1 aThen° Joshua° summoned° the Reubenites° and the Gadites° and the half-tribe°° of Manasseh°, 2 and said° to them, “You have kept° all° that Moses° the servant° of the LORD° commanded° you, aand have listened° to my voice° in all° that I commanded° you. 3 You have not forsaken° your brothers° these° many° days° to this° day°, but have kept° the charge° of the commandment° of the LORD° your God°. 4 And now° athe LORD° your God° has given° rest° to your brothers°, as He spoke° to them; therefore turn° now° and go° to your tents°, to the land° of your possession°, which° Moses° the servant° of the LORD° gave° you beyond° the Jordan°. 5 Only° be very° careful° to observe° the commandment° and the law° which° Moses° the servant° of the LORD° commanded° you, to alove° the LORD° your God° and walk° in all° His ways° and keep° His commandments° and hold° fast° to Him and serve° Him bwith all° your heart° and with all° your soul°.” 6 So Joshua° ablessed° them and sent° them away°, and they went° to their tents°.

7 ¶ Now ato the one half-tribe°° of Manasseh° Moses° had given° [a possession] in Bashan°, but bto the other half° Joshua° gave° [a possession] among° their brothers° westward° beyond° the Jordan°. So when° Joshua° sent° them away° to their tents°, he blessed° them, 8 and said° to Ithem, “Return° to your tents° with great° riches° and with very° much° livestock°, with silver°, gold°, bronze°, iron°, and with very° many° clothes°; adivide° the spoil° of your enemies° with your brothers°.” 9 The sons° of Reuben° and the sons° of Gad° and the half-tribe°° of Manasseh° returned° [home] and departed° from the sons° of Israel° at Shiloh° which° is in the land° of Canaan°, to go° to the aland° of Gilead°, to the land° of their possession° which° they had possessed°, according° to the Icommand° of the LORD° IIthrough° Moses°.

The Offensive Altar

10 ¶ When they came° to the region° of the Jordan° which° is in the land° of Canaan°, the sons° of Reuben° and the sons° of Gad° and the half-tribe°° of Manasseh° built° an altar° there° by the Jordan°, a large° altar° in appearance°. 11 And the sons° of Israel° heard° [it] Isaid°, “Behold°, the sons° of Reuben° and the sons° of Gad° and the half-tribe°° of Manasseh° have abuilt° an altar° at the IIfrontier° of the land° of Canaan°, in the region° of the Jordan°, on the side° [belonging to] the sons° of Israel°.” 12 When the sons° of Israel° heard° [of it], the whole° congregation° of the sons° of Israel° gathered° themselves at aShiloh° to go° up against° them in war°.

13 ¶ Then the sons° of Israel° sent° to the sons° of Reuben° and to the sons° of Gad° and to the half-tribe°° of Manasseh°, into the land° of Gilead°, aPhinehas° the son° of Eleazar° the priest°, 14 and with him ten° chiefs°, one° chief° for each father’s° household° from each° of the tribes° of Israel°; and aeach° one° of them [was] the head° of his father’s° household° among the Ithousands° of Israel°. 15 They came° to the sons° of Reuben° and to the sons° of Gad° and to the half-tribe°° of Manasseh°, to the land° of Gilead°, and they spoke° with them saying°, 16 “Thus° says° the whole° congregation° of the LORD°, ‘What° is this° unfaithful° act° which° you have committed° against the God° of Israel°, turning° away° from following° the LORD° this day°, by abuilding° yourselves an altar°, to rebel° against the LORD° this day°? 17 Is not athe iniquity° of Peor° Ienough° for us, from which° we have not cleansed° ourselves to this° day°, although a plague° came° on the congregation° of the LORD°, 18 that you must turn° away° this day° from following° the LORD°? If you rebel° against the LORD° today°, aHe will be angry° with the whole° congregation° of Israel° tomorrow°. 19 If°, however°, the land° of your possession° is unclean°, then Icross° into the land° of the possession° of the LORD°, where°° the LORDS° tabernacle° IIstands°, and take° possession° among° us. Only do not rebel° against the LORD°, or rebel° against° us by abuilding° an altar° for yourselves, besides°° the altar° of the LORD° our God°. 20 Did not aAchan° the son° of Zerah° act° unfaithfully° in the things° under° the ban°, and wrath° fall° on all° the congregation° of Israel°? 21 ¶ Then the sons° of Reuben° and the sons° of Gad° and the half-tribe°° of Manasseh° answered° and spoke° to the heads° of the Ifamilies° of Israel°. 22 “The aMighty° One°, God°, the LORD°, the Mighty° One°, God°, the LORD°! bHe knows°, and may Israel° itself° know°. If° [it was] in rebellion°, or if° in an unfaithful° act° against the LORD° do not save° us this° day°! 23 If we have built° us an altar° to turn° away° from following° the LORD°, or if° to aoffer° a burnt° offering° or grain offering° on it, or if° to offer° sacrifices° of peace° offerings° on it, may the LORD° Himself° require° it. 24 But truly°° we have done° this° out of concern°, Ifor a reason°, saying°, ‘In time° to come° your sons° may say° to our IIsons°, “What° have you to do with the LORD°, the God° of Israel°? 25 For the LORD° has made° the Jordan° a border° between° us and you, [you] sons° of Reuben° and sons° of Gad°; you have° no° portion° in the LORD°.” So your sons° may make our sons° stop° fearing° the LORD°.’

