NASB — Proverbs 22 — KJV

On Life and Conduct

  1 A a[good] name° is to be more° desired° than° great° wealth°,
  Favor° is better° than° silver° and gold°.
  2 The rich° and the poor° Ihave° a common° bond°,
  The LORD° is the amaker° of them all°.
  3 The aprudent° sees° the evil° and hides° himself,
  But the Inaive° go° on, and are punished° for it.
  4 The reward° of humility° [and] the Ifear° of the LORD°
  Are riches°, honor° and life°.
  5 aThorns° [and] snares° are in the way° of the perverse°;
  He who guards° himself° will be far° from them.
  6 aTrain° up a child° Iin the way° he should go,
  Even° when° he is old° he will not depart° from it.
  7 The arich° rules° over the poor°,
  And the borrower° [becomes] the lender’s° slave°.
  8 He who asows° iniquity° will reap° vanity°,
  And the brod° of his fury° will perish°.
  9 He who Iis agenerous°° will be blessed°,
  For he bgives° some° of his food° to the poor°.
  10 aDrive° out the scoffer°, and contention° will go° out,
  Even strife° and dishonor° will cease°.
  11 He who loves° apurity° of heart°
  [And] Iwhose speech° is bgracious°, the king° is his friend°.
  12 The eyes° of the LORD° preserve° knowledge°,
  But He overthrows° the words° of the treacherous° man.
  13 The asluggard° says°, “There is a lion° outside°;
  I will be killed° in the streets°!”
  14 The mouth° of Iaan adulteress° is a deep° pit°;
  He who is bcursed° of the LORD° will fall° IIinto it.
  15 Foolishness° is bound° up in the heart° of a child°;
  The arod° of discipline° will remove° it far° from him.
  16 He awho oppresses° the poor° to make° Imore° for himself
  Or who gives° to the rich°, b[will] only° [come to] poverty°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ A [good] nameº [is] rather to be chosenºª than greatº riches,º² [and] lovingº favourº rather than silverº² and gold.º² 2 The richº and poorºª meet together:ºª the LORDº [is] the makerºª of them all.² 3 A prudentº [man] foreseethºª the evil,º and hidethºªªª himself:² but the simpleº pass on,ºª and are punished.ºª 4 Byº humilityº [and] the fearº of the LORDº [are] riches,º and honour,º and life.º 5 Thornsº [and] snaresº [are] in the wayº of the froward:º he that doth keepºª his soulº shall be farºª from² them. 6 Train upºª a childº in² the wayº he should go:º and² when² he is old,ºª he will not² departºª from² it. 7 The richº rulethºª over the poor,ºª and the borrowerºª [is] servantº to the lender.ººª 8 He that sowethºª iniquityº shall reapºª vanity:º and the rodº of his angerº shall fail.ºª 9 He² that hath a bountifulº eyeº shall be blessed;ºª for² he givethºª of his breadº² to the poor.º 10 Cast outºª the scorner,ºª and contentionº shall go out;ºª yea, strifeº and reproachº shall cease.ºª 11 He that lovethºª purenessºª¹ of heart,º [for] the graceº of his lipsº the kingº [shall be] his friend.º 12 The eyesº of the LORDº preserveºª knowledge,º and he overthrowethºª the wordsº of the transgressor.ºª 13 The slothfulº [man] saith,ºª [There is] a lionº without,º I shall be slainºª inº the streets.º 14 The mouthº of strange womenºª [is] a deepº pit:º he that is abhorredºª of the LORDº shall fallºª therein.² 15 Foolishnessº [is] boundºª in the heartº of a child;º [but] the rodº of correctionº shall drive it farºª from² him. 16 He that oppressethºª the poorº to increaseºª his [riches, and] he that givethºª to the rich,º [shall] surely² [come] to want.º 17 Bow downºª thine ear,º and hearºª the wordsº of the wise,º and applyºª thine heartº unto my knowledge.º 18 For² [it is] a pleasant² thing¹ if² thou keepºª them withinº thee; they shall withalº be fittedºª in² thy lips.º 19 That thy trustº may be² in the LORD,º I have made knownºª to thee this day,º even² to thee.² 20 Have not² I writtenºª to thee¹ excellent thingsº in counselsº and knowledge,º 21 That I might make thee knowºª the certaintyº of the wordsº of truth;º that thou mightest answerºª the wordsº of truthº to them that sendºª unto thee? 22 Robºª not² the poor,º because² he² [is] poor:º neither² oppressºª the afflictedº in the gate:º 23 For² the LORDº will pleadºª their cause,º and spoilºª the soulº of² those that spoiledºª them. 24 Make no² friendshipºª with² an angryº man;º and with² a furiousº manº thou shalt not² go:ºª 25 Lest² thou learnºª his ways,º and getºª a snareº to thy soul.º 26 Be² not² thou [one] of them that strikeºª hands,º [or] of them that are suretiesºª for debts.º 27 If² thou hast nothing² to pay,ºª why² should he take awayºª thy bedº from under²² thee? 28 Removeºª not² the ancientº landmark,º which² thy fathersº have set.ºª 29 Seestºª thou a manº diligentº in his business?º he shall standºª beforeº kings;º he shall not² standºª beforeº meanº [men].
