The two tribes and half with a blessing are sent home.

1 ¶ Then² Joshuaº calledºª the Reubenites,º and the Gadites,º and the halfº tribeº of Manasseh,º 2 And saidºª unto² them, Ye² have keptºª² all² that² Mosesº the servantº of the LORDº commandedºª you, and have obeyedºª my voiceº in all² that² I commandedºª you: 3 Ye have not² leftºª² your brethrenº these² manyº daysº unto² this² day,º but have keptºª² the chargeº of the commandmentº of the LORDº your God.º 4 And now² the LORDº your Godº hath given restºª unto your brethren,º as² he promisedºª them: therefore now² returnºª ye, and get¹ª² you unto your tents,º [and] unto² the landº of your possession,º which² Mosesº the servantº of the LORDº gaveºª you on the other sideº Jordan.º 5 But² take diligentº heedºª to doºª² the commandmentº and the law,º which² Mosesº the servantº of the LORDº chargedºª you, to loveºª² the LORDº your God,º and to walk¹ª² in all² his ways,º and to keepºª his commandments,º and to cleaveºª unto him, and to serveºª him with all² your heartº and with all² your soul.º 6 So Joshuaº blessedºª them, and sent them away:ºª and they went¹ª² unto² their tents.º

7 ¶ Now to the [one] halfº of the tribeº of Manassehº Mosesº had givenºª [possession] in Bashan:º but unto the [other] halfº thereof gaveºª Joshuaº amongº their brethrenº on this sideº Jordanº westward.º And when² Joshuaº sent them awayºª also² unto² their tents,º then he blessedºª them, 8 And he spakeºª unto² them, saying,ºª Returnºª with muchº richesº unto² your tents,º and with veryº muchº cattle,º with silver,º and with gold,º and with brass,º and with iron,º and with veryº muchºª raiment:º divideºª the spoilº of your enemiesºª with² your brethren.º

9 ¶ And the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the halfº tribeº of Manassehº returned,ºª and departed¹ª² from²² the childrenº of Israelº out of Shiloh,º² which² [is] in the landº of Canaan,º to go¹ª² unto² the countryº of Gilead,º to² the landº of their possession,º whereof² they were possessed,ºª according² to the wordº of the LORDº by the handº of Moses.º

They build the altar of testimony in their journey.

10 ¶ And when they cameºª unto² the bordersº of Jordan,º that² [are] in the landº of Canaan,º the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the halfº tribeº of Manassehº builtºª there² an altarº by² Jordan,º a greatº altarº to see² to.¹

The Israelites are offended thereat.

11 ¶ And the childrenº of Israelº heardºª say,ºª Behold,² the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the halfº tribeº of Manassehº have builtºª² an altarº over againstº² the landº of Canaan,º in² the bordersº of Jordan,º at² the passage¹² of the childrenº of Israel.º 12 And when the childrenº of Israelº heardºª [of it], the whole² congregationº of the childrenº of Israelº gathered themselves togetherºª at Shiloh,º to go² up¹ª to warº against² them. 13 And the childrenº of Israelº sentºª unto² the childrenº of Reuben,º and to² the childrenº of Gad,º and to² the halfº tribeº of Manasseh,º into² the landº of Gilead,º² Phinehasº the sonº of Eleazarº the priest,º 14 And with² him tenº princes,º of eachº chiefºº houseº a princeº throughout all² the tribesº of Israel;º and each oneº [was] an headº of the houseº of their fathersº among the thousandsº of Israel.º

15 ¶ And they cameºª unto² the childrenº of Reuben,º and to² the childrenº of Gad,º and to² the halfº tribeº of Manasseh,º unto² the landº of Gilead,º and they spakeºª with² them, saying,ºª 16 Thus² saithºª the whole² congregationº of the LORD,º What² trespassº [is] this² that² ye have committedºª against the Godº of Israel,º to turn awayºª this dayº from followingº² the LORD,º in that ye have buildedºª you an altar,º that ye might rebelºª this dayº against the LORD?º 17 [Is]² the iniquityº of Peorº too littleº for us, from² which² we are not² cleansedºª until² this² day,º although there was² a plagueº in the congregationº of the LORD,º 18 But that ye² must turn awayºª this dayº from followingº² the LORD?º and it will be,² [seeing] ye² rebelºª to dayº against the LORD,º that to morrowº he will be wrothºª with² the whole² congregationº of Israel.º 19 Notwithstanding,º if² the landº of your possessionº [be] unclean,º [then] pass ye overºª unto² the landº of the possessionº of the LORD,º wherein² the LORD'Sº tabernacleº dwelleth,ºª² and take possessionºª amongº us: but rebelºª not² against the LORD,º norº rebelºª against us, in buildingºª you an altarº besideº² the altarº of the LORDº our God.º 20 Did not² Achanº the sonº of Zerahº commitºª a trespassº in the accursed thing,º and wrathº fellºª on² all² the congregationº of Israel?º and that² manº perishedºª not² aloneº in his iniquity.º

