Rehoboam Reigns over Judah and Builds Cities

1 aNow when Rehoboam° had come° to Jerusalem°, he assembled° the house° of Judah° and Benjamin°, 180,000°°° chosen° men who were warriors°, to fight° against° Israel° to restore° the kingdom° to Rehoboam°. 2 But the word° of the LORD° came° to aShemaiah° the man° of God°, saying°, 3 “Speak° to Rehoboam° the son° of Solomon°, king° of Judah°, and to all° Israel° in Judah° and Benjamin°, saying°, 4 ‘Thus° says° the LORD°, “You shall not go° up or fight° against° ayour Irelatives°; return° every° man° to his house°, bfor this° thing° is from Me.”’” So they listened° to the words° of the LORD° and returned° from going° against° Jeroboam°.

5 ¶ Rehoboam° lived° in Jerusalem° and abuilt° cities° for defense° in Judah°. 6 Thus he built° Bethlehem°, Etam°, Tekoa°, 7 Beth-zur°, Soco°, Adullam°, 8 Gath°, Mareshah°, Ziph°, 9 Adoraim°, Lachish°, Azekah°, 10 Zorah°, Aijalon° and Hebron°, which° are fortified° cities° in Judah° and in Benjamin°. 11 He also strengthened° the fortresses° and put° officers° in them and stores° of food°, oil° and wine°. 12 [He put] shields° and spears° in every° city° and strengthened° them greatly°°. So he held° Judah° and Benjamin°.

13 ¶ Moreover, the priests° and the Levites° who° were in all° Israel° stood° with him from all° their districts°.

Jeroboam Appoints False Priests

14 For athe Levites° left° their pasture° lands° and their property° and came° to Judah° and Jerusalem°, for bJeroboam° and his sons° had excluded° them from serving° as priests° to the LORD°. 15 aHe set° up priests° of his own for the high° places°, for the satyrs° and for the calves° which° he had made°. 16 aThose from all° the tribes° of Israel° who set° their hearts° on seeking° the LORD° God° of Israel° Ifollowed° them to Jerusalem°, to sacrifice° to the LORD° God° of their fathers°. 17 aThey strengthened° the kingdom° of Judah° and supported° Rehoboam° the son° of Solomon° for three° years°, for they walked° in the way° of David° and Solomon° for three° years°.

Rehoboam’s Family

18 ¶ Then Rehoboam° took° as a wife° Mahalath° the daughter° of Jerimoth° the son° of David° [and of] Abihail° the daughter° of aEliab° the son° of Jesse°, 19 and she bore° him sons°: Jeush°, Shemariah° and Zaham°. 20 After° her he took° aMaacah° the daughter° of IAbsalom°, and she bore° him Abijah°, Attai°, Ziza° and Shelomith°. 21 Rehoboam° loved° Maacah° the daughter° of Absalom° more° than° all° his [other] wives° and concubines°. For ahe had taken° eighteen°° wives° and sixty° concubines° and fathered° twenty-eight°° sons° and sixty° daughters°. 22 aRehoboam° appointed° Abijah° the son° of Maacah° as head° and leader° among his brothers°, for he [intended] to make° him king°. 23 He acted° wisely° and distributed° Isome° of his sons° through° all° the territories° of Judah° and Benjamin° to all° the fortified° cities°, and he gave° them food° in abundance°. And he sought° many° wives° [for them].

Rehoboam raising an army to subdue Israel, is forbidden by Shemaiah.

1 ¶ And when Rehoboamº was comeºª to Jerusalem,º he gatheredºª² of the houseº of Judahº and Benjaminº an hundredº and fourscoreº thousandº chosenºª [men], which were warriors,ººª to fightºª against² Israel,º that he might bringºª² the kingdomº again¹ª to Rehoboam.º 2 But the wordº of the LORDº came² to² Shemaiahº the manº of God,º saying,ºª 3 Speakºª unto² Rehoboamº the sonº of Solomon,º kingº of Judah,º and to² all² Israelº in Judahº and Benjamin,º saying,ºª 4 Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Ye shall not² go up,ºª nor² fightºª against² your brethren:º returnºª every manº to his house:º for² this² thingº is doneºª of²² me. He strengtheneth his kingdom with forts and provision.

The priests and Levites, and such as feared God, forsaken by Jeroboam, strengthen the kingdom of Judah.

13 ¶ And the priestsº and the Levitesº that² [were] in all² Israelº resortedºª to² him out of all²² their coasts.º 14 For² the Levitesº leftºª² their suburbsº and their possession,º and came¹ª² to Judahº and Jerusalem:º for² Jeroboamº and his sonsº had cast them offºª from executing the priest's officeºª² unto the LORD:º 15 And he ordainedºª him priestsº for the high places,º and for the devils,º and for the calvesº which² he had made.ºª 16 And afterº them out of all²² the tribesº of Israelº such as setºª² their heartsº to seekºª² the LORDº Godº of Israelº cameºª to Jerusalem,º to sacrificeºª unto the LORDº Godº of their fathers.º 17 So they strengthenedºª² the kingdomº of Judah,º and made² Rehoboamº the sonº of Solomonº strong,ºª threeº years:º for² threeº yearsº they walkedºª in the wayº of Davidº and Solomon.º

18 ¶ And Rehoboamº tookºª him² Mahalathº the daughterºª¹ of Jerimothº the sonº of Davidº to wife,º [and] Abihailº the daughterº of Eliabº the sonº of Jesse;º 19 Which bareºª him children;º² Jeush,º and Shamariah,º and Zaham.º 20 And afterº her he tookºª² Maachahº the daughterº of Absalom;º which bareºª him² Abijah,º and Attai,º and Ziza,º and Shelomith.º 21 And Rehoboamº lovedºª² Maachahº the daughterº of Absalomº above all²² his wivesº and his concubines:º (for² he tookºª eighteenºº wives,º and threescoreº concubines;º and begatºª twentyº and eightº sons,º and threescoreº daughters.)º 22 And Rehoboamº madeºª² Abijahº the sonº of Maachahº the chief,º [to be] rulerº among his brethren:º for² [he thought] to make him king.ºª 23 And he dealt wisely,ºª and dispersedºª of all²² his childrenº throughout all² the countriesº of Judahº and Benjamin,º unto every² fencedº city:º and he gaveºª them victualº in abundance.º And he desiredºª manyº wives.º
