Rehoboam, forsaking the LORD, is punished by Shishak.

1 ¶ And it came to pass,² when Rehoboamº had establishedºª the kingdom,º and had strengthened¹² himself, he forsookºª² the lawº of the LORD,º and all² Israelº with² him. 2 And it came to pass,² [that] in the fifthº yearº of kingº Rehoboamº Shishakº kingº of Egyptº came upºª against² Jerusalem,º because² they had transgressedºª against the LORD,º 3 With twelve hundredºº chariots,º and threescoreº thousandº horsemen:º and the peopleº [were] without² numberº that² cameºª with² him out of Egypt;º² the Lubims,º the Sukkiims,º and the Ethiopians.º 4 And he tookºª² the fencedº citiesº which² [pertained] to Judah,º and cameºª to² Jerusalem.º

He and the princes, repenting at the preaching of Shemaiah, are delivered from destruction, but not from spoil.

5 ¶ Then cameºª Shemaiahº the prophetº to² Rehoboam,º and [to] the princesº of Judah,º that² were gathered togetherºª to² Jerusalemº because¹ of²² Shishak,º and saidºª unto them, Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Ye² have forsakenºª me, and therefore have I² alsoº leftºª you in the handº of Shishak.º 6 Whereupon the princesº of Israelº and the kingº humbled¹ª themselves;² and they said,ºª The LORDº [is] righteous.º 7 And when the LORDº sawºª that² they humbled¹ª themselves,² the wordº of the LORDº came² to² Shemaiah,º saying,ºª They have humbled¹ª themselves;² [therefore] I will not² destroyºª them, but I will grantºª them someº deliverance;º and my wrathº shall not² be poured outºª upon Jerusalemº by the handº of Shishak.º 8 Nevertheless² they shall be² his servants;º that they may knowºª my service,º and the serviceº of the kingdomsº of the countries.º 9 So Shishakº kingº of Egyptº came upºª against² Jerusalem,º and took awayºª² the treasuresº of the houseº of the LORD,º and the treasuresº of the king'sº house;º he tookºª² all:² he carried awayºª² also the shieldsº of goldº which² Solomonº had made.ºª 10 Instead of² which kingº Rehoboamº madeºª shieldsº of brass,º and committedºª [them] to² the handsº of the chiefº of the guard,ºª that keptºª the entranceº of the king'sº house.º 11 And whenº² the kingº entered¹ª into²² the houseº of the LORD,º the guardºª cameºª and fetchedºª them, and brought them againºª into² the guardºª chamber.º 12 And when he humbled¹ª himself,² the wrathº of the LORDº turnedºª from² him, that he would not² destroyºª [him] altogether:º and also² in Judahº thingsº went² well.º

The reign and death of Rehoboam.

13 ¶ So kingº Rehoboamº strengthened¹ª himself² in Jerusalem,º and reigned:ºª for² Rehoboamº [was] oneº and fortyº yearsº oldº when he began to reign,ºª and he reignedºª seventeenºº yearsº in Jerusalem,º the cityº which² the LORDº had chosenºª out of all²² the tribesº of Israel,º to putºª² his nameº there.² And his mother'sº nameº [was] Naamahº an Ammonitess.¹² 14 And he didºª evil,º because² he preparedºª not² his heartº to seekºª² the LORD.º 15 Now the actsº of Rehoboam,º firstº and last,º [are] they² not² writtenºª in the bookº of Shemaiahº the prophet,º and of Iddoº the seerº concerning genealogies?ºª And [there were] warsº between Rehoboamº and Jeroboamº continually.º² 16 And Rehoboamº sleptºª with² his fathers,º and was buriedºª in the cityº of David:º and Abijahº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.²
