BOOK 3

The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous.

A Psalm of Asaph.

  1 Surely° God° is agood° to Israel°,
  To those who° are bpure° in heart°!
  2 But as for me, amy feet° came° close° to stumbling°,
  My steps° Ihad almost° slipped°.
  3 For I was aenvious° of the Iarrogant°
  [As] I saw° the bprosperity° of the wicked°.
  4 For there° are no° pains° in their death°,
  And their Ibody° is fat°.
  5 They are anot Iin trouble° [as other] IImen°,
  Nor° are they bplagued° IIIlike° mankind°.
  6 Therefore° pride° is atheir necklace°;
  The bgarment° of violence° covers° them.
  7 Their eye° Ibulges° from afatness°;
  The imaginations° of [their] heart° IIrun° riot°.
  8 They amock° and Iwickedly° speak° of oppression°;
  They bspeak° from on high°.
  9 They have aset° their mouth° Iagainst the heavens°,
  And their tongue° IIparades° through the earth°.

The prophet, prevailing in a temptation,

1 ¶ [[A Psalmº of Asaph.]]º Truly² Godº [is] goodº to Israel,º [even] to such as are of a cleanº heart.º

[1] Ps 2:6; 42:11; 51:10; 73:18; 84:11; Is 63:7; Jr 4:14; Mt 5:8; Lk 12:32; Jn 1:47; Ro 2:28; 4:16; 9:6; Tit 3:5; Jm 4:8.

sheweth the occasion thereof, the prosperity of the wicked:

2 But as for me,² my feetº were almostº gone;ºªªª my stepsº had well nighº slipped.ºª 3 For² I was enviousºª at the foolish,ºª [when] I sawºª the prosperityº of the wicked.º 4 For² [there are] no² bandsº in their death:º but their strengthº [is] firm.º 5 They [are] not² in troubleº [as other] men;º neither² are they plaguedºª likeº [other] men.º 6 Therefore² prideº compasseth them about as a chain;ºª violenceº coverethºª them [as] a garment.º 7 Their eyesº stand outºª with fatness:º² they have moreºª than heartº could wish.º 8 They are corrupt,ºª and speakºª wickedlyº [concerning] oppression:º they speakºª loftily.º² 9 They setºª their mouthº against the heavens,º and their tongueº walkethºª through the earth.º 10 Therefore² his peopleº returnºªªª hither:º and watersº of a fullº [cup] are wrung outºª to them. 11 And they say,ºª How² doth Godº know?ºª and is thereº knowledgeº in the most High?º 12 Behold,² these² [are] the ungodly,º who prosperº in the world;º they increaseºª [in] riches.º

The victory over it, knowledge of God's purpose, in destroying of the wicked, and sustaining the righteous.

15 If² I say,ºª I will speakºª thus;º behold,² I should offendºª [against] the generationº of thy children.º 16 When I thoughtºª to knowºª this,² it² [was] too painfulº for² me;¹ 17 Until² I wentºª into² the sanctuaryº of God;º [then] understoodºª I their end.º 18 Surely² thou didst setºª them in slippery places:º thou castedst them downºª into destruction.º 19 How² are² they [brought] into desolation,º as in a moment!º they are utterly¹ª consumedºª² with² terrors.º 20 As a dreamº when [one] awaketh;ºª² [so], O Lord,º when thou awakest,º thou shalt despiseºª their image.º 21 Thus² my heartº was grieved,ºª and I was prickedºª in my reins.º 22 So foolishº [was] I,² and ignorant:ºª² I was² [as] a beastº before² thee. 23 Nevertheless I² [am] continuallyº with² thee: thou hast holdenºª [me] by my rightº hand.º 24 Thou shalt guideºª me with thy counsel,º and afterwardº receiveºª me [to] glory.º 25 Whom² have I in heavenº [but thee]? and [there is] none² upon earthº [that] I desireºª beside² thee. 26 My fleshº and my heartº faileth:ºª [but] Godº [is] the strengthº of my heart,º and my portionº for ever.º 27 For,² lo,² they that are farº from thee shall perish:ºª thou hast destroyedºª all² them that go a whoringºª from² thee. 28 But¹ [it² is] goodº for me to draw nearº to God:º I have putºª my trustº in the Lordº GOD,º that I may declareºª all² thy works.º
