1 The aproverbs° of Solomon° bthe son° of David°, king° of Israel°:
  2 To know° awisdom° and instruction°,
  To discern° the sayings° of bunderstanding°,
  3 To areceive° instruction° in wise° behavior°,
  bRighteousness°, justice° and equity°;
  4 To give° aprudence° to the Inaive°,
  To the youth° bknowledge° and discretion°,
  5 A wise° man° will hear° and aincrease° in learning°,
  And a bman of understanding° will acquire° wise° counsel°,
  6 To understand° a proverb° and a figure°,
  The words° of the wise° and their ariddles°.

The Enticement of Sinners

  8aHear°, my son°, your father’s° instruction°
  And bdo not forsake° your mother’s° teaching°;
  9 Indeed°, they are a agraceful° wreath° to your head°
  And Ibornaments° about your neck°.
  10 My son°, if° sinners° aentice° you,
  bDo not consent°.
  11 If° they say°, “Come° with us,
  Let us alie° in wait° for blood°,
  Let us bambush° the innocent° without° cause°;
  12 Let us aswallow° them alive° like Sheol°,
  Even whole°, as those who bgo° down° to the pit°;
  13 We will find° all° [kinds] of precious° wealth°,
  We will fill° our houses° with spoil°;
  14 Throw° in your lot° Iwith us,
  We shall all° have° one° purse°,”
  15 My son°, ado not walk° in the way° with them.
  bKeep° your feet° from their path°,
  16 For atheir feet° run° to evil°
  And they hasten° to shed° blood°.
  17 Indeed°, it is Iuseless° to spread° the [baited] net°
  In the sight° of any° IIbird°°;
  18 But they alie° in wait° for their own blood°;
  They ambush° their own lives°.
  19 So° are the ways° of everyone° who agains° by violence°;
  It takes° away the life° of its possessors°.

Wisdom Warns

  20aWisdom° shouts° in the street°,
  She Ilifts° her voice° in the square°;
  21 At the head° of the noisy° [streets] she cries° out;
  At the entrance° of the gates° in the city° she utters° her sayings°:
  22 “How° long°°, O Ianaive° ones°, will you love° IIbeing simple-minded°?
  And bscoffers° delight° themselves in scoffing°
  And fools° chate° knowledge°?
  23 “Turn° to my reproof°,
  Behold°, I will apour° out my spirit° on you;
  I will make° my words° known° to you.
  24 “Because° aI called° and you brefused°,
  I cstretched° out my hand° and no° one° paid° attention°;
  25 And you aneglected° all° my counsel°
  And did not bwant° my reproof°;
  26 I will also° alaugh° at your bcalamity°;
  I will mock° when your cdread° comes°,
  27 When your dread° comes° like a storm°
  And your calamity° comes° like a awhirlwind°,
  When distress° and anguish° come° upon you.
  28 “Then° they will acall° on me, but I will not answer°;
  They will bseek° me diligently° but they will not find° me,
  29 Because°° they ahated° knowledge°
  And did not choose° the fear° of the LORD°.
  30 “They awould° not accept° my counsel°,
  They spurned° all° my reproof°.
  31 “So they shall aeat° of the fruit° of their own way°
  And be bsatiated° with their own devices°.
  32 “For the awaywardness° of the Inaive° will kill° them,
  And the complacency° of fools° will destroy° them.
  33 “But ahe who listens° to me shall Ilive° securely°
  And will be at ease° from the dread° of evil°.”

1 ¶ The proverbsº of Solomonº the sonº of David,º kingº of Israel;º 2 To knowºª wisdomº and instruction;º to perceiveºª the wordsº of understanding;º 3 To receiveºª the instructionº of wisdom,ºª justice,º and judgment,º and equity;º 4 To giveºª subtiltyº to the simple,º to the young manº knowledgeº and discretion.º 5 A wiseº [man] will hear,ºª and will increaseºª learning;º and a man of understandingºª shall attainºª unto wise counsels:º 6 To understandºª a proverb,º and the interpretation;º the wordsº of the wise,º and their dark sayings.º

An exhortation to fear God, and believe his Word.

7 ¶ The fearº of the LORDº [is] the beginningº of knowledge:º [but] foolsº despiseºª wisdomº and instruction.º 8 My son,º hearºª the instructionº of thy father,º and forsakeºª not² the lawº of thy mother:º 9 For² they² [shall be] an ornamentº of graceº unto thy head,º and chainsº about thy neck.º

To avoid the enticings of sinners.

10 ¶ My son,º if² sinnersº enticeºª thee, consentºª thou not.² 11 If² they say,ºª Come¹ª² with² us, let us lay waitºª for blood,º let us lurk¹ª privily² for the innocentº without cause:º 12 Let us swallow them upºª aliveº as the grave;º and whole,º as those that go downºª into the pit:º 13 We shall findºª all² preciousº substance,º we shall fillºª our housesº with spoil:º 14 Cast¹ª in² thy lotº amongº us; let us all² have² oneº purse:º 15 My son,º walk¹ª² not² thou in the wayº with² them; refrainºª thy footº from their path:º² 16 For² their feetº runºª to evil,º and make hasteºª to shedºª blood.º 17 Surely² in vainº the netº is spreadºª in the sightº of any² bird.ºº 18 And they² lay waitºª for their [own] blood;º they lurk privilyºª for their [own] lives.º 19 So² [are] the waysº of every one² that is greedyºª of gain;º [which] taketh awayºª² the lifeº of the ownersº thereof.

Wisdom complaineth of her contempt.

20 ¶ Wisdomº criethºª without;º she utterethºª her voiceº in the streets:º 21 She criethºª in the chief² place¹ of concourse,ºª in the openingsº of the gates:º in the cityº she utterethºª her words,º [saying], 22 How long,²² ye simple ones,º will ye loveºª simplicity?º and the scornersºª delightºª in their scorning,º and foolsº hateºª knowledge?º 23 Turnºª you at my reproof:º behold,² I will pour outºª my spiritº unto you, I will make knownºª my wordsº unto you.

She threateneth her contemners.

24 ¶ Because² I have called,ºª and ye refused;ºª I have stretched outºª my hand,º and no man² regarded;ºª 25 But ye have set at noughtºª all² my counsel,º and wouldºª none² of my reproof:º 26 I² also² will laughºª at your calamity;º I will mockºª when your fearº cometh;ºª 27 When your fearº comethºª as desolation,ºª¹ and your destructionº comethºª as a whirlwind;º when distressº and anguishº comethºª upon² you. 28 Then² shall they call¹ª upon² me, but I will not² answer;ºª they shall seek me early,ºª but they shall not² findºª me: 29 For that²² they hatedºª knowledge,º and did not² chooseºª the fearº of the LORD:º 30 They wouldºª none² of my counsel:º they despisedºª all² my reproof.º 31 Therefore shall they eatºª of the fruitº² of their own way,º and be filledºª with their own devices.º² 32 For² the turning awayº of the simpleº shall slayºª them, and the prosperityº of foolsº shall destroyºª them. 33 But whoso hearkenethºª unto me shall dwellºª safely,º and shall be quietºª from fearº² of evil.º