30 ¶ So when Phinehas° the priest° and the leaders° of the congregation°, even the heads° of the Ifamilies° of Israel° who° [were] with him, heard° the words° which° the sons° of Reuben° and the sons° of Gad° and the sons° of Manasseh° spoke°, it pleased°° them. 31 And Phinehas° the son° of Eleazar° the priest° said° to the sons° of Reuben° and to the sons° of Gad° and to the sons° of Manasseh°, “Today° we know° that the aLORD° is in our midst°, because° you have not committed° this° unfaithful° act° against the LORD°; now° you have delivered° the sons° of Israel° from the hand° of the LORD°.”

7 ¶ Now to the [one] halfº of the tribeº of Manassehº Mosesº had givenºª [possession] in Bashan:º but unto the [other] halfº thereof gaveºª Joshuaº amongº their brethrenº on this sideº Jordanº westward.º And when² Joshuaº sent them awayºª also² unto² their tents,º then he blessedºª them, 8 And he spakeºª unto² them, saying,ºª Returnºª with muchº richesº unto² your tents,º and with veryº muchº cattle,º with silver,º and with gold,º and with brass,º and with iron,º and with veryº muchºª raiment:º divideºª the spoilº of your enemiesºª with² your brethren.º

The Israelites are offended thereat.

11 ¶ And the childrenº of Israelº heardºª say,ºª Behold,² the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the halfº tribeº of Manassehº have builtºª² an altarº over againstº² the landº of Canaan,º in² the bordersº of Jordan,º at² the passage¹² of the childrenº of Israel.º 12 And when the childrenº of Israelº heardºª [of it], the whole² congregationº of the childrenº of Israelº gathered themselves togetherºª at Shiloh,º to go² up¹ª to warº against² them. 13 And the childrenº of Israelº sentºª unto² the childrenº of Reuben,º and to² the childrenº of Gad,º and to² the halfº tribeº of Manasseh,º into² the landº of Gilead,º² Phinehasº the sonº of Eleazarº the priest,º 14 And with² him tenº princes,º of eachº chiefºº houseº a princeº throughout all² the tribesº of Israel;º and each oneº [was] an headº of the houseº of their fathersº among the thousandsº of Israel.º

21 ¶ Then the childrenº of Reubenº and the childrenº of Gadº and the halfº tribeº of Manassehº answered,ºª and saidºª unto² the headsº of the thousandsº of Israel,º 22 The LORDº Godº of gods,º the LORDº Godº of gods,º he² knoweth,ºª and Israelº he² shall know;ºª if² [it be] in rebellion,º or if² in transgressionº against the LORD,º (saveºª us not² this² day,)º 23 That we have builtºª us an altarº to turnºª from followingº² the LORD,º or if² to offerºª thereon² burnt offeringº or meat offering,º or if² to offerºª peaceº offeringsº thereon,² let the LORDº himself² requireºª [it]; 24 And if² we have not² [rather] doneºª² it² for fearº² of [this] thing,º² saying,ºª In time to comeº your childrenº might speakºª unto our children,º saying,ºª What² have ye to do with the LORDº Godº of Israel?º 25 For the LORDº hath madeºª² Jordanº a borderº between² us and you, ye childrenº of Reubenº and childrenº of Gad;º ye have no² partº in the LORD:º so shall your childrenº make¹ª² our childrenº ceaseºª from¹ fearingºª² the LORD.º 26 Therefore we said,ºª Let us now² prepareºª to buildºª us² an altar,º not² for burnt² offering,¹ nor² for sacrifice:º 27 But² [that] it² [may be] a witnessº between² us, and you, and our generationsº afterº us, that we might doºª² the serviceº of the LORDº beforeº him with our burnt offerings,º and with our sacrifices,º and with our peace offerings;º that your childrenº may not² sayºª to our childrenº in time to come,º Ye have no² partº in the LORD.º 28 Therefore saidºª we, that it shall be,² when² they should [so] sayºª to² us or to² our generationsº in time to come,º that we may sayºª [again], Beholdºª² the patternº of the altarº of the LORD,º which² our fathersº made,ºª not² for burnt offerings,º nor² for sacrifices;º but² it² [is] a witnessº between² us and you. 29 God forbidº that we² should rebelºª against the LORD,º and turnºª this dayº from followingº² the LORD,º to buildºª an altarº for burnt offerings,º for meat offerings,º or for sacrifices,º beside²² the altarº of the LORDº our Godº that² [is] beforeº his tabernacle.º
