Laws for menservants.

1 ¶ Now these² [are] the judgmentsº which² thou shalt setºª beforeº them. 2 If² thou buyºª an Hebrewº servant,º sixº yearsº he shall serve:ºª and in the seventhº he shall go outºª freeº for nothing.º 3 If² he came inºª by himself,º he shall go outºª by himself:º if² he² were married,ºº then his wifeº shall go outºª with² him. 4 If² his masterº have givenºª him a wife,º and she have bornºª him sonsº or² daughters;º the wifeº and her childrenº shall be² her master's,º and he² shall go outºª by himself.º

For the servant whose ear is bored.

5 And if² the servantº shall plainly¹ª say,ºª I loveºª² my master,º² my wife,º and my children;º I will not² go outºª free:º 6 Then his masterº shall bringºª him unto² the judges;º he shall also bringºª him to² the door,º or² unto² the door post;º and his masterº shall bore¹ª his ear¹ through²²² with an aul;º and he shall serveºª him for ever.º

For women servants.

7 ¶ And if² a manº sellºª² his daughterº to be a maidservant,º she shall not² go outºª as the menservantsº do.ºª 8 If² she please¹¹ not²² her master,º who² hath betrothedºª² her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed:ºª to sellºª her unto a strangeº nationº he shall have no² power,ºª seeing he hath dealt deceitfullyºª with her. 9 And if² he have betrothedºª her unto his son,º he shall dealºª with her after the mannerº of daughters.º 10 If² he takeºª him anotherº [wife]; her food,º her raiment,º and her duty of marriage,º shall he not² diminish.ºª 11 And if² he doºª not² these² threeº unto her, then shall she go outºª freeº without² money.º

For manslaughter.

12 ¶ He that smitethºª a man,º so that he die,ºª shall be surely¹ª put to death.ºª 13 And if² a man lie not in wait,ºª² but Godº deliverºª [him] into his hand;º then I will appointºª thee a placeº whither²² he shall flee.ºª 14 But if² a manº come presumptuouslyºª upon² his neighbour,º to slayºª him with guile;º thou shalt takeºª him from²² mine altar,º that he may die.ºª

15 ¶ And he that smitethºª his father,º or his mother,º shall be surely¹ª put to death.ºª

For stealers of men.

16 ¶ And he that stealethºª a man,º and sellethºª him, or if he be foundºª in his hand,º he shall surely¹ª be put to death.ºª

For cursers of parents.

17 ¶ And he that cursethºª his father,º or his mother,º shall surely¹ª be put to death.ºª

For smiters.

18 ¶ And if² men¹² strive¹ª together,² and oneº smiteºª² anotherº with a stone,º orº with [his] fist,º and he dieºª not,² but keepethºª [his] bed:º 19 If² he rise again,ºª and walkºª abroadº upon² his staff,º then shall he that smoteºª [him] be quit:ºª only² he shall payºª [for] the loss of his time,º and shall cause [him] to be thoroughly¹ª healed.ºª

20 ¶ And if² a manº smiteºª² his servant,º or²² his maid,º with a rod,º and he dieºª under² his hand;º he shall be surely¹ª punished.ºª 21 Notwithstanding,º if² he continueºª a dayº or² two,¹² he shall not² be punished:ºª for² he² [is] his money.º

For a hurt by chance.

22 ¶ If² men¹² strive,ºª and hurtºª a womanº with child,º so that her fruitº departºª [from her], and yet no² mischief² follow:¹² he shall be surely¹ª punished,ºª according as² the woman'sº husbandº will layºª upon² him; and he shall payºª as the judgesº [determine]. 23 And if² [any] mischief² follow,¹² then thou shalt giveºª lifeº for² life,º 24 Eyeº for² eye,º toothº for² tooth,º handº for² hand,º footº for² foot,º 25 Burningº for² burning,º woundº for² wound,º stripeº for² stripe.º

26 ¶ And if² a manº smiteºª² the eyeº of his servant,º or²² the eyeº of his maid,º that it perish;ºª he shall let him goºª freeº for¹ his eye's¹ sake.²² 27 And if² he smite¹ª out² his manservant'sº tooth,º or² his maidservant'sº tooth;º he shall let him goºª freeº for his tooth's¹ sake.²²

For an ox that goreth.

28 ¶ If² an oxº goreºª² a manº or²² a woman,º that they die:ºª then the oxº shall be surely¹ª stoned,ºª and² his fleshº shall not² be eaten;ºª but the ownerº of the oxº [shall be] quit.º 29 But if² the oxº were wont to push with his hornº in time past,ºº² and it hath been testifiedºª to his owner,º and he hath not² kept¹ª him in,² but that he hath killedºª a manº or² a woman;º the oxº shall be stoned,ºª and his ownerº also² shall be put to death.ºª 30 If² there be laidºª on² him a sum of money,º then he shall giveºª for the ransomº of his lifeº whatsoever²² is laidºª upon² him. 31 Whether² he have goredºª a son,º orº have goredºª a daughter,º according to this² judgmentº shall it be doneºª unto him. 32 If² the oxº shall pushºª a manservantº or² a maidservant;º he shall giveºª unto their masterº thirtyº shekelsº of silver,º and the oxº shall be stoned.ºª

For him that is an occasion of harm.

33 ¶ And if² a manº shall openºª a pit,º or² if² a manº shall digºª a pit,º and not² coverºª it, and an oxº or² an assº fallºª therein;² 34 The ownerº of the pitº shall make [it] good,ºª [and] giveºª moneyº unto the ownerº of them; and the deadºª [beast] shall be² his.

35 ¶ And if² one man'sº oxº hurtºª² another's,º² that he die;ºª then they shall sellºª² the liveº ox,º and divideºª² the moneyº of it; and² the deadºª [ox] also² they shall divide.ºª 36 Or² if it be knownºª that² the oxº hath used to pushº in time past,ºº² and his ownerº hath not² kept¹ª him in;² he shall surely¹ª payºª oxº for² ox;º and the deadºª shall be² his own.
