Ephraim’s Idolatry

  1 aWhen Ephraim° Ispoke°, [there was] trembling°.
  He bexalted° himself° in Israel°,
  But through cBaal° he IIdid° wrong° and died°.
  2 And now° they sin° more° and more°,
  And make° for themselves amolten° images°,
  Idols° Ibskillfully° made from their silver°,
  All° of them the cwork° of craftsmen°.
  They say° of them, “Let the IImen° who sacrifice° kiss° the dcalves°!”
  3 Therefore° they will be like the amorning° cloud°
  And like dew° which Isoon° disappears°,
  Like bchaff° which is blown° away° from the threshing° floor°
  And like csmoke° from a IIchimney°.

  Since° the land° of Egypt°;

  bIn the land° of drought°.
  6 As [they had] their pasture°, they became° asatisfied°,
  And being° satisfied°, their bheart° became° proud°;
  Therefore°° they cforgot° Me.
  7 So I will be alike° a lion° to them;
  Like a bleopard° I will Ilie° in wait° by the wayside°.
  8 I will encounter° them alike a bear° robbed° of her cubs°,
  And I will tear° open Itheir chests°°;
  There° I will also bdevour° them like a lioness°,
  [As] a wild° beast° would tear° them.

  “Give° me a king° and princes°”?
  11 I agave° you a king° in My anger°
  And btook° him away in My wrath°.

  14 Shall I aransom° them from the Ipower° of Sheol°?
  Shall I redeem° them from death°?
  bO Death°, where° are your thorns°?
  O Sheol°, where° is your sting°?
  cCompassion° will be hidden° from My sight°.

  16 ISamaria° will be held° aguilty°,
  For she has brebelled° against her God°.

Ephraim's glory, by reason of idolatry, vanished.

God's anger for their unkindness.

5 ¶ I² did knowºª thee in the wilderness,º in the landº of great drought.º 6 According to their pasture,º so were they filled;ºª they were filled,ºª and their heartº was exalted;ºª therefore²² have they forgottenºª me. 7 Therefore I will be² unto them as² a lion:º as a leopardº by² the wayº will I observeºª [them]: 8 I will meetºª them as a bearº [that is] bereavedº [of her whelps], and will rendºª the caulº of their heart,º and there² will I devourºª them like a lion:º the wildº beastº shall tearºª them.

A promise of God's mercy.

9 ¶ O Israel,º thou hast destroyedºª thyself; but² in me [is] thine help.º 10 I will¹ be² thy king:º whereº [is any other] that may saveºª thee in all² thy cities?º and thy judgesºª of whom² thou saidst,ºª Giveºª me a kingº and princes?º 11 I gaveºª thee a kingº in mine anger,º and took¹ª [him] away² in my wrath.º 12 The iniquityº of Ephraimº [is] bound up;ºª his sinº [is] hid.ºª 13 The sorrowsº of a travailing womanºª shall comeºª upon him: he² [is] an unwiseº² son;º for² he should not² stayºª longº in [the place of] the breaking forthº of children.º 14 I will ransomºª them from the powerº² of the grave;º I will redeemºª them from death:º² O death,º I will¹ be² thy plagues;º O grave,º I will¹ be² thy destruction:º repentanceº shall be hidºª from mine eyes.º²

15 ¶ Though² he² be fruitfulºª among² [his] brethren,º an east windº shall come,ºª the windº of the LORDº shall come upºª from the wilderness,º² and his springº shall become dry,ºª and his fountainº shall be dried up:ºª he² shall spoilºª the treasureº of all² pleasantº vessels.º 16 Samariaº shall become desolate;ºª for² she hath rebelledºª against her God:º they shall fallºª by the sword:º their infantsº shall be dashed in pieces,ºª and their women with childº shall be ripped up.ºª
