NASB — Proverbs 20 — KJV

On Life and Conduct

  1 aWine° is a mocker°, bstrong° drink° a brawler°,
  And whoever° Iis intoxicated° by it is not wise°.
  2 The terror° of a king° is like the growling° of a lion°;
  He who provokes° him to anger° Iaforfeits° his own life°.
  3 IaKeeping° away° from strife° is an honor° for a man°,
  But any° fool° will IIquarrel°.
  4 The asluggard° does not plow° after° the autumn°,
  So he Ibegs° during the harvest° and has° nothing°.
  5 A plan° in the heart° of a man° is [like] deep° water°,
  But a man° of understanding° draws° it out.
  6 Many° a man° aproclaims° his own° loyalty°,
  But who° can find° a btrustworthy° man°?
  7 A righteous° man° who awalks° in his integrity°
  bHow blessed° are his sons° after° him.
  8 aA king° who sits° on the throne° of justice°
  IDisperses° all° evil° with his eyes°.
  9 aWho° can say°, “I have cleansed° my heart°,
  I am pure° from my sin°”?
  10 IaDiffering° weights° and differing° measures°,
  Both°° of them are abominable° to the LORD°.
  11 It is by his deeds° that a lad° Iadistinguishes° himself
  If° his conduct° is pure° and right°.
  12 The hearing° aear° and the seeing° eye°,
  The LORD° has made° both°° of them.
  13 aDo not love° sleep°, or° you will become° poor°;
  Open° your eyes°, [and] you will be satisfied° with Ifood°.
  14 “Bad°, bad°,” says° the buyer°,
  But when he goes° his way°, then° he boasts°.
  15 There° is gold°, and an abundance° of Ijewels°;
  But the lips° of knowledge° are a more° precious° thing°.
  16 Take° his garment° when° he becomes° surety° for a stranger°;
  And for foreigners°, hold° him in pledge°.
  17 aBread° obtained by falsehood° is sweet° to a man°,
  But afterward° his mouth° will be filled° with gravel°.
  18 Prepare° aplans° by consultation°,
  And bmake° war° by wise° guidance°.
  19 He who agoes° about as a slanderer° reveals° secrets°,
  Therefore do not associate° with Iba gossip°°.
  20 He who acurses° his father° or his mother°,
  His blamp° will go° out in Itime° of darkness°.
  21 An inheritance° gained° hurriedly° at the beginning°
  Will not be blessed° in the end°.
  22 aDo not say°, “I will repay° evil°”;
  bWait° for the LORD°, and He will save° you.
  23 IaDiffering° weights° are an abomination° to the LORD°,
  And a IIbfalse° scale° is not good°.
  24 aMan’s° steps° are [ordained] by the LORD°,
  How° then can man° understand° his way°?
  25 It is a trap° for a man° to say° rashly°, “It is holy°!”
  And aafter° the vows° to make° inquiry°.
  26 A awise° king° winnows° the wicked°,
  And Idrives° the b[threshing] wheel° over° them.
  27 The Iaspirit° of man° is the lamp° of the LORD°,
  Searching° all° the IIinnermost° parts° of his being°.
  28 ILoyalty° and atruth° preserve° the king°,
  And he upholds° his throne° by Irighteousness°.
  29 The glory° of young° men° is their strength°,
  And the Iahonor° of old° men° is their gray° hair°.
  30 aStripes° that wound° scour° away evil°,
  And strokes° [reach] the Iinnermost° parts°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ Wineº [is] a mocker,ºª strong drinkº [is] raging:ºª and whosoever² is deceivedºª thereby is not² wise.ºª 2 The fearº of a kingº [is] as the roaringº of a lion:º [whoso] provoketh him to angerºª sinnethºª [against] his own soul.º 3 [It is] an honourº for a manº to ceaseº from strife:º² but every² foolº will be meddling.ºª 4 The sluggardº will not² plowºª by reason of the cold;º² [therefore] shall he begºªªª in harvest,º and [have] nothing.² 5 Counselº in the heartº of manº [is like] deepº water;º but a manº of understandingº will draw it out.ºª 6 Mostº menº will proclaimºª every oneº his own goodness:º but a faithfulº manº who² can find?ºª 7 The justº [man] walkethºª in his integrity:º his childrenº [are] blessedº afterº him. 8 A kingº that sitteth² in¹ª² the throneº of judgmentº scattereth awayºª all² evilº with his eyes.º 9 Who² can say,ºª I have made my heartº clean,ºª I am pureºª from my sin?º² 10 Divers weights,º [and] divers measures,º bothº of them [are] alikeº abominationº to the LORD.º 11 Even² a childº is knownºª by his doings,º whether² his workº [be] pure,º and whether² [it be] right.º 12 The hearingºª ear,º and the seeingºª eye,º the LORDº hath madeºª even² bothº of them. 13 Loveºª not² sleep,º lest² thou come to poverty;ºª openºª thine eyes,º [and] thou shalt be satisfiedºª with bread.º 14 [It is] naught,º [it is] naught,º saithºª the buyer:ºª but when he is gone¹ª his way,² then² he boasteth.ºª 15 There isº gold,º and a multitudeº of rubies:º but the lipsº of knowledgeº [are] a preciousº jewel.º 16 Takeºª his garmentº that² is suretyºª [for] a stranger:ºª and take a pledgeºª of him for² a strange woman.º 17 Breadº of deceitº [is] sweetº to a man;º but afterwardsº his mouthº shall be filledºª with gravel.º 18 [Every] purposeº is establishedºª by counsel:º and with good adviceº makeºª war.º 19 He that goeth aboutºª [as] a talebearerº revealethºª secrets:º therefore meddleºª not² with him that flatterethºª with his lips.º 20 Whoso cursethºª his fatherº or his mother,º his lampº shall be put outºª in obscureºª darkness.º 21 An inheritanceº [may be] gotten hastilyºªª¹ at the beginning;º but the endº thereof shall not² be blessed.ºª 22 Sayºª not² thou, I will recompenseºª evil;º [but] wait² on¹ª the LORD,º and he shall saveºª thee. 23 Divers weightsº [are] an abominationº unto the LORD;º and a falseº balanceº [is] not² good.º 24 Man'sº goingsº [are] of the LORD;º² how² can a manº then understandºª his own way?º 25 [It is] a snareº to the manº [who] devourethºª [that which is] holy,º and afterº vowsº to make enquiry.ºª 26 A wiseº kingº scatterethºª the wicked,º and bringethºª the wheelº over² them. 27 The spiritº of manº [is] the candleº of the LORD,º searchingºª all² the inward partsº of the belly.º 28 Mercyº and truthº preserveºª the king:º and his throneº is upholdenºª by mercy.º 29 The gloryº of young menº [is] their strength:º and the beautyº of old menº [is] the gray head.º 30 The bluenessº of a woundº cleanseth¹ away² evil:º so [do] stripesº the inward partsº of the belly.º
