iresponded°°,
  2 “Should a wise° man° answer° with windy° knowledge°
  aAnd fill° Ihimself° with the east° wind°?
  3 “Should he argue° with useless°° talk°,
  Or with words° which are not profitable°?
  4 “Indeed°, you do° away° with Ireverence°
  And hinder° meditation° before° God°.
  5 “For ayour guilt° teaches° your mouth°,
  And you choose° the language° of bthe crafty°.
  6 “Your aown mouth° condemns° you, and not I;
  And your own lips° testify° against you.

  [What] do you understand° that Iwe do not?
  10 “Both° the agray-haired° and the aged° are among us,
  Older°° than° your father°.
  11 “Are athe consolations° of God° too° small° for you,
  Even the bword° [spoken] gently° with you?
  12 “Why° does your aheart° carry° you away?
  And why° do your eyes° flash°,
  13 That you should turn° your spirit° against° God°
  And allow [such] words° to go° out of your mouth°?
  14 “What° is man°, that ahe should be pure°,
  Or bhe who is born° of a woman°, that he should be righteous°?
  15 “Behold°, He puts° no° trust° in His aholy° ones°,
  And the bheavens° are not pure° in His sight°;
  16 How° much°° less° one who is adetestable° and corrupt°,

What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life

  17 ¶ “I will tell° you, listen° to me;
  And what° I have seen° I will also declare°;
  18 What° wise° men° have told°,
  And have not concealed° from atheir fathers°,
  19 To whom° alone° the land° was given°,
  And no° alien° passed° among° them.
  20 “The wicked° man° writhes° ain pain° all° [his] days°,
  And Inumbered° are the years° bstored° up for the ruthless°.
  21ISounds° of aterror° are in his ears°;
  bWhile at peace° the destroyer° comes° upon him.
  22 “He does not believe° that he will areturn° from darkness°,
  And he is destined° for bthe sword°.
  23 “He wanders° about for food°, saying, ‘Where° is it?’
  He knows° that a day° of adarkness° is Iat hand°.
  24 “Distress° and anguish° terrify° him,
  They overpower° him like a king° ready° for the attack°,
  25 Because° he has stretched° out his hand° against° God°
  And conducts° himself aarrogantly° against° Ithe Almighty°.
  26 “He rushes° Iheadlong° at Him
  With IIhis massive°° shield°.
  27 “For he has acovered° his face° with his fat°
  And made° his thighs° heavy° with flesh°.
  28 “He has alived° in desolate° cities°,
  In houses° no° one would inhabit°,
  Which° are destined° to become Iruins°.
  29 “He awill not become° rich°, nor° will his wealth° endure°;
  And his grain° will not bend° down° to the ground°.
  30 “He will anot Iescape° from darkness°;
  The bflame° will wither° his shoots°,
  And by cthe breath° of His mouth° he will go° away°.
  31 “Let him not atrust° in emptiness°, deceiving° himself;
  For emptiness° will be his Ireward°.
  32 “It will be accomplished° abefore° his time°,
  And his palm° bbranch° will not be green°.
  33 “He will drop° off° his unripe° grape° like the vine°,
  And will acast° off° his flower° like the olive° tree°.
  34 “For the company° of athe godless° is barren°,
  And fire° consumes° bthe tents° of Ithe corrupt°.
  35 “They aconceive° Imischief° and bring° forth° iniquity°,
  And their IImind° prepares° deception°.”

Eliphaz reproveth Job of impiety in justifying himself.

1 ¶ Then answeredºª Eliphazº the Temanite,º and said,ºª 2 Should a wise² man¹ utterºª vainº knowledge,º and fillºª his bellyº with the east wind?º 3 Should he reasonºª with unprofitableºª² talk?º or with speechesº wherewith he can do no² good?ºª 4 Yea,² thou² castest offºª fear,º and restrainestºª prayerº beforeº God.º 5 For² thy mouthº utterethºª thine iniquity,º and thou choosestºª the tongueº of the crafty.º 6 Thine own mouthº condemnethºª thee, and not² I:² yea, thine own lipsº testifyºª against thee. 7 [Art] thou the firstºª manº [that] was born?ºª or wast thou madeºª beforeº the hills?º 8 Hast thou heardºª the secretº of God?º and dost thou restrainºª wisdomº to² thyself? 9 What² knowestºª thou, that we knowºª not?² [what] understandestºª thou, which² [is] not² in² us? 10 With us [are] both² the grayheadedºª and² very aged¹ men,² much¹ elderº² than thy father.º² 11 [Are] the consolationsº of Godº smallº with² thee? is there any secretº thingº with² thee? 12 Why² doth thine heartº carry thee away?ºª and what² do thy eyesº wink at,ºª 13 That² thou turnestºª thy spiritº against² God,º and lettest [such] wordsº go outºª of thy mouth?º² 14 What² [is] man,º that² he should be clean?ºª and [he which is] bornºª of a woman,º that² he should be righteous?ºª 15 Behold,² he putteth no trustºª² in his saints;º yea, the heavensº are not² cleanºª in his sight.º 16 How much more²² abominableºª and filthyºª [is] man,º which drinkethºª iniquityºª like water?º

He proveth by tradition the unquietness of wicked men.

17 I will shewºª thee, hearºª me; and that² [which] I have seenºª I will declare;ºª 18 Which² wiseº men have toldºª from their fathers,º² and have not² hidºª [it]: 19 Unto whom alone² the earthº was given,ºª and no² strangerºª passedºª amongº them. 20 The wicked¹ man² travaileth¹ª with pain² all² [his] days,º and the numberº of yearsº is hiddenºª to the oppressor.º 21 A dreadfulº soundº [is] in his ears:º in prosperityº the destroyerºª shall come¹ª upon² him. 22 He believethºª not² that he shall returnºª out of² darkness,º and he² is waited¹ª for² of² the sword.º 23 He² wandereth abroadºª for bread,º [saying], Where² [is it]? he knowethºª that² the dayº of darknessº is readyºª at his hand.º 24 Troubleº and anguishº shall make him afraid;ºª they shall prevail¹ª against² him, as a kingº readyº to the battle.º 25 For² he stretcheth outºª his handº against² God,º and strengtheneth¹ª himself² against² the Almighty.º 26 He runnethºª upon² him, [even] on [his] neck,º upon the thickº bossesº of his bucklers:º 27 Because² he coverethºª his faceº with his fatness,º and makethºª collops of fatº on² [his] flanks.º 28 And he dwelleth¹ª in² desolateºª cities,º [and] in houses¹ which² no² man inhabiteth,ºª which² are readyºª to become heaps.º 29 He shall not² be rich,ºª neither² shall his substanceº continue,ºª neither² shall he prolongºª the perfectionº thereof upon the earth.º 30 He shall not² departºª out of² darkness;º the flameº shall dry upºª his branches,º and by the breathº of his mouthº shall he go away.ºª 31 Let not² him that is deceivedºª trustºª in vanity:º for² vanityº shall be² his recompence.º 32 It shall be accomplishedºª beforeº his time,º and his branchº shall not² be green.º 33 He shall shake offºª his unripe grapeº as the vine,º and shall cast offºª his flowerº as the olive.º 34 For² the congregationº of hypocritesº [shall be] desolate,º and fireº shall consumeºª the tabernaclesº of bribery.º 35 They conceiveºª mischief,º and bring forthºª vanity,º and their bellyº preparethºª deceit.º
