Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ Be not² thou enviousºª against evilº men,¹² neither² desireºª to be² with² them. 2 For² their heartº studiethºª destruction,º and their lipsº talkºª of mischief.º 3 Through wisdomº is an houseº builded;ºª and by understandingº it is established:ºª 4 And by knowledgeº shall the chambersº be filledºª with all² preciousº and pleasantº riches.º 5 A wiseº manº [is] strong;º yea, a manº of knowledgeº increasethºª strength.º 6 For² by wise counselº thou shalt makeºª thy war:º and in multitudeº of counsellorsºª [there is] safety.º 7 Wisdomº [is] too highºª for a fool:º he openethºª not² his mouthº in the gate.º 8 He that devisethºª to do evilºª shall be calledºª a mischievousº person.º 9 The thoughtº of foolishnessº [is] sin:º and the scornerºª [is] an abominationº to men.º 10 [If] thou faintºª in the dayº of adversity,º thy strengthº [is] small.º 11 If² thou forbearºª to deliverºª [them that are] drawnºª unto death,º and [those that are] readyºª to be slain;º 12 If² thou sayest,ºª Behold,² we knewºª it² not;² doth not² he that ponderethºª the heart¹² considerºª [it]? and he that keepethºª thy soul,º doth [not] he² knowºª [it]? and shall [not] he renderºª to [every] manº according to his works?º 13 My son,º eatºª thou honey,º because² [it is] good;º and the honeycomb,º [which is] sweetº to² thy taste:º 14 So² [shall] the knowledgeºª of wisdomº [be] unto thy soul:º when² thou hast foundºª [it], then there shall beº a reward,º and thy expectationº shall not² be cut off.ºª 15 Lay not wait,ºª² O wickedº [man], against the dwellingº of the righteous;º spoilºª not² his resting place:º 16 For² a justº [man] fallethºª seven² times,¹ and riseth up again:ºª but the wickedº shall fallºª into mischief.º 17 Rejoiceºª not² when thine enemyºª falleth,ºª and let not² thine heartº be gladºª when he stumbleth:ºª 18 Lest² the LORDº seeºª [it], and it displeaseººª him, and he turn awayºª his wrathº from²² him. 19 Fret¹ª not thyself²² because of evilºª [men], neither² be thou enviousºª at the wicked;º 20 For² there shall be² no² rewardº to the evilº [man]; the candleº of the wickedº shall be put out.ºª 21 My son,º fearºª thou² the LORDº and the king:º [and] meddleºª not² with² them that are given to change:ºª 22 For² their calamityº shall riseºª suddenly;º and who² knowethºª the ruinº of them both?º 23 These² [things] also² [belong] to the wise.º [It is] not² goodº to have respectºª of personsº in judgment.º 24 He that saithºª unto the wicked,º Thou² [art] righteous;º him shall the peopleº curse,ºª nationsº shall abhorºª him: 25 But to them that rebukeºª [him] shall be delight,ºª and a goodº blessingº shall comeºª upon² them. 26 [Every man] shall kissºª [his] lipsº that givethºª a rightº answer.º 27 Prepareºª thy workº without,º and make it fitºª for thyself in the field;º and afterwardsº buildºª thine house.º 28 Be² not² a witnessº against thy neighbourº without cause;º and deceiveºª [not] with thy lips.º 29 Sayºª not,² I will doºª so² to him as² he hath doneºª to me: I will renderºª to the manº according to his work.º 30 I wentºª by² the fieldº of the slothful,ºº and by² the vineyardº of the manº voidº of understanding;º 31 And, lo,² it was all² grown overºª with thorns,º [and] nettlesº had coveredºª the faceº thereof, and the stoneº wallº thereof was broken down.ºª 32 Then I² saw,ºª [and] considered [it] well:ººª I lookedºª upon [it, and] receivedºª instruction.º 33 [Yet] a littleº sleep,º a littleº slumber,º a littleº foldingº of the handsº to sleep:ºª 34 So shall thy povertyº comeºª [as] one that travelleth;ºª and thy wantº as an armedº man.º
