1 ¶ Nowº when Festusº was come¹ª into² the² province,º afterº threeº daysº he ascendedºª fromº Caesareaº toº Jerusalem.º

The Jews accuse Paul before Festus.

2 Thenº the² high priestº andº the² chiefº of the² Jewsº informedºª himº againstº Paul,º andº besoughtºª him,º 3 And desiredºª favourº againstº him,º thatº he would send forºª himº toº Jerusalem,º laying¹ª waitº² inº the² wayº to killºª him.º 4 Butºº Festus¹² answered,ºª that Paulº should be keptºª atº Caesarea,º andº that he himselfº wouldºª departºª¹ shortlyº² [thither]. 5 Let them² therefore,º saidºª he, which amongº youº are able,º go down withºª [me], and accuseºª this¹² man,º if¹ª there be¹ª any²² wickedness¹² inº him.¹² 6 Andº when he had tarriedºª amongº themº moreº thanº tenº days,º he went downºª untoº Caesarea;º and the² next dayº sittingºª onº the² judgment seatº commandedºª Paulº to be brought.ºª 7 Andº when heº was come,ºª the² Jewsº which came downºª fromº Jerusalemº stood round about,ºª and¹ laidºª manyº and² grievousº complaintsº againstº Paul,º whichº they couldºª notº prove.ºª

He answereth for himself,

8 While he² answered¹ª for himself,¹² Neitherº¹ againstº the² lawº of the² Jews,º neitherº againstº the² temple,º nor² yet¹ againstº Caesar,º have I offendedºª any thing² at all.¹ 9 Butº Festus,º willingºª to doºª the² Jewsº a pleasure,º answeredºª Paul,º and said,ºª Wilt² thou¹ª go upºª toº Jerusalem,º and thereº be judgedºª ofº these thingsº beforeº me?º 10 Thenº saidºª Paul,º I standººªª atº Caesar'sº judgment seat,º whereº Iº oughtºª to be judged:ºª to the Jewsº have I done¹ª no¹ wrong,ºª² asºº thouº very well¹² knowest.ºª

and appealeth unto Caesar.

11 Forº if¹¹² I² be an offender,ºª orº have committedºª any thingº worthyº of death,º I refuseºª notº to die:ºª butº ifº there beºª noneº of these things¹ whereof² theseº accuseºª me,º no manº mayºª deliverºª meº unto them.º I appeal² unto¹ª Caesar.º 12 ² Thenº Festus,º when he had conferredºª withº the² council,º answered,ºª Hast thou appealed² unto¹ª Caesar?º untoº Caesarº shalt thou go.ºª 13 Andº afterºª certainº daysº kingº Agrippaº andº Berniceº cameºª untoº Caesareaº to saluteºª Festus.º

Afterwards Festus openeth his matter to King Agrippa,

14 Andº whenº they had beenºª thereº manyº days,º Festusº declaredºª Paul'sº causeº unto the² king,º saying,ºª There isºª a certainº manº left¹ª in bondsº² byº Felix:º 15 Aboutº whom,º when¹ª Iº wasºª atº Jerusalem,º the² chief priestsº andº the² eldersº of the² Jewsº informedºª [me], desiringºª [to have] judgmentº againstº him.º 16 Toº whomº I answered,ºª¹ It² isºª notº the mannerº of the Romansº to deliverºª anyº manº toº die,º beforeº thatº he which is accusedºª haveºª the² accusersº face to face,ºº¹ and² have¹ª licenceº² to answer for himselfº concerningº the² crime laid against him.º 17 Therefore,º when theyº were comeºª hither,º without¹ª anyº delayº on the² morrowº I satºª onº the² judgment seat,º and commandedºª the² manº to be brought forth.ºª 18 Againstº whomº when the² accusersº stood up,ºª they broughtºª noneº accusationº of such things² as¹ Iº supposed:ºª 19 Butº hadºª certainº questionsº againstº himº ofº their ownº superstition,º andº ofº oneº Jesus,º which was dead,ºª whomº Paulº affirmedºª to be alive.ºª 20 Andº because Iº doubtedºª ofº such¹ manner¹ of questions,º²² I askedºª [him] whetherº he wouldºª goºª toº Jerusalem,º and thereº be judgedºª ofº these matters.º 21 Butº when Paulº had appealedºª to be² reservedºª¹ untoº the² hearingº of Augustus,º I commandedºª himº to be keptºª tillº¹ I might² sendºª himº toº Caesar.º 22 Thenº Agrippaº saidºª untoº Festus,º I wouldºª alsoº hearºª the² manº myself.¹²² To morrow,º¹ saidºª he,² thou shalt hearºª him.º

and he is brought forth.

23 And² on the² morrow,º when¹ Agrippaº was come,ºª andº Bernice,º withº greatº pomp,º andº was enteredºª intoº the² place of hearing,º withºº the² chief captains,º andº principalºº menº ofºª the² city,º atº Festus'º commandmentºª Paulº was brought forth.ºª 24 Andº Festusº said,ºª Kingº Agrippa,º andº allº menº which¹ are here presentºª with us,º ye seeºªª this man,º aboutº whomº allº the² multitudeº of the² Jewsº have dealtºª with me,º bothº atº Jerusalem,º andº [also] here,º cryingºª that he² oughtºª notº to liveºª any longer.º

Festus cleareth him to have done nothing worthy of death.

25 Butº when Iº foundºª that heº had committedºª nothingº worthyº of death,º andº¹ that he² himself¹² hath² appealed¹² to¹ª Augustus,º I have determinedºª to sendºª him.º 26 Ofº whomº I haveºª noº certain¹ thingº² to writeºª unto my lord.º Whereforeº I have brought¹ª him¹ forthºª² beforeº you,º andº speciallyº beforeº thee,º O kingº Agrippa,º that,º after examinationº had,ºª I might haveºª somewhatº to write.ºª 27 Forº it seemethºª to meº unreasonableº to sendºª a prisoner,º andº not² withal¹² to signifyºª the² crimesº [laid] againstº him.º
