A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

  1 aBe gracious° to me, O God°, according to Your lovingkindness°;
  According to the greatness° of bYour compassion° cblot° out my transgressions°.
  2 aWash° me thoroughly° from my iniquity°
  And bcleanse° me from my sin°.
  3 For II aknow° my transgressions°,
  And my sin° is ever° before° me.
  4 aAgainst You, You only°, I have sinned°
  And done° what° is bevil° in Your sight°,
  So° that cYou Iare justified° IIwhen You speak°
  And IIIblameless° when You judge°.

  5 ¶ Behold°, I was abrought° forth° in iniquity°,

He prayeth for sanctification.

6 Behold,² thou desirestºª truthº in the inward parts:º and in the hiddenºª [part] thou shalt make me to knowºª wisdom.º 7 Purgeºª me with hyssop,º and I shall be clean:ºª washºª me, and I shall be whiterºª than snow.º² 8 Make me to hearºª joyº and gladness;º [that] the bonesº [which] thou hast brokenºª may rejoice.ºª 9 Hideºª thy faceº from my sins,º² and blot outºª all² mine iniquities.º 10 Createºª in me a cleanº heart,º O God;º and renewºª a rightºª spiritº withinº me. 11 Cast² me not² away¹ª from thy presence;º² and takeºª not² thy holyº spiritº from² me. 12 Restoreºª unto me the joyº of thy salvation;º and upholdºª me [with thy] free¹² spirit.º 13 [Then] will I teachºª transgressorsºª thy ways;º and sinnersº shall be convertedºª unto² thee. 14 Deliverºª me from bloodguiltiness,º² O God,º thou Godº of my salvation:º [and] my tongueº shall sing aloudºª of thy righteousness.º 15 O Lord,º openºª thou my lips;º and my mouthº shall shew forthºª thy praise.º
