Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem.

1 ¶ Now afterº these² things,º in the reignº of Artaxerxesº kingº of Persia,º Ezraº the sonº of Seraiah,º the sonº of Azariah,º the sonº of Hilkiah,º 2 The sonº of Shallum,º the sonº of Zadok,º the sonº of Ahitub,º 3 The sonº of Amariah,º the sonº of Azariah,º the sonº of Meraioth,º 4 The sonº of Zerahiah,º the sonº of Uzzi,º the sonº of Bukki,º 5 The sonº of Abishua,º the sonº of Phinehas,º the sonº of Eleazar,º the sonº of Aaronº the chiefº priest:º 6 This² Ezraº went upºª from Babylon;º² and he² [was] a readyº scribeºª in the lawº of Moses,º which² the LORDº Godº of Israelº had given:ºª and the kingº grantedºª him all² his request,º according to the handº of the LORDº his Godº upon² him. 7 And there went upºª [some] of the childrenº² of Israel,º and of² the priests,º and the Levites,º and the singers,ºª and the porters,º and the Nethinims,º unto² Jerusalem,º in the seventhº yearº of Artaxerxesº the king.º 8 And he cameºª to Jerusalemº in the fifthº month,º which² [was] in the seventhº yearº of the king.º 9 For² upon the firstº [day] of the firstº monthº beganº he² to go upº from Babylon,º² and on the firstº [day] of the fifthº monthº cameºª he to² Jerusalem,º according to the goodº handº of his Godº upon² him. 10 For² Ezraº had preparedºª his heartº to seekºª² the lawº of the LORD,º and to doºª [it], and to teachºª in Israelº statutesº and judgments.º

The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra.

11 ¶ Now this² [is] the copyº of the letterº that² the kingº Artaxerxesº gaveºª unto Ezraº the priest,º the scribe,ºª [even] a scribeºª of the wordsº of the commandmentsº of the LORD,º and of his statutesº to² Israel.º 12 Artaxerxes,º kingº of kings,º unto Ezraº the priest,º a scribeº of the lawº of² the Godº of heaven,º perfectºª [peace], and at such a time.º 13 I¹ makeºª a decree,º that² allº they ofº the peopleº of Israel,º and [of] his priestsº and Levites,º in my realm,º which are minded of their own freewillºª to go upºª to Jerusalem,º goºª with² thee.¹ 14 Forasmuchºº² as¹ thou art sentºª ofºº the king,º and of his sevenº counsellors,ºª to enquireºª concerningº Judahº and Jerusalem,º according to the lawº of thy Godº which² [is] in thine hand;º 15 And to carryºª the silverº and gold,º which² the kingº and his counsellorsºª have freely offeredºª unto the Godº of Israel,º whoseº habitationº [is] in Jerusalem,º 16 And allº the silverº and goldº that² thou canst findºª in allº the provinceº of Babylon,º withº the freewill offeringºª of the people,¹² and of the priests,º offering willinglyºª for the houseº of their Godº which² [is] in Jerusalem:º 17 Thatºº² thou mayest buyºª speedilyº with thisº moneyº bullocks,º rams,º lambs,º with their meat offeringsº and their drink offerings,º and offerºª themº uponº the altarº of² the houseº of your Godº which² [is] in Jerusalem.º 18 And whatsoeverºº shall seem goodºª to² thee, and toº thy brethren,º to doºª with the restº of the silverº and the gold,º that doºª after the willº of your God.º 19 The vesselsº also that² are givenºª thee for the serviceº of the houseº of thy God,º [those] deliverºª thou beforeº the Godº of Jerusalem.º 20 And whatsoever moreº shall be needfulº for the houseº of thy God,º which² thou shalt have occasionºª to bestow,ºª bestowºª [it] out ofº the king'sº treasureº house.º 21 And I,¹ [even] Iº Artaxerxesº the king,º do makeºª a decreeº to allº the treasurersº which² [are] beyondº the river,º that² whatsoever²² Ezraº the priest,º the scribeº of the lawº of² the Godº of heaven,º shall requireºª of you, it be doneºª speedily,º 22 Untoº an hundredº talentsº of silver,º and to² an hundredº measuresº of wheat,º and to² an hundredº bathsº of wine,º and to² an hundredº bathsº of oil,º and saltº withoutº² prescribingº [how much]. 23 Whatsoeverº² is commanded² byº¹ the Godº of heaven,º let it be diligentlyº doneºª for the houseº of the Godº of heaven:º forº whyº should there beºª wrathº againstº the realmº of the kingº and his sons?º 24 Also we certifyºª you, that² touching anyº of the priestsº and Levites,º singers,º porters,º Nethinims,º or ministersºª of thisº houseº of God,º it shall notº be lawfulº to imposeºª toll,º tribute,º or custom,º uponº them. 25 And thou,º Ezra,º after the wisdomº of thy God,º that² [is] in thine hand,º setºª magistratesºª and judges,º which² may² judge¹ª¹ª² allº the peopleº that² [are] beyondº the river,º allº such as knowºª the lawsº of thy God;º and teachºª ye them that² knowºª [them] not.º 26 And whosoeverº² will² notº doº¹ªª the lawº of² thy God,º and the lawº of² the king,º let² judgmentº be¹ª executedºª speedilyº upon² him,¹ whetherº [it be] unto death,º orº to banishment,º orº to confiscationº of goods,º or to imprisonment.º

Ezra blesseth God for his favour.

27 ¶ Blessedºª [be] the LORDº Godº of our fathers,º which² hath putºª [such a thing] as this² in the king'sº heart,º to beautifyºª² the houseº of the LORDº which² [is] in Jerusalem:º 28 And hath extendedºª mercyº unto² me beforeº the king,º and his counsellors,ºª and before all² the king'sº mightyº princes.º And I² was strengthenedºª as the handº of the LORDº my Godº [was] upon² me, and I gathered togetherºª out of Israelº² chief menº to go upºª with² me.
