Jeremiah reproving the Jews' disobedience to the prophets,

1 ¶ The wordº that² came² to² Jeremiahº concerning² all² the peopleº of Judahº in the fourthº yearº of Jehoiakimº the sonº of Josiahº kingº of Judah,º that² [was] the firstº yearº of Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylon;º 2 The which² Jeremiahº the prophetº spakeºª unto² all² the peopleº of Judah,º and to² all² the inhabitantsºª of Jerusalem,º saying,ºª 3 From² the thirteenthºº yearº of Josiahº the sonº of Amonº kingº of Judah,º even unto² this² day,º that² [is] the threeº and twentiethº year,º the wordº of the LORDº hath come² unto² me, and I have spokenºª unto² you, rising earlyºª and speaking;ºª but ye have not² hearkened.ºª 4 And the LORDº hath sentºª unto² you² all² his servantsº the prophets,º rising earlyºª and sendingºª [them]; but ye have not² hearkened,ºª nor² inclinedºª² your earº to hear.ºª 5 They said,ºª Turn ye againºª now² every oneº from his evilº way,º² and from the evilº² of your doings,º and dwellºª in² the landº that² the LORDº hath givenºª unto you and to your fathersº for¹ everº and ever:º² 6 And go¹ª² not² afterº otherº godsº to serveºª them, and to worshipºª them, and provoke me not to angerºª²² with the worksº of your hands;º and I will do you no hurt.ºª² 7 Yet ye have not² hearkenedºª unto² me, saithºª the LORD;º that² ye might provoke me to angerºª with the worksº of your handsº to your own hurt.º

foretelleth the seventy years' captivity,

8 ¶ Therefore² thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts;º Because²² ye have not² heardºª² my words,º 9 Behold,² I will sendºª and takeºª² all² the familiesº of the north,º saithºª the LORD,º and Nebuchadrezzarº the kingº of Babylon,º my servant,º and will bringºª them against² this² land,º and against² the inhabitantsºª thereof, and against² all² these² nationsº round about,º and will utterly destroyºª them, and makeºª them an astonishment,º and an hissing,º and perpetualº desolations.º 10 Moreover I will takeºª from² them the voiceº of mirth,º and the voiceº of gladness,º the voiceº of the bridegroom,º and the voiceº of the bride,º the soundº of the millstones,º and the lightº of the candle.º 11 And this² whole² landº shall be² a desolation,º [and] an astonishment;º and these² nationsº shall serveºª² the kingº of Babylonº seventyº years.º

and after that, the destruction of Babylon.

12 ¶ And it shall come to pass,² when seventyº yearsº are accomplished,ºª [that] I will punishºª² the kingº of Babylon,º and that² nation,º saithºª the LORD,º for² their iniquity,º and the landº of the Chaldeans,º and will makeºª it perpetualº desolations.º 13 And I will bringºª upon² that² landº² all² my wordsº which² I have pronouncedºª against² it, [even]² all² that is writtenºª in this² book,º which² Jeremiahº hath prophesiedºª against² all² the nations.º 14 For² manyº nationsº and greatº kingsº shall serveºª themselves² of them also:² and I will recompenseºª them according to their deeds,º and according to the worksº of their own hands.º

Under the type of a cup of wine he foresheweth the destruction of all nations.

