1 aThen Rehoboam° went° to Shechem°, for all° Israel° had come° to Shechem° to make° him king°. 2 When Jeroboam° the son° of Nebat° heard° [of it] (for ahe was in Egypt° where° he had fled° from the presence° of King° Solomon°), Jeroboam° returned° from Egypt°. 3 So they sent° and summoned° him. When Jeroboam° and all° Israel° came°, they spoke° to Rehoboam°, saying°, 4 “Your father° made° our ayoke° hard°; now° therefore lighten° the hard° service° of your father° and his heavy° yoke° which° he put° on us, and we will serve° you.” 5 He said° to them, “Return° to me again° in three° days°.” So the people° departed°.

6 ¶ Then King° Rehoboam° aconsulted° with the elders° who° had° Iserved°° his father° Solomon° while he was still alive°, saying°, “How° do you counsel° [me] to answer°° this° people°?” 7 They spoke° to him, saying°, “If° you will be kind° to this° people° and please° them and aspeak° good° words° to them, then they will be your servants° forever°°.” 8 But he aforsook° the counsel° of the elders° which° they had given° him, and consulted° with the young° men° who° grew° up with him Iand served°° him. 9 So he said° to them, “What° counsel° do you give° that we may answer°° this° people°, who° have spoken° to me, saying°, ‘Lighten° the yoke° which° your father° put° on us’?” 10 The young° men° who° grew° up with him spoke° to him, saying°, “Thus° you shall say° to the people° who° spoke° to you, saying°, ‘Your father° made° our yoke° heavy°, but you make° it lighter° for us.’ Thus° you shall say° to them, ‘My little° finger° is thicker° than° my father’s° loins°! 11 Whereas° my father° loaded° you with a heavy° yoke°, I will add° to your yoke°; my father° disciplined° you with whips°, but I [will discipline you] with scorpions°.’”

12 ¶ So Jeroboam° and all° the people° came° to Rehoboam° on the third° day° as the king° had Idirected°, saying°, “Return° to me on the third° day°.” 13 The king° answered° them harshly°, and King° Rehoboam° forsook° the counsel° of the elders°. 14 He spoke° to them according to the advice° of the young° men°, saying°, “IMy father° made° your yoke° heavy°, but I will add° to it; my father° disciplined° you with whips°, but I [will discipline you] with scorpions°.” 15 So the king° did not listen° to the people°, afor it was a turn° [of events] from God° bthat the LORD° might establish° His word°, which° He spoke° through° Ahijah° the Shilonite° to Jeroboam° the son° of Nebat°.

16 ¶ When all° Israel° [saw] that the king° did not listen° to them the people° answered° the king°, saying°,
  “aWhat° portion° do we have in David°?

bSo all° Israel° departed° to their tents°. 17 But as for the sons° of Israel° who lived° in the cities° of Judah°, Rehoboam° reigned° over° them. 18 Then King° Rehoboam° sent° Hadoram°, who° was aover° the forced° labor°, and the sons° of Israel° stoned° him Ito death°. Rehoboam, refusing the old men's cousel, by the advice of young men answereth them roughly.

6 ¶ And kingº Rehoboamº took counselºª with² the old¹ men² that² had² stoodºª beforeº Solomonº his fatherº while he yet lived,º² saying,ºª Whatº counsel giveºª ye² [me] to returnºª answerº to this² people?º 7 And they spakeºª unto² him, saying,ºª If² thou be² kindº to this² people,º and pleaseºª them, and speakºª goodº wordsº to² them, they will be² thy servantsº for ever.º² 8 But he forsookºª² the counselº which² the old menº gaveºª him, and took counselºª with² the young menº that² were brought upºª with² him, that stoodºª beforeº him. 9 And he saidºª unto² them, What² advice¹ª give² ye² that we may returnºª answerº² to this² people,º which² have spokenºª to² me, saying,ºª Easeºª somewhat² the yokeº that² thy fatherº did putºª upon² us? 10 And the young menº that² were brought upºª with² him spakeºª unto² him, saying,ºª Thus² shalt thou answerºª the peopleº that² spakeºª unto² thee, saying,ºª Thy fatherº made¹ª our yoke¹ heavy,ºª²² but make thou [it] somewhat lighterºª² for²² us; thus² shalt thou sayºª unto² them, My littleº [finger] shall be thickerºª than my father'sº loins.º² 11 For whereasº my fatherº putºª a heavyº yokeº upon² you, I² will put moreºª to² your yoke:º my fatherº chastisedºª you with whips,º but I² [will chastise you] with scorpions.º 12 So Jeroboamº and all² the peopleº cameºª to² Rehoboamº on the thirdº day,º as² the kingº bade,ºª saying,ºª Come againºª to² me on the thirdº day.º 13 And the kingº answeredºª them roughly;º and kingº Rehoboamº forsookºª² the counselº of the old men,º 14 And answeredºª² them after the adviceº of the young men,º saying,ºª My fatherº made your yoke¹ heavy,ºª²² but I² will addºª thereto:² my fatherº chastisedºª you with whips,º but I² [will chastise you] with scorpions.º 15 So the kingº hearkenedºª not² unto² the people:º for² the causeº was² of²² God,º that² the LORDº might performºª² his word,º which² he spakeºª by the handº of Ahijahº the Shiloniteº to² Jeroboamº the sonº of Nebat.º
