Keep Fervent in Your Love

1 Therefore°, since aChrist° has Isuffered° in the flesh°, barm° yourselves also° with the same° purpose°, because° che who has Isuffered° in the flesh° has ceased° from sin°, 2 aso° as to live° bthe rest° of the time° in the flesh° no° longer° for the lusts° of men°, but for the cwill° of God°. 3 For athe time° already past° is sufficient° [for you] to have carried° out the desire° of the Gentiles°, Ibhaving pursued° a course° of sensuality°, lusts°, drunkenness°, carousing°, drinking° parties° and IIabominable° idolatries°. 4 In [all] this°, they are surprised° that you do not run° with [them] into the same° excesses° of adissipation°, and they bmalign° [you]; 5 but they will give° account° to Him who is ready° to judge° athe living° and the dead°. 6 For athe gospel° has for this° purpose been Ipreached° even° to those who are dead°, that though° they are judged° in the flesh° as men°, they may live° in the spirit° according° to [the will of] God°.

12aBeloved°, do not be surprised° at the bfiery° ordeal° among° you, which comes° upon you for your testing°, as though° some strange° thing° were happening° to you; 13 but to the degree° that you ashare° the sufferings° of Christ°, keep on rejoicing°, so° that also° at the brevelation° of His glory° cyou may rejoice° with exultation°. 14 If° you are reviled° Iafor the name° of Christ°, byou are blessed°, cbecause° the Spirit° of glory° and of God° rests° on you. 15 Make° sure that anone°° of you suffers° as a murderer°, or° thief°, or° evildoer°, or° a Ibtroublesome° meddler°; 16 but if° [anyone suffers] as a aChristian°, he is not to be ashamed°, but is to bglorify° God° in this° name°. 17 For [it is] time° for judgment° ato begin° Iwith bthe household° of God°; and if° [it] c[begins] with us first°, what° [will be] the outcome° for those° dwho do° not obey° the egospel° of God°? 18 aAND IF° IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY° THAT THE RIGHTEOUS° IS SAVED°, IWHAT° WILL BECOME° OF THE bGODLESS° MAN° AND THE SINNER°? 19 Therefore°, those° also° who suffer° according° to athe will° of God° shall entrust° their souls° to a faithful° Creator° in doing° what° is right°.

He exhorteth them to cease from sin by the example of Christ, and the consideration of the general end that now approacheth:

1 ¶ Forasmuch then² as¹ Christº hath sufferedºª forº usº in the flesh,º armºª yourselvesº likewiseº with the² sameº mind:º forº he that hath sufferedºª inº the fleshº hath ceasedºª from sin;º 2 That¹ he¹ª no longerº should liveºª the² restº of [his] timeº inº the fleshº to the lustsº of men,º butº to the willº of God.º 3 Forº the timeº pastºª of [our] lifeº may sufficeº usº to have wroughtºª the² willº of the² Gentiles,º when we walkedºª inº lasciviousness,º lusts,º excess of wine,º revellings,º banquetings,º andº abominableº idolatries:º 4 Whereinºº they think it strangeºª that yeº run¹ª not¹ with²² [them] toº the² sameº excessº of riot,º speaking evil ofºª [you]: 5 Whoº shall giveºª accountº to him that isºª readyº to judgeºª the quickºª andº the dead.º 6 Forº forº this causeº was the gospel preachedºª alsoº to them that are dead,º thatº they might be judgedººª according² to¹ menº in the flesh,º butº liveºª according² to¹ Godº in the spirit.º 7 Butº the² endº of all thingsº is at hand:ºª be ye¹ª therefore¹ sober,ºª² andº watchºª untoº prayer.º 8 Andº aboveº all thingsº haveºª ferventº charityº amongº yourselves:º forº charityº shall coverºª the multitudeº of sins.º 9 Use hospitalityº one to anotherºº withoutº grudging.º 10 Asº every manº hath receivedºª the gift,º [even so] ministerºª the sameº one to another,ºº asº goodº stewardsº of the manifoldº graceº of God.º 11 If any manº speak,ºª [let him speak] asº the oraclesº of God;º if any manº minister,ºª [let him do it] asº ofº the abilityº whichº Godº giveth:ºª thatº Godº inº all thingsº may be glorifiedºª throughº Jesusº Christ,º to whomº beºª praiseº andº dominionº for¹ ever¹ and ever.º² Amen.º