15 ¶ For² thus² saithºª the LORDº Godº of Israelº unto² me; Takeºª² the wineº cupº of this² furyº at my hand,º² and cause² all² the nations,º to whom²² I² sendºª thee, to drinkºª it. 16 And they shall drink,ºª and be moved,ºª and be mad,ºª becauseº² of the swordº that² I will sendºª among² them. 17 Then tookºª I² the cupº at the LORD'Sº hand,º² and made² all² the nationsº to drink,ºª unto² whom² the LORDº had sentºª me: 18 [To wit],² Jerusalem,º and the citiesº of Judah,º and the kingsº thereof, and² the princesº thereof, to makeºª them a desolation,º an astonishment,º an hissing,º and a curse;º as [it is] this² day;º 19 ² Pharaohº kingº of Egypt,º and his servants,º and his princes,º and all² his people;º 20 And all² the mingled¹ people,² and² all² the kingsº of the landº of Uz,º and all² the kingsº of the landº of the Philistines,º and Ashkelon,º and Azzah,º and Ekron,º and the remnantº of Ashdod,º 21 ² Edom,º and Moab,º and the childrenº of Ammon,º 22 And all² the kingsº of Tyrus,º and all² the kingsº of Zidon,º and the kingsº of the islesº which² [are] beyondº the sea,º 23 Dedan,º and Tema,º and Buz,º and all² [that are] in the utmostºª corners,º 24 And all² the kingsº of Arabia,º and all² the kingsº of the mingled people¹² that dwellºª in the desert,º 25 And all² the kingsº of Zimri,º and all² the kingsº of Elam,º and all² the kingsº of the Medes,º 26 And all² the kingsº of the north,º farº and near,º oneº with² another,º and all² the kingdomsº of the world,º which² [are] upon² the faceº of the earth:º and the kingº of Sheshachº shall drinkºª afterº them. 27 Therefore thou shalt sayºª unto² them, Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Drinkºª ye, and be drunken,ºª and spue,ºª and fall,ºª and riseºª no² more, becauseº² of the swordº which² I² will sendºª among² you. 28 And it shall be,² if² they refuseºª to takeºª the cupº at thine handº² to drink,ºª then shalt thou sayºª unto² them, Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts;º Ye shall certainly¹ª drink.ºª 29 For,² lo,² I² beginºª to bring evilºª on the cityº which² is calledºª by² my name,º and should ye² be utterly¹ª unpunished?ºª Ye shall not² be unpunished:ºª for² I² will call¹ª for² a swordº upon² all² the inhabitantsºª of the earth,º saithºª the LORDº of hosts.º 30 Therefore prophesyºª thou² against² them² all² these² words,º and sayºª unto² them, The LORDº shall roarºª from on high,º² and utterºª his voiceº from his holyº habitation;º² he shall mightily¹ª roarºª upon² his habitation;º he shall giveºª a shout,º as they that treadºª [the grapes], against² all² the inhabitantsºª of the earth.º 31 A noiseº shall comeºª [even] to² the endsº of the earth;º for² the LORDº hath a controversyº with the nations,º he² will pleadºª with all² flesh;º he will giveºª them [that are] wickedº to the sword,º saithºª the LORD.º 32 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º Behold,² evilº shall go forthºª from nationº² to² nation,º and a greatº whirlwindº shall be raised upºª from the coastsº² of the earth.º 33 And the slainº of the LORDº shall be² at that² dayº from [one] endº² of the earthº even unto² the [other] endº of the earth:º they shall not² be lamented,ºª neither² gathered,ºª nor² buried;ºª they shall be² dungº uponº² the ground.º

The howling of the shepherds.

34 ¶ Howl,ºª ye shepherds,ºª and cry;ºª and wallow¹ª yourselves² [in the ashes], ye principalº of the flock:º for² the daysº of your slaughterºª and of your dispersionsº are accomplished;ºª and ye shall fallºª like a pleasantº vessel.º 35 And the shepherdsºª shall have no way¹ to flee,ºª²² nor the principalº² of the flockº to escape.º 36 A voiceº of the cryº of the shepherds,ºª and an howlingº of the principalº of the flock,º [shall be heard]: for² the LORDº hath spoiledºª² their pasture.º 37 And the peaceableº habitationsº are cut downºª becauseº² of the fierceº angerº of the LORD.º 38 He hath forsakenºª his covert,º as the lion:º for² their landº is² desolateº becauseº² of the fiercenessº of the oppressor,ºª and becauseº² of his fierceº anger.º