They give them good satisfaction.

21 ¶ Then the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the halfº tribeº of Manassehº answered,ºª and saidºª unto² the headsº of the thousandsº of Israel,º 22 The LORDº Godº of gods,º the LORDº Godº of gods,º he² knoweth,ºª and Israelº he² shall know;ºª if² [it be] in rebellion,º or if² in transgressionº against the LORD,º (saveºª us not² this² day,)º 23 That we have builtºª us an altarº to turnºª from followingº² the LORD,º or if² to offerºª thereon² burnt offeringº or meat offering,º or if² to offerºª peaceº offeringsº thereon,² let the LORDº himself² requireºª [it]; 24 And if² we have not² [rather] doneºª² it² for fearº² of [this] thing,º² saying,ºª In time to comeº your childrenº might speakºª unto our children,º saying,ºª What² have ye to do with the LORDº Godº of Israel?º 25 For the LORDº hath madeºª² Jordanº a borderº between² us and you, ye childrenº of Reubenº and childrenº of Gad;º ye have no² partº in the LORD:º so shall your childrenº make¹ª² our childrenº ceaseºª from¹ fearingºª² the LORD.º 26 Therefore we said,ºª Let us now² prepareºª to buildºª us² an altar,º not² for burnt² offering,¹ nor² for sacrifice:º 27 But² [that] it² [may be] a witnessº between² us, and you, and our generationsº afterº us, that we might doºª² the serviceº of the LORDº beforeº him with our burnt offerings,º and with our sacrifices,º and with our peace offerings;º that your childrenº may not² sayºª to our childrenº in time to come,º Ye have no² partº in the LORD.º 28 Therefore saidºª we, that it shall be,² when² they should [so] sayºª to² us or to² our generationsº in time to come,º that we may sayºª [again], Beholdºª² the patternº of the altarº of the LORD,º which² our fathersº made,ºª not² for burnt offerings,º nor² for sacrifices;º but² it² [is] a witnessº between² us and you. 29 God forbidº that we² should rebelºª against the LORD,º and turnºª this dayº from followingº² the LORD,º to buildºª an altarº for burnt offerings,º for meat offerings,º or for sacrifices,º beside²² the altarº of the LORDº our Godº that² [is] beforeº his tabernacle.º

30 ¶ And when Phinehasº the priest,º and the princesº of the congregationº and headsº of the thousandsº of Israelº which² [were] with² him, heardºª² the wordsº that² the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the childrenº of Manassehº spake,ºª it pleasedººª them. 31 And Phinehasº the sonº of Eleazarº the priestº saidºª unto² the childrenº of Reuben,º and to² the childrenº of Gad,º and to² the childrenº of Manasseh,º This dayº we perceiveºª that² the LORDº [is] amongº us, because² ye have not² committedºª this² trespassº against the LORD:º nowº ye have deliveredºª² the childrenº of Israelº out of the handº² of the LORD.º

32 ¶ And Phinehasº the sonº of Eleazarº the priest,º and the princes,º returnedºª from²² the childrenº of Reuben,º and from²² the childrenº of Gad,º out of the landº² of Gilead,º unto² the landº of Canaan,º to² the childrenº of Israel,º and brought¹ª them word¹ again.ºª²² 33 And the thingº pleasedººª the childrenº of Israel;º and the childrenº of Israelº blessedºª God,º and did not² intendºª to go upºª against² them in battle,º to destroyºª² the landº wherein² the childrenº of Reubenº and Gadº dwelt.ºª 34 And the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº calledºª the altarº [Ed]: for² it² [shall be] a witnessº between² us that² the LORDº [is] God.º
